Make Time In Bible class on Wednesday night, we looked at Paul’s prayer that he

recorded for the Philippian church. We not only looked at some of the details found

within the prayer, but at Paul’s overall prayer life. The observation that was made

was how remarkably long Paul’s prayer list must have been. How on earth did he

have time to pray for all of these congregations? It is also clear that he did not

generalize, nor did he simply mention the name Philippi in his prayers, but he

petitioned God for specific reasons on their behalf. How was this accomplished in

the busy life of an apostle?

Many of our questions can be answered by looking at the life of Jesus. If

there is anyone who’s time on earth was precious, it was the very little time that

Jesus had. There was so much for Him to accomplish in what we would consider to

be no time at all. Early on in His ministry, people were bringing Him the sick to

be healed; and at one point, the entire city was gathered together to see Jesus (Mark

1:32, 33). Even though His life appeared to be immersed in chaos, He demonstrated

for us something that is extremely important in order to maintain a healthy

spiritual life. The text says, “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still

dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed” (Mark

1:35). There are several observations that can be made from this one verse alone,

but if nothing else, we see that Jesus made time to pray even in the midst of time

demanding circumstances.

To answer our initial question concerning the apostle Paul, it appears that

he followed in the footsteps of Jesus, and he made time. Everyone makes time for

something; however, what a person choses to make time for is a clear demonstration

of where his or her priorities lie. Both Jesus and His servant Paul made time to

pray about their work. Their communication with God fell short to no other aspect

of their lives. In 2017, if we as the Lord’s church make prayer a priority, there is

no telling how long our list can be. Not just a list of names of people or places to

briefly mention, but a list of reasons to be thankful, along with petitions, requests,

worries, or anything else that can be accomplished through the power of prayer.

There is much to pray for with little time to accomplish it, so let us not waste any

more time.

David Kirschner as he tries to help his sister Linda to transition to a new place to live Amanda Campbell (friend of Sage & Alexis) seizures, pray that doctors will be able to diagnosis her. Arlene Sugarman (friend of Helen Gasdaglis) waiting for results of tests to see if her cancer has return. Susan Bryant had a setback in her treatment; was in ER last Sunday. Got a new direction to proceed in and some medication to help.

There is an expression among those who exercise regularly, “No Pain, No Gain.” The expression basically means that if you are not willing to work hard and suffer a little for your efforts, then you are not going to accomplish very much. In order for one to be productive in business, for example, one must be willing to make sacrifices of time and money; one must make an effort in order to do well. In our personal relationships the more we put into them the better it is going to be. The parent who makes an effort to spend time with his children is going to have a better relationship with his child than the parent that doesn’t. The husband who spends more time with his wife will have a better relationship than one that is always gone. Should it cause us to wonder, when we come to the spiritual world, that if we don’t make an effort at serving the Lord that we’re not going to get anything out of our relationship with God? The same principle is true here as well. “No pain, no gain.”. Our worship and service requires of us some effort, both mentally and physically. The more effort we put into our worship and service, the greater our relationship with God will become. If we don’t attend services or if our attendance is sporadic, then we’re not going to get very much out of it. Attendance to the worship services is where we get our encouragement to continue to live godly lives and be faithful to the Lord (Hebrews 10:25). It is absolutely critical to our relationship with God. We must engage our minds to worship God (John 4:24, Matthew 22:37). ………..continued on opposite page

That means we need to listen attentively to the prayers and the sermon (1 Corinthians 14:15). We need to sing with all of our heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16). We need to give with purpose and thanksgiving in our hearts (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). And we need to remember the death of Jesus as we partake of the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:19). We cheat ourselves out of a relationship with God when we don’t engage our minds in worship. When we leave the church building our efforts must continue. This means doing good to those who are in need (Galatians 6:10); being a good example to our children (Ephesians 6:4); teaching someone about the gospel (Matthew 28:18-20); setting an example of model behavior for our coworkers (Ephesians 6:6). Regardless who we influence, there must be the effort of influence. What will happen if we engage ourselves in the work of God? We will grow as individuals. The church will also grow; others will see the wonderful things working in our lives and they will want to be part of it. “No pain, no gain” means that if we want more out of our relationship with God we need to work harder at it.
