~ Monda Halpern~ Monda Halpern~ Monda Halpern~ Monda Halpern Bishop Isaac Hellmuth is the undisputed father of Western University, and his devotion to Christianity is celebrated as part of
its rich history. Hellmuth, however, was born a Jew. Anglican and Evangelical sources have treated his Judaism and his 1814
conversion to Christianity in a variety of ways. This presentation will revisit Hellmuth’s conversion and career through a
Jewish lens, profiling a Christian missionary movement in which Hellmuth was active as both a prospective apostate and long-
time emissary. This talk will also argue that Hellmuth’s conversion might have been partly motivated by a desire for position
and wealth, although his status would suffer amidst anti-Semitism in London, Ontario.
Monda Halpern is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Western University. She specializes in nineteenth and
twentieth-century North American women’s history and Jewish history. Monda is the author of And On That Farm He Had a
Wife: Ontario Farm Women and Feminism, 1900-1970 (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2001) and Alice in Shandehland:
Scandal and Scorn in the Edelson/Horwitz Murder Case (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2015), an historical account of a
1931 homicide in the Ottawa Jewish community.
