REATIVESTUDIO KITSCFaber-Castell introduces two new Creative Studio kit for students, crafters, and aspiring artists who want to learn the basics of drawing with color pencils and working with soft pastels. Each kit is to teach basic techniques using fully illustrated instruction cards as a guide.

Getting Started Soft Pastels in-cludes 12 pastel sticks along with foam blenders, extra fine sand paper sheets, pastel paper and an eraser. The instruction cards cover coloring and blending techniques to create a variety of pastel effects. The pastels are a great medium to experiment with as the rich colors can also be ap-plied to other mediums than pa-per such as wood and ceramics.

Getting Started Color Pencil contains 5 Art GRIP Color Pen-cils in magenta, red, yellow, blue and brown, a pencil sharpener, a rubbing plate and papers, plus an assortment of papers to draw on – vellum, color paper, and multipurpose paper. The instruction cards cover draw-ing techniques such as tonal layering, imprimatur, and rub-bings. The Art GRIP pencils are wonderful to work with as their intense pigmentation allows for layering and blending creat-ing various shades and hues.

Examples of techniques:

(A) Areas of intense colorHold the pencils almost vertical and press frimly; you will obtain continuous areas of intense color.

(B) ShadingHold the pencil at a very shallow angle with very little pressure. The individual strokes merge to give an area of uniform color, but the texture of the paper shows through.

(C) Light and darkLight colors are translucent, while dark colors have good covering power. Over-lapping layers of different color producs a more lively effect.

(D) Watercolor effectRun over a drawing with a damp paint-brush to achieve the effect of a water-color painting. The more you work over an area, the more the pencil strokes dissolve and merge.

(E) Hatching and cross-hatchingIf you draw a lot of parallel lines you quickly get an impression of color, this becomes denser if you add more lines at a different angle.

(F) Use of a spray bottleSpray a drawing with a fine mist of water: the colors intensify and merge to produce some interesting color transitions, de-pending on the texture of the paper.

(G) Coloring on wet paperAlbrecht Durer pencils give a great deal of color when used on damp paper. The point softens and smoothly over the surface.

(H) Glaze effect- Transparent LayeringOnce the paper has dried the color are permanently impregnated in it. A drawing can be completed with dry pencils with-out the colors dissolving.

ALBRECHT DURERARTIST’S WATERCOLOR PENCILS

FixingAlbrecht Durer colors adhere well to paper, so drawings do not need to be fixed.

Examples of techniques:

(A) ‘Shades of Grey’ consists of three warm and tree cool greys.

(B) The ‘ Terra’ set contains the classic earth colors.

(C) The ‘Landscape’ set contains the colors needed for typical nature sences.

(D) The ‘Basic’ set rounds off the range of colors.

(E) The three classic colors black, san-guine, and sepia are available in sets and individually in the following line widths: S = superfine, F = fine, M = medium; also B = brush point.

(F) If you draw with the PITT artist pen on damp paper, the ink spreads; the effect can be enhanced with a paintbrush. However, once the ink has dried it is permanent and no longer dissolves in water.

(G) Since the ink is permanent and water-proof once dry, a drawing can be colored with watercolors. The colored inks retain their billiance and the black its intensitk.

(H) Classic techniques, familiar from felt-tip pens, can also be achieved with PITT artist pens. These have the advantage that the ink fades much less on exposure to light. Our example shows how an area can be made increasingly concentrated by adding progressively darker colors.

PITT ARTIST PEN

PITT artist pens with a brush point are available in sets of different colors, carefully chosen for particular applications.

Examples of techniques:

(A) Different intensitiesYou can control the amount of color by varying the pressure. That gives a wide range of nuances from delicate fine lines to intense color.

(B) Merging colorsHere you work the lighter color into a darker one, to give an intermediate hue,The lines blend into a diffuse pat-tern and can be made to disappear if you work over them several times.

(C) WipingAdjacent areas of color can be rubbed with a finger or tortillon to produce ex-pressive mixtures of color. In this case the lines remain visible.

(D) Filling inWhole areas of color can be created with individual spots, that you can rub gently with the ball of the hand so that they merge gently. That allows you to produce various nuances of expression, from pointillism and impressionism to soft harmonies of color.

(E) Transitions Adjacent lines or areas can be gen-tly rubbed with the finger to create an intermediate color or a smoth transition. If you shade and rub again, the color becomes more intense.

(F) ‘Painting’A brush dipped in liquid paraffin ( or skin oil even salad oil) can be used to trans-form a pastel drawing into a painting.

(G) CorrectionsOn firm smooth paper the marks left by pastel pencils can be removed copletely with a dust free vinyl eraser. We recom-mend Faber-Castell Eraser No.187120. Dabbing with an art eraser lighting the colors.

PITT PASTEL PENCILS

FixingFixing inevitably alters the ap-pearance of a pastel drawing. PITT pastels adhere well to the texture of the paper, so thet the use of a fixative spray can be reduced to a minimum.

(D) Light and darkLight colors are translucent, while dark colors have good covering power. Overlap-ping layers of different color produces a more lively effects.

(E) Colored backgroundsThe hues very somewhat when applied to colored paper; this can give some attractive effects.

(F) Use of a paintbrushBy using a bristle brush dipped in vegetabe oil or paraffin oil(e.g.salad oil or skin-care oil), you can merge Polychromos colors to give the effect of a painting. They are also soluble in oil paints, so they can be used to sketch out a painting. The lines will dissolve when painted over with oil paints.

(G) Coloring various surfacesPolychromos color pencils can be used on many rough surfaces such as cardboard, wood, stone, leather, or metal.

FixingPolychromos colors adhere well and change very little with exposure to air and light, caution: drawing should not be fixed, since this could cause the lower layers of color to ‘bleed’ through.

Examples of uses:

(A+B) Basic techniquesWe recommend drawing with the edge of the crayon. Then you get lines of defined and more even width, and the color also adheres better to the surface.

(C) Different intensitiesYou can control the amount of color by adjusting the pressure. That gives a wide range of artistic expression from delicate lines to impulsive strokes.

(D) Mixing colorsYou can obtain intermediate tones by ap-plying one color on top of another. The individual strokes merge slightly.

(E) SandpaperUse the sandpaper to grate particles onto the paper. If you spray the surface with fix-ative immediately beforehand, the pigment adheres to it. A variation of this technique is to work the particles into still-wet acrylic paint, as shown here.

(F) Color transitionsNeighbouring areas can be wiped with a finger so that they merge into a delicate transition of color.

(G) Using a paintbrushBy means of a bristle brush dipped in veg-etable or mineral oil, you can dissolve and merge Polychromos pastels to give the ef-fect of a painting. This is an excellent way to create colored paler or a background for a drawing.

(H) CorrectionsOn smooth firm types of paper the color can be completely removed with a vinyl eraser. You can lighten areas of color by dabbing with a kneaded art eraser. We recommend Faber-Castell No.127020.

POLYCHROMOSARTIST’S PASTEL CRAYONS

FixingThe softer the pastels, the more you need to fix a finished draw-ing to prevent smudging, But thet inevitably affects the brilliance of the colors.

Polychromos pastels are relatively hard and adhere well to the surface of the paper. You can therefore use a minimum of spray to fix them.

Decide what you want to draw. Pick out 4 colors... here we are drawing a bear. We pick a light, me-dium, dark and outline color (the darkest). Af-ter you have sketched in your drawing... use the darkest color to draw the outline of your picture.

This is how I use my pencil when adding color. Laying the pencil down... using the side of the lead. I color in an area... adding more pressure to the pencil in the areas I want to make darker.

Holding the pencil up and down... this way you use the tip of the lead to draw. This is used when outlining the picture... and adding the detail. I also use this when I want something to be very shadowed (very dark!).

With the lightest color... I use the pencil's lead on it's side (shown above) to color in the entire bear. Near the edges and by the bear's muff I begin to add more pressure with the pencil to darken (add shadow). Darken the left side to show that the light is coming stronger on the right side of the bear.

With the medium color... I use the pencil's lead on it's side and begin to add more shadow to the bear.

With the dark color... I use the pencil's lead on it's side and continue to add more shadow to the bear.

With the darkest color... I use the pencil's lead standing up.. using more of the tip of the lead to add the bear's detail.

What is the difference between Faber-Castell Art & Graphic art materials and Faber-Castell Goldfaber Studio art materi-als?Faber-Castell Art & Graphic art materials are premium quality artist materials. Goldfaber/Studio art materials are an excellent value for art students, the hob-by artist and aspiring artists. The products do have different characteristics be-tween the two brands. One example: The Art & Graphic Polychromos Colored Pencils contain thick 3.8mm leads housed in a premium California cedar wood casing. The Creative Studio Art GRIP Colored Pencils contain 3.3mm leads with an ergonomic triangular shaped housing.

What should I look for when choosing paper for my artwork?Low quality paper becomes fragile due to acids reacting to sunlight (paper destroys itself). Artist papers are acid-free and should ideally consist of cotton rags. When buying paper one should pay attention that it is ph-neutral and that it carries the designation, resistant to ageing. "Ordinary paper" is made from cellulose and has a high percentage of wastepaper.

How do I properly conserve my artwork?Artwork should be protected from direct sunlight, dirt, dust, changes in room temperatures and humidity. This can be done by preserving the piece under glass and placed in a dry area where direct sunlight does not come in contact with it.

How many colors are the PITT Pastel Pencils available in?Faber-Castell PITT Pastel Pencils are available in 60 colors.

What are the Polychromos Colored Pencils made of?The Polychromos Colored Pencils are comprised of vegetable oil, wax and high quality pigments with superior light-fastness characteristics and brilliance. What are the PITT Pastel Pencils made of?The PITT Pastel Pencils are comprised of superior pigments of unsurpassed light-fastness and cellulose binders. What are the Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils made of?The Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencils are comprised of high quality pigments with superior light-fastness characteristics and water-soluble binders.

What does Polychromos mean?Polychromos is an Ancient Greek word meaning "many colored". It is a pro-tected trade mark of Faber-Castell. How many pencils come in the Polychromos and Albrecht Durer mahogany-stained wood cases?Faber-Castell offers 100 pencils in the mahogany-stained wood cases.
