A Family Perspective, by Bud Ozar: Jesus was worried about his disciples and he turned to prayer. No matter how much time we spent trying to “guard & protect” our children, each day they become less dependent on us and we must let go and let God. Prayer and parenting go together.!
Introduction to the Liturgy of the Day ~ Today we celebrate Mother’s Day, honoring our mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, and all those who have acted as mothers in our lives. Perhaps we can see our mothers in the words of John in the second reading: “If we love one another, God remains in us, and God’s love is brought to perfection in us” (1 John 4:12). For many of us, the love we have received from our mothers and has remained in us is a wonderful model of the love of God for us.

GOSPEL MEDITATION:! This Sunday's Gospel is known as the "priestly prayer" of Jesus. The entire passage is Jesus entrusting us to the Father. "When I was with them I protected them ? I guarded them," Jesus says. He asks his Father, "Keep them in your name." In this prayer of Jesus, we see the paradoxical tension of our life as Christians in the world. He anticipates struggle for the believer. He describes it in strong words, words that could even appear frightening to the believer. "I gave them your word, and the world hated them." Not only that, but with our eyes on eternal life, we "do not belong to the world." And yet in the midst of those realities, Jesus doesn't take us out of the world. On the contrary, "as you sent me into the world, so I
sent them into the world."
Christians live in this tension daily. The call of Jesus often defies nice, neat categories. We uphold justice as virtue yet are invited to love our enemies. We offer gifts and generous hospitality to others while being reminded of the value of temperance. We are called to teach the truth of right and wrong without losing sight of the beam in our own eye. It can be difficult to find the balance in our own lives, and a Church that preaches moral perfection can
easily fall under scrutiny when it falls short.
In the midst of these complications, Jesus offers a message of hope. He is well aware of the contradictions into which he sends us, and his Father will equip us accordingly. "Consecrate them in truth." "Keep them from the evil one." Jesus does
Respect Life: “We can all help encourage our government and other institutions to support life. They must always aid and support mothers and chil-dren, and never offer to pay for the destruction of life as a ‘solution’ to the challenges women face. The call to uphold women’s dignity and well-being,
and that of their unborn children, is one and the same.” USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Poverty and Abortion: A Vicious Cycle,” www.bit.ly/poverty-abortion
Vocation View: The First Reading today tells of the Apostles filling the vacancy made by the absence of Judas. Each generation must find its own suc-cessors to spread the Word of God. To the next generation. Jesus prays: “Father, as you have sent me into the world so I have sent them into the world.” Perhaps it is you who will fill a vacancy.

Bishop Edward B.
Scharfenberger has announced a major event for the Roman Cath-olic Diocese of Albany: the Hearts Aflame Eucharistic Con-gress to be held Saturday, Sep-tember 22, 2018 at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville.
In our Catholic tradition, a “Eucharistic Congress” is a spe-cial gathering led by the bishop focused on our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist. It is a time of joy, fel-lowship, prayer, and unity. This will be a time of spiritual renewal for our whole diocese!
S P R I N G E N R I C H -MENT 2018: Join us on the jour-
ney at Spring Enrich-ment this May Life is an ongoing journey that begins with God
who holds our hand and invites us to hold the hands of our brothers and sisters on every step of the way. We’re companions on this journey. Why not seek the Lord and join fellow companions at this year’s Spring Enrichment. The Albany Diocese’s Spring Enrich-ment will be at the College of St. Rose in Albany, Wednesday, May 16 – Friday, May 18. With over 100 two hour and 25 one hour mini courses to choose from there should be something for just about everyone at this year’s program. For details go to www.rcda.org/springenrichment or call the Catho-lic School Office at 518-453-6602 for information.
We have begun the Annual Summer Festival preparations. We are asking indi-
vidual members and each church organization to make a basket for our basket raffle. The raffle tick-ets will be mailed in the next cou-ple weeks. Very soon we will have the volunteer forms by each door of the church. As you know, the festival is our biggest fund raiser, so lets work together to make this the best yet!
Our next meeting is May 21st @ 6:30 pm, join us.
