Chapter 13 Recap

Group Speech/Lecture

In groups of three, you will participate in a mini lecture on one of our weekly topics. Students will sign up for a topic early in the semester. In a brief presentation (15 to 20 minutes) each group will use a visual aid (preferably PowerPoint) in order to highlight key points of the chapter. Groups are required to use examples (e.g. real life scenarios, video clips, class activities, outside research) to help the class grasp key concepts. The presentation should end with a discussion question for the class. The group is required to submit their visual aid at the end of the presentation.

Groups: 7 groups of 3; 1 group of 4

Audiences

Expectations? Depends on speaker and occasion? What do you expect from a professor? Comedian? Expert on

topic?

Speaker’s role -- must consider and adapt to audiences

Audience member’s role – must use critical listening

Topic: Recycling Audiences: high school students, college professors, fire fighters,

restaurant owners, residents of a senior citizen home How would you get their attention? Be specific to the audience What points would you stress, specific to this audience? Try a new topic—selling a new cell phone

Samples

Consider the speaker and occasion: How did they relate to their audience? Were they credible? How do you know? Was their delivery appropriate?
