PUMPKIN IT UPPulkau; 26-28 October www.lower-austria.info Would you believe that the largest pumpkin ever grown weighed 327 kg? This is one of the many things you can learn at the Retz Pumpkin Festival in Pulkau, a town in the Retzer Land, in Lower

Austria. The festival will treat its visitors to lots of fun sur-rounding this clumsy looking fruit, including master classes

in pumpkin carving and a masquerade parade. Plus, it is a great opportunity to get to know local

customs, listen to folk music and try the deli-cious local cuisine. Some of the dishes worth

tasting are creamy soups, hearty stews and sweet desserts, with the signature nutty flavour imparted by pumpkin seeds.

After that, they never stopped! In mid-October, the city hosts one of the countrys biggest and oldest fairground festivals, the Bremen Free Market, which draws more than four million visitors each year. For two weeks, the city becomes a huge outdoor stage, where all are involved in fun and frenzy. The amusement park set up for the occa-sion extends over 100,000 square metres, and features more than 300 attractions. Hundreds of stalls sell all kinds of merchandise, from antiques to food, from crafts to gastronomy. Shopping in the historic centre of the city is a pure delight!

SPICE UP YOUR LIFEEspelette; 27-28 October www.pimentdespelette.comOn the last weekend of October, the picturesque Basque town of Espelette in the Pyrnes-Atlantiques area of south-western France explodes into life during the annual Pepper Festival. The reason for this amazing whirl of activity? The Espelette pepper. It was introduced into the region in 1523 by the towns native son Gonzalo Percaztegi, who accompanied Columbus on his second trip to the Americas. With its delicate, slightly sweet flavour, this variety of chili pepper is now a cornerstone of local cuisine. Highlights of the festival include music, dance, awards ceremonies and, of course, eating and drinking. The star of the event can be purchased as festoons of fresh or dried peppers, as ground pepper, or pickled in jars.

  • VIRTUALLY THE ENTIRE WORLD TOOK THAT MEMORABLE JOURNEY WITH US. THE IMMENSE FEELING OF BEING WATCHED GAVE US THE ADRENALIN TO KEEP FUNCTIONING

    , -12

With James Lowell, commander of Gemini 12

In 1966, on the Gemini 12 orbital mission, Buzz performed the worlds first successful spacewalk. He made three 2-hour trips outside the capsule, proving that a human being can exist in vacuum. Aldrin also pioneered underwater training techniques, as a substitute for zero gravity f lights, to simulate spacewalking. Some time later, Buzz was named lunar module pilot for Apollo 11, the mission that had to fulfill President John F. Kennedys national goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth, by the end of the 1960s.

Magnificent DesolationOn 16 July 1969, the Saturn V space vehicle blasted off from Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, carrying astronauts Neil Arm-strong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. At 20:18 UTC on 20 July 1969, the lunar module successfully landed the humans on the moon, for the first time in history. Six hours later, Arm-strong became the first to step onto the lunar surface. Aldrin himself came down the ladder of the Eagle Lander and set foot on the barren surface of the Sea of Tranquility 19 minutes later. A third member of Apollo 11, Michael Collins, orbited overhead in the command module. As Buzz walked on the desert-like lunar surface, pocked with thousands of craters, he described the view as magnificent desolation to his communicators at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas. They say that Aldrin had originally been proposed as the first to step onto the Moon, but due to the positioning of the astro-nauts inside the landing module, it was easier for Armstrong to be the first to exit. Aldrin has often been asked how it felt to be farther away from Earth than any human had ever been. To this, the astronaut has always replied that he wasnt afraid: True fear is the fear of the unknown, and all our training had been geared towards elimi-nating the unknown as much as possible. For a month before the f light, wed worked 12 hours a day, at times on a simulated lunar surface, with heavy equipment on our backs. As combat pilots and in f light-testing aircraft, we learned to either cope or get out.Actually, they were not alone. At a distance of 380 thousand kilometres from the Earth, an estimated 600 million people were listening on radio or watching this historic moment on TV. Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us. The immense feeling of being watched gave us the

adrenalin to keep functioning. Perhaps the only moment when Buzz felt something akin to fear was when President Richard Nixon spoke to them through a telephone-radio transmission from the White HouseNeil and Buzz had a number of scientific and technical experiments to conduct and very little time to do them, so there wasnt really any time to savour the moment. They grabbed about 22kg of lunar samples, which, on the moon, was actually quite easy to carry. Before returning to their spacecraft, the astronauts left behind a memorial bag con-taining Soviet medals commemorating Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Komarov, as well as a patch honouring the three American astronauts who died while training for the Apollo 1 mission. The bag included a golden olive branch as a sym-bol of peace, and a disc with messages from the leaders of 73 countries around the world. They also left a plaque bearing the famous inscription Here men from the planet earth first set foot upon the moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind. It was Buzz who planted the American f lag on the lunar sur-face. This historic moment would later become the inspira-tion for the MTV Video Music Award Moonman statuette, created in 1988. Incidentally, the f lag was knocked over by exhaust from the ascent modules engine when the astro-nauts left the moon Two hours and 40 minutes later, Neil and Buzz climbed into the lunar module and settled down to sleep. While moving within the cabin, Aldrin accidentally broke the circuit breaker that would fire the main engine for lift off. Fortunately, they managed to activate the switch with a simple felt-tip pen. The crew lifted off and rejoined Michael Collins aboard the command module in lunar orbit, watch-ing the moon as it became smaller and smaller in the distanceOn 24 July 1969, the astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean and were retrieved by divers. Awaiting them were 21 days of quarantine, followed by worldwide fame.

  • From Astronaut to ArgonautUpon returning from the moon, Buzz Aldrin was deco-rated with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest American peacetime award. An international goodwill tour followed, where the astronaut received numerous awards from 23 other countries. Later, the Apollo 11 crew were given four stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, while Aldrin inspired the Disney character Buzz Lightyear, from the 1995 computer animated comedy, Toy Story.Since retiring from NASA, Buzz has been designing reus-able rockets and multi-crew modules for space f light, as well as keeping his love of exploration alive. He did a deep-sea dive in a mini-submarine to the ruins of the Titanic, and took part in an expedition to the North Pole on a nuclear-powered icebreaker. Exploration is wired into our brains. If we can see the horizon, we want to know whats beyond, he once stated. So, what is beyond for Buzz? In a recent interview, he expressed the strong belief that humans will reach Mars in the nearest future. The former astronaut even devised a plan for missions there, the Aldrin Mars Cycler. Buzz enthusiastically regards space tourism as an essential element in the future of explora-tion, and believes that space travel will one day become as common as airline travel is today. Between 12-14 October 2012, Buzz will be signing auto-graphs at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham, UK. This is just one of the things you will find on Aldrins official Twitter profile, twitter.com/therealbuzz. There is still as much life in him as some believe there to be on other planets. And, if Buzz has his way, those other planets themselves will simply be another step for mankind.
