Panda’s Features

• They have: - a large head -small shaped pupils -sensitive nose and ears -strong teeth for chewing bamboo - black and white markings over their thick layer of fur - rounded body and a short tail

Panda’s Habitat

• They are found in China’s high mountains.

• Only about 2000 live in the wild and another 200 live in zoos or sanctuaries.

• The name PANDA comes from the language of Nepal ,a country near China ,which means “Bamboo Eater”

Panda’s Life

• They are mammals, giving birth to live young panda cubs.

• A female panda begins having cubs when she is five or six years old and then she gives birth to only one or two cubs every few years.

• She usually raises only one cub and ignores the other which then dies of neglect

Baby’s Panda

• At birth, new born panda cubs are tiny, blind and completely dependent on their mother’s care

• A baby panda can not walk until he is four month old

Panda’s Life Span

• Pandas can live for about 20 years in the wild and for 30 years in captivity.

• The biggest panda is 1.5 m long and weighs 100kg

Panda’s Diet• Like other bears, pandas can eat meat,

but their diet is mostly vegetarian.• Their favorite meal is bamboo, a woody

plant with thin shoots and green leaves.

• Bamboo is not very nutritious

They should eat for 10 to 16 hrs a day to stay strong and healthy

Why are pandas’ lives in danger ?

• The biggest threat to pandas is the destruction of their forest homes.

• China’s population is growing fast, and bamboo forest are being cleared for wood, farmland and houses.

• They are also in danger from hunters who want to sell their expensive fur.

• They don’t have enough space to find food ,meet a mate and escape from danger.

Hello! I am coming up here today to tell you people that you should change your

ways. We pandas are decreasing in number because we are being hunted for fun ,for

our fur, and because you humans are destroying our habitats to build new

houses and for your industry to flourish .

You should protect and save us as well as all other endangered species because the whole ecosystem will be affected and with

time many species will be extinct.

Some Good News!

• A pretty serious effort to breed giant pandas has been going on for some time in China, the US, Japan, Mexico and Germany.

• Many zoos now have panda breeding programs where scientists are studying how to help pandas survive in the wild.

• Concerned people around the world are working hard to keep giant pandas alive.

• The authorities in China have imposed “death penalty” punishment for any hunter caught in an attempt to kill any panda.
