Constructed in 1908, the Logan County Courthouse in Paris is one of t h s area" most architecturally significant structures. The two-storey brick building rests akmve a f u l l bas-ent of gray cut-stone. Exceptional features include brick quoins at each corner, classical port icos an tbee elevations and a clock cupola sumounting! the low hisped roof.
The native stone foundation has simple rectangular wineows on each elevation and a cast-stone water table above. The upper stories of both the north and south elevations have three sets of paired windows. Over each pair is a single semi-circular arched head w i t h keystone. All other windads around the building have flat arched heads with al te rna te voussoirs. The entablature of t h e building features a frieze with dentils and a cornice with simple rectangular-block Srackets . The north elevation and south facade are almost identical. Both are seven bays wi8e with the Ohxea center bays pxojecting slightly f r o m the wall surface m d marked w i t h brick quoins- A pediment is set i n t o the parapet above th? north center bay. The sou31 center bay is covzred by a two- storey c::.assical portico supgorted by four round coluxns se t on square bases. Ehe entab la ture of t h i s w5ite portico i s iden3ical to that s-x- rounding the building i t se l f - The same pattern of d e n t i l s an2 simple blozk breckets is repeated in the ppediment.
B t h th= east and w e s t elevations a re five bays wide ar.d feature classical posticcs ieentical to the south portico. The central e n t r y beneath ezch of the three porticos coflsists of double doors beneath a w i d e transan. ( ~ h e s e cless and aluminum doors are new addTtions, c.1950.) Flankin2 t he panel hove each transom are w i d e scroll brackets. Each e n t r y is c a p ~ e d with a ge2imnt which is ident ica l in s t y l e to those on the porticos, . .
Rising a f u l l storey from the center of the roof is an octagonal clock tmrer. Of frmo construct ion, t h i s mall tower has an entaSlature similar to t h a t of the building. The north, south, east and west s ides of the tower have a sound clock face s e t beneath a s m k L boxed-cornice gable. A Eerorative paneled f i n i a l rests atop the clock tower.
Though tho i n t e r i o r of the strucZuxe was r~ncldeled in 1950, th- o r i g l x l f o y e r and central hallway floor was re ta ined . Snall hexagon-shagsd tiles are set in c i rcu la r and star-shapd patterns giving the i n t e r i o r halls a color fu l appearznce.
me courthouse rests on a square in 2he center of t h e s~.%Ll Paris business district. Its s i z e and classical s t y l e conbine to make t h e court-nal:s2 an architeetnral lanEmark i n t h e county.
