Getting Started
Did we know what we were doing? No
Did we know what we wanted? Yes
![Page 4: © PCC Institute, 2015 A Resource of the Palliative Care Communication Institute Translational Research.](https://reader037.fdocuments.in/reader037/viewer/2022102906/56649d145503460f949e9915/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Going Big
• “Going big” meant we had to build a fleshed-out curriculum that would be meaningful to the audience we wanted to reach
• However, we didn’t know:– nuts and bolts of translating scholarship– appropriate delivery modalities for our intended
audience– venues required for dissemination
![Page 5: © PCC Institute, 2015 A Resource of the Palliative Care Communication Institute Translational Research.](https://reader037.fdocuments.in/reader037/viewer/2022102906/56649d145503460f949e9915/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Going Big
• First focus was on evaluation– individual improvement in communication skills as
primary outcome in medical research • Evaluation requires thinking outside of the
“communication research” box to meet standards set in the healthcare context

Moving from Plan “A” to Plan “H”
• Using the thesaurus!– What is another name for…….
• BEFORE: Other symptoms also necessitate strong provider communication skills, as there are no objective data to otherwise allow for measurement.
• AFTER: In the absence of objective data to measure pain, provider communication becomes quintessential in pain assessment and symptom management.
