On the 17th May last, Henry McCaffey, seaman, made a statement on oath before the Eesident Magistrate at Eoebourne, to the effect that on Friday, 12th May last, the boats Speculator and Aurora were trying to beat out from a small island, between Legendre and Digby Islands. There were three men on board the Speculator besides himself, namely,, James McGee, Joseph Eogers, and John Spencer. The tide was too strong to admit their beating, and Spencer proposed to scull the dingy around an adjacent point, to which they consented. The Aurora had rounded the point and the Speculator was endeavoring to follow, when a squall struck her, capsized her, and shifted her ballast, so that it was impossible to right her again. McGee left the wreck to swim ashore, but did not succeed. McCaffey and Eogers took to the water with an oar each to assist them in floating. Eogers, who was unable to swim, lost his oar and was taken back to the wreck. Ultimately McCafi'ey reached the island, crossed it, and found the A.urora ashore on the other side. Several attempts were made to find the Speculator, but were unsuccessful. I t is supposed that Eogers perished, as there was a high sea running at the time.
