The Dormition Fast Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We are fast approaching the Feast of the Dormition of The Virgin Mary, which is also the name day of our beloved Church. We need to keep in mind that this is a period of fasting prior to the Great Feast of the Dormition of the Theoto- kos. The fast begins on August 1st and ends on August 15th. The Dormition Fast is short, but it is a stricter than any other fasting peri- ods with the exception of Great Lent. One should fast on all days from the usual non-Lenten foods, such as all animal products (meat, poultry, milk, eggs, etc.) and olive oil and wine. In addition, one also abstains from fish on all days of the fast including weekends, except on the Feast of the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord, which is on August 6th, when fasting can be eased by having fish, olive oil and wine. On the two weekends, which fall during the fast (Saturday and Sunday), that fast is also relaxed a bit by having wine and olive oil but no fish. Why a Dormition Fast you might ask? Every Orthodox Christian generally knows why we should fast for Christmas and the Easter and many follow it but while many know about the Dormition Fast, very few follow it. Why? Because they don’t understand its purpose. Fasting during the Dormition Fast helps us become like the Theotokos, an obedient servant of God, who heard his word and kept it better than anyone else has or could. The Church through its Paraklesis services gives us the opportunity to come to the Theotokos deathbed and eulogize the woman who bore Jesus the vessel of our salvation. Come and pray to the Theotokos with us and with the church, and by her prayers, we may be able to save our souls. Fasting in its full sense accomplishes this. We need to allow less time for leisure and more time for prayer and reflection on her as she gave us Christ and became the first and greatest Christian. Please check our August calendar towards the back of this Koinotis as to when Paraklesis services will take place and let’s all fast and celebrate together this great Feast Day, the “DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY”.

PRESIDENTS REPORT ...

My Dearest Parishioners,

I would like to welcome back Father Konstantino and Presbytera Anna from their two

month sabbatical. It’s nice to have them back. I hope that all of you are enjoying your sum-

mer.

I am pleased to announce that the Parking Lot Lease Amendment with the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) was approved by the General Assembly (GA) on March 22, and it was

signed on May 15, 2018. In June, we received $20,200 which was the retroactive fee from January 1, to June 30, 2018. In July we received the first increased monthly payment of $17,000. The new ten-year contract started on January 1, 2018 and ends on December 31,

2027. The annual increase is 4%. The CHA has a five-year option starting January 1, 2028 and ends December 31, 2032. The parking lot lease fee will start at $304,873 with an annu-

al increase of 5%. I would like to congratulate Richard, Father and every member of the committee for an outstanding outcome and express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to every member of the Parking Lot Committee for their great contributions, hard work and

patience in this long, difficult and sometimes frustrating process. The committee members are chairperson Isidoros Rozakis, Fr. Konstantinos, Kostas Tomadakis, Petros Tsourianis,

Nick Boulas, Paul Loutraris and yours truly.

This is an excellent supplemental source of income for our church but we still need to

continue our efforts to maintain all the other fundraising efforts that we are doing. Our Church buildings and technical infrastructure are very old and they need to be repaired, re-

placed or updated. Every year we spend a lot of money to repair and maintain buildings, systems and equipment. In the last two months alone we have spent the following in repair and maintenance. In plumbing, $1,400 on two occasions to unclog and repair three toilet

sinks because the pipes are old and pieces are falling in. Other toilet sinks have the same problem. We needed to update the outside electrical panel to accommodate our electrical re-

quirements for the festival, loukoumades and others in the tent, at the cost of $3,400. Our ACs in church and upper hall needed maintenance and Freon at the cost of $1,500. One of the church’s AC’s need a new compressor which will cost $4,500. The other one is expected

to fail soon. The upper hall AC is barely working and needs replacement. Our ice machine stopped working and we had to replace it. We bought a #270 ice maker at the cost of

$2,415. One of the boiler machines has stopped working. The electrical control panel broke and needs replacement. It will cost $3,990. It will be fixed before it gets cold. We also need to replace an exchange heating valve which has been leaking at the cost of $3,400. We al-

ready have spent $8,715 and we need another $12,000 in the next two months. These will

use all the extra money that we received from the lease in the first six months.

The Parish Council following the recommendations of the Strategic Planning Commit-tee has created the Real Estate and Development (RED) Ministry to plan the renovation and

development of the buildings and real estate. A Special GA on April 26, 2018 approved the PC and RED recommendations to hire Spencer, Sullivan and Vogt Architectural Preservation

Co. to perform an assessment and recommendation report at a cost of up to $74,000. The company has been hired and the contract has been signed. In four months the Company will present a master plan which will summarize findings and recommendations of the church,

chapel, offices, social hall and landscape. It will also provide cost estimates by phase and priority. The RED team has done a great job and I would like to express my gratitude and

appreciation to Chairperson Andy Galbadis and every member of the team for their hard

work and dedication.

The Centennial Album Editorial Board has completed its work. The Editorial Board has edited, organized and prepared the 100th Anniversary Album for publication. It will be pre-

sented on Sunday August 26, immediately after the Divine Liturgy. I would like to

congratulate editor in chief Anargyro Sparages, Father Konstantino, Diane Karavitis and Bill

Galatis for a milestone achievement. It is a book for all to enjoy for generations to come. It has been a very long, delicate, and challenging task. I would like to express my deep-

est gratitude and wholeheartedly appreciation to every member of the committee for their efforts, patience and commitment. Special thanks to Diane for an outstanding job in all as-

pect of the process. Anargyros Sparages has provided more details on this Koinotis.

Centennial Album Update

We are pleased to advise that the Centennial Album Editorial Board will

host a Reception for the Dormition Centennial Commemorative Album on Sunday, August 26, 2018, immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Those who have purchased or are due an album will be able to receive it at that

time. Albums will also be available for purchase for $50.

We are making every effort to reach out to all who would have interest in attending. Please

pass along the good news to those who might not regularly receive the Koinotis or who may

not be on the church’s various electronic communications.

We originally committed to an April 1 release date. It was not due to lack of effort that we

missed this and subsequent targets. The Editorial Board needed to take the extra time and especially the care necessary to publish this album consistent with the love and dedication

that our parishioners and contributors put into this effort over the past couple of years.

We look forward to celebrating with you our colorful history. Come and join us!

Anargyros Sparages

THE MIRACLES AND WONDERS OF GOD

The Tender-Hearted Icon of Theotokos “Kardiotissa” from Taylor, PA

Dearly beloved parishioners and fellow Christians of Boston,

Many times during our earthly life we are confronted by powerful tribulations that overwhelm us and we end up

losing our faith in God. However, He who came to save the sinners of this world, takes care of us so that we are not self-condemned by our unfaithfulness. Our God is

a God of love, wonders and miracles, who is not bound by the very laws of nature which He Himself has established. Thus, He has made it so that we can see those

miracles, those awe-inspiring things happening beyond the explanation of science and reason. He takes pity of His creation and offers us spiritual food in order to

strengthen us and rebuild our faith in Him. The miracle of the Kardiotissa icon is just one small example of the unfathomable

mysteries of life and of the Creator of Life, God Himself!

I am attaching some stories of the numerous miracles occurring

from the Myrrh-Streaming Icon of the Theotokos which will be visiting our Parish, in Somervlle MA, on August 10th, Friday at 6:00 p.m.

A man had a massive heart attack while in the

church. Two nurses who were present rushed over to him and began to do CPR, while others called 911. As the nurses tried to revive him, he

showed no pulse, stopped breathing and actually died. While waiting the few minutes for the ambulance to arrive, Fr. Mark Leasure, the

priest of St. George Orthodox Church in Taylor, PA took the Kardiotis-

sa, “The Tender Hearted” myrrh-flowing, miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and held it over the man so that the fragrant myrrh would drip

from the icon onto the chest of the man. Immediately, the dead man took a deep breath, opened his eyes, and began singing “Mary, Mother of God Save Me.” By the

time the paramedics arrived, he was sitting up and didn’t think he needed to go to the hospital, even though they insisted that he get checked.

The doctor at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center tells the woman she has Stage

4 cancer, and there is no treatment that will help her condition. They tell her that

they can control her pain, but she has little time to live. With little hope, she leaves the hospital. Yet a friend anoints her with the fragrant myrrh flowing from the Kardi-

otissa icon. She is miraculously healed. The next time she goes to the doctors and gets checked, they are puzzled and amazed that there is no

trace of her cancer.

Over the past three years, these miracles have happened again and again – with people finding healing from prostate

cancer, liver cancer, throat cancer, lung cancer, brain lym-phoma, and almost every other form of cancer.

Page 8 ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΣ

There is even one oncologist who now, along with his

medical treatment, directs his patients to visit the St. George Orthodox Church in Taylor, PA and be anointed by this miracu-

lous myrrh.

One man had a ruptured brain aneurism. While in the hospi-tal’s ICU, he was in a coma with no hope for recovery. The

doctors told the wife and family to say their goodbyes. A friend of the family knew a priest who had seen the Kardiotissa icon and had a cotton swab

with the myrrh. He came and anointed the man, and the man awoke from the coma, healed. The doctors couldn’t explain what happened, and said it was truly a miracle.

A woman couldn’t see through her pregnancies. Four times she became preg-nant, only to have her baby miscarried at a particular point in the pregnancy. There

was a problem where the stem that connected the spinal cord and the brain, and this caused the miscarriage. During her fifth pregnan-

cy, before she went to the doctor for an ultrasound, she was anoint-ed with holy myrrh from the icon. In the ultrasound picture, which

we all saw, there was an obvious light that had connected the brain with the spinal cord. The doctor and nurses said they had never

seen anything like this before. The woman gave birth to a healthy

child.

A young boy is rushed to the hospital with a 105 temperature. There is swelling of the brain and nothing seemed to be working to lower his temperature. His grand-

mother remembered that she had an old cotton swab from the miraculous icon in her purse. When she pulled it out, it was dry. And yet, she took it and tried to anoint her

grandson, asking for the Virgin Mary’s intercession. Shortly thereafter, the boy’s temperature fell and he sat up. The next

day, she took out the cotton swab again, and discovered that it was now soaked with myrrh and had even formed itself into

a heart.

I wholeheartedly invite you to come and listen to many

more true stories of God’s wonders from the lips of the V. Rev. Fr. Mark Leasure. To witness God’s unceasing miracle

that is performed through the icon of His Mother the Theotokos and ever Virgin Mary. To be anointed, so that you can participate in God’s Grace with your senses!

Glory to God for all things!

blessed to have had wonderful teachers, Despina Wilson, Niko Eliadis, Angelina

Perdikaki, Eleni Malliou, Kyria Ourania Kapotas and Irene Petsalis, I thank you all for

a wonderful year. I also want to thank the parents for bringing your children every Sunday so

eager to learn and of course our wonderful students. I hope you all have a safe and fun sum-

mer and I hope to see you all in church during the summer.

Congratulations to our graduate Danielle Dres who will be continuing her studies at

Thank you

Eleni Raschi

Dear Parishioners,

The president and the members of our Philoptohos Board would like to

thank you all for your constant support to our efforts to help our fellow citi-

zens in need. Under the spiritual guidance of our most esteemed Fr. Konstan-

tinos, and our sister Presvytera Anna, we continue our mission in a very suc-

cessful way.

During the Holly Lenten the ladies of our Board prepared the traditional tsourekia, with

great success, and with the restless contribution of our cooks, Stelios Sfikas, and Danny Koura-

falos.

On May 13, we had our annual general assembly, Kokkino Avgo. Immediately after, we

starred the preparation for our Food and Pastries Festival in September.

The Family Table continues to offer hot meals to every citizen, in Somerville, every

other Wednesday of each month, in the lower hall of our church. Please join us to help peo-

ple, and share with us the joy of giving. The board members together with other volunteer

ladies cook, serve and clean with the professional contribution of our cooks, Mr. Kourafalos,

and Sfikas! Our guests are very appreciative and thankful for the delicious and beautifully

served dinners!

Please consider joining our Philoptohos association, and continue to offer us your love

and support. You will be greatly appreciated by all of us, and especially by the numerous un-

known people who need us.

Thank you, for your support, and contribution to the accomplishment of our Philoptohos

goals.

In His service,

Dora Sfikas, and the Board members

Mary Paskos was born in a small village named Zagora in

Pelios, Greece. She was one of three children. In 1960, she mar-

ried Triantafillo Paskos and moved to Somerville MA.

Mary and her husband have proudly raised two children

Dino and Cindy, and five grandchildren.

Since she arrived in Massachusetts, she has been an active

member of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church Church, and

58 years later she remains a dedicated and loving member.

Mary was actively involved in the PTO and one of several

mothers that were the right hand of the church in their younger

days. She volunteers for many Church activities and fundraising

events as she possibly can. She attends church every Sunday

and major feast days. She has participated walking in the Bos-

ton Greek parade and Somerville parade, representing her Church.

Mary is a frequent volunteer at the Dormition Family Table (Soup Kitchen), and

does these acts under the radar. She maintains her lifelong commitment of setting a good

example. She has preserved these values of faith by living a humble life by supporting her

beloved Dormition Church.

If you would like to sponsor a coffee hour after Church, please contact

the Church Office. Coffee hours do not have to be only in memory of

deceased loved ones. Two or more families could also join together

and sponsor a coffee hour.

You might want to consider hosting a coffee hour in honor of a family

member’s birthday, name day, wedding, anniversary, graduation, promotion, retire-

ment, and beginning of fall, end of the winter, an early spring…..or “just because!” If

you want the Parish Council to prepare the coffee hour for you, please contact the

Church office for the different rates that are applicable depending upon what food you

would like served.

IMMIGRANTS

Late last night the boat left with celebrating lights. It left for foreign lands,

peacefully left, slipped out of the harbor like a thief,

carrying hundreds of souls

on the Ulysian ship, to the unknown destiny trip.

They left—but they left behind hearts, souls, and minds.

They left countries, homes, fathers, wives, to build some better, golden lives.

These are the immigrants. Birds from all over the world.

Different in color, in taste, in Lord.

Birds who have left their own nests, to build America, strong and best.
