What is Minimalism?

• “Less is More”• Minimalistic works are

uncomplicated and simplistic. • They use only a few elements in

order to depict the essence of an idea or concept.

• Sometimes minimalism is used just to save money.

• Other times it is an artistic choice.

What is the difference in these two book covers?

Which book would you buy, and why?

VS.

Minimalism in Theatre

• In a minimalist play, there is usually a very small cast and few, if any, scenery or props.

• The dialogue and story are very plain and down to earth. They depict every day occurrences as opposed to epic conflicts.

Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot

Thornton Wilder’s Our Town

Haiku

• Haiku is a form of Japanese poem that is held to a very strict, simplistic formula:

• We’re out of skim milk (5 syllables)• Don’t drive too fast to Costco’s (7 syllables)• Get me Diet Coke (5 syllables)

Writing

• Writers often use brevity as a form of discipline to help improve their writing.

• There is a particular emphasis on shorter sentences and the sparse use adjectives and adverbs.

• Ernest Hemingway is probably most notable minimalist writer

• This, and much more, she accepted - for after all living did mean accepting the loss of one joy after another, not even joys in her case – mere possibilities of improvement. She thought of the endless waves of pain that for some reason or other she and her husband had to endure; of the invisible giants hurting her boy in some unimaginable fashion; of the incalculable amount of tenderness contained in the world; of the fate of this tenderness, which is either crushed, or wasted, or transformed into madness; of neglected children humming to themselves in unswept corners; of beautiful weeds that cannot hide from the farmer and helplessly have to watch the shadow of his simian stoop leave mangled flowers in its wake, as the monstrous darkness approaches.

• “And we could have all this,' she said. 'And we could have everything and every day we make it more impossible.'

'What did you say?'

'I said we could have everything.'

'We can have everything.'

'No, we can't.'

'We can have the whole world.'

'No, we can't.'

'We can go everywhere.'

'No, we can't. It isn't ours anymore.'

'It's ours.'

'No, it isn't. And once they take it away, you never get it back.” -Ernest Hemingway
