Sharing Colma's History - Flowers Grown by the Italians of Colma

by Gus Pedemonte 1985 - continued

The early Italians here were quick to realize what these Colma lands could produce. They soon experimented growing flowers on a small scale along with their vegetables. Theyfound flowers did very well on this land, especially on the slopes of Mt. Olivet. This wasalways known as a frost free area and always produced the first red potatoes (garnets). Just likethe early garnets, they realized that they were able to harvest flowers like stock, marigolds, forget me nots as early as Easter time. Now they realized more profits from flowers thanvegetables, so reduced the vegetables accordingly.

Along with this prosperity came the time when they began to think about getting marriedand raising a family. Being the kind of people they were, they knew only one thing and thatwas to provide food and shelter for their families. You must realize that they were all youngfellows living in bunk houses or shacks where they ate and slept together. They did not ownlands that they were farming. The land belonged to the cemeteries, the Crockers, the SpringValley Water Co. or some other holdings. If they were going to raise a family there was noway of doing this on rented land and they found that the smaller holdings were help by chickenand hog farmers. These were not for sale and were owned by mostly German farmers. Thiscaused the Italians that went into the hog business to go up San Pedro Road, nearer the oceanand Skyline Blvd. This land was less desirable for good farming and for flowers, so it workedout well for the hog farms to settle there. It seems that when the Italians really got into the hogbusiness, whether it was because they had more area or more ability, the Germans subsequentlystarted to feel the effects of it and it became harder for them to survive. They began to sellsome of their land to the Italians who had been working as employees and their dream ofbecoming self-employed and owning land became true.

Pet's Rest History

Founded in 1947 by Earl and Julia Taylor and now owned and operated by Phillip andIrene C'de Baca on about two acres, Pet's Rest serves pet lovers of San Francisco and theBay Area. Pet's Rest is definitely the most unique cemetery in Colma, People from allover the world come to marvel at this monument oflove for animals. We receive visitorsfrom college sponsored tours as well as tour busses and individual visitors. Pet's Restboasts more flowers and visitors attention than the surrounding 17 human cemeteries.

Pet's Rest was started when Earl (then a Cypress Lawn Employee) was concerned bynumerous requests by people to have their pets interred in family lots at Cypress Lawn.Earl, along with Bill Belli, Julia Taylor, and Irene Frahm opened Pet's Rest late in 1946.They landscaped the grounds and built a crematorium on site. The first burial took placein early 1947. They converted a donated bee house from its original purpose into a smallchapel. They went to Hunters Point and salvaged boiler pipe and fittings from old victoryships for use as a sprinkler system. Julia and the kids would make the pickups and Earland Bill would do cremations and burials after their duties at Cypress Lawn.

To date, over 13,000 pet animals have been laid to rest in this peaceful setting of lawn, shrubs and trees. Pets buried here include dogs and cats, monkeys cheetahs, and goldfishto name but a few. Monuments fill the landscape with testaments of devotion. Here, people come to visit and admire the resting places of pets owned by the rich and famousor just the folks next door: Some pets have extensive pedigree, some are mongrels. Allwere loved and are greatly missed.

The landscape and monuments are unique and unusual. People have chosen headstonesthat range from statues of Carrera Marble, granite mausoleums, marble or granite markers,to the home made plaques. A visit to Pet's Rest is always an adventure in wondermentand awe. A most different cemetery and a fitting final tribute to a life time of devotion.

SHARING COLMA'S mSTORY - FLOWERS GROWN BY THE ITALIANS OF COLMA, continued

speech given by Gus Pedemonte 1985

The Italians slowly were able to make the move to purchase property, but it was not easy. They hadarrived in this country with no funds, no parents to help them, no welfare or any help to get credit, althoughA.P. Giannini was making character loans it was no soft touch. Their willingness to work and honesty didmean something as they were able to borrow from a fellow worker or friend and with what they managed tosave were able to buy a small plot, some of these small plots had a small house on them. The young Italiansimmediately proceeded to plow up the land, mainly by hand and plant flowers. Another favorable feature wasthat the Germans who had previously raised livestock on the land had put in wells pumped by windmills whichgave them their water.

Now the young Italians had something to offer, and either had a young lady waiting for him in Italy orhad an acquaintance here who knew of a nice young lady who was desirous of having someone send for her. There was also some native daughters born of Italian ancestry looking for a husband. The Paisano boy couldsee many advantages in marrying a local girl. She could speak English, which helped with the language barrierand there was a possibility of getting help from the in-laws. Even though the girls were born here, they werewell trained and did not have to be reminded that they were supposed to help their husbands in the fields alongwith doing the house work and raising the kids. When the business could be expanded and you hired help, yougave board and room and the wives did their washing too. The bride's work grew and she was the one whowas instrumental in the husband getting his citizenship papers. In most cases they did have a desire to becomeAmerican citizens and where proud that they had become landowners here.

~EPTEMBER 1996 :A MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD MEMBERS

Victorian Days in the Park was again a very successfulevent. We were in History Lane, along with our sister HistoricalAssociations. We passed out literature about Colma and sold anumber of City of Souls books as well as Michael Svanevik's andShirley Burgett's new books, The San Francisco Milepost and thelatest San Mateo Chronicles. Mike and Shirley are kind 'enoughto sell them to us at a discount so that we make $2.00 on everybook we sell. Michael is also sending his students to us to buy thebooks required for his class.

Special thanks to Ralph Putzker for the great display standhe made for us to display our four groups of historic pictures andarticles about Colma. People showed great interest and it was soeasy to put up and take apart. He is working on more displayboards for us to use and we will be able to interchange topics. Heis a wonder.

Do come and hear all about one of our residents (one ofour underground residents) at Woodlawn Cemetery. He is theeccentric, self-proclaimed Emperor of the United States andProtector of Mexico. His story will be told at the DalyCity/Colma meeting on September 18 (see special dates on thispage). Joshua (Emperor) Norton was his name, and his grave sitehas many visitors (if not more) than Wyatt Earp. A fascinatingstory that you would enjoy very much, and the Daly City/ColmaHistory Guild will make you welcome.
