Henry Willis, a graduate student in Clinical Psychology, is a 2018 recipient of a grant from the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Foundation (IOCDF). IOCDF is committed to finding and promoting the most effective treatment methods for OCD and related disorders. To help achieve these goals, IOCDF awards grants to investigators whose research focuses on the nature, causes, and treatment of OCD and related dis-orders. Henry received over $25,000 for his project, “Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in African American Young Adults: The Roles of Racial Discrimination and Racial Identity.” In his research project, Henry will in-vestigate the role of racial discrimination in the intrusive thoughts experience by African Americans with OCD. He will also examine whether African Americans who hold a sense of belonging and commitment to a larger group defined by their race may be less likely to develop certain OCD symptoms. This project will con-tribute to what so far has been a limited body of research and may inform future treatment for this popula-tion of OCD patients.

Catherine Paquette, a graduate student in Clinical Psychology, is the recipient of a 2018-19 UNC Injury Pre-vention Research Center (IPRC) Injury and Violence Prevention (IVP) Fellowship. IPRC is a national leader in recruiting and educating the next generation of IVP researchers and practitioners. The goal of the fellowship is to support masters and doctoral students from diverse academic, professional, and demographic back-grounds and to allow them to gain a variety of mentoring and career development opportunity. IVP Fellows work with IPRC-affiliated faculty mentors to identify opportunities to get experience conducting IVP-related research, programming, or policy. The fellowship will provide $3,000 per year to support travel, conference and meeting attendance, and other professional development or training opportunities. Catherine has been selected as a member of the 1st cohort of IVP fellows—congratulations, Catherine!

Three Psychology and Neuroscience graduate students, Ronald Kim (Behavioral and Integrative Neurosci-ence), Jacqueline Paniccia (Behavioral and Integrative Neuroscience), and Taylor Thomas (Developmental Psychology) are the recipients of the 2018-19 Dashiell Dissertation Start-up Awards. The Dashiell Disserta-tion Start-up Award honors John Frederick Dashiell, founder of the Department of Psychology and Neurosci-ence, and is intended to support scientific work by assisting with research expenses. Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the award!

Dr. Sara Algoe, an Associate Professor of Social Psychology, is the recipient of a 2018 grant by the John Tem-pleton Foundation. The Foundation offers grants in support of research and public engage in major areas, including science and the big questions, character virtue development, individual freedom and free markets, exceptional cognitive talent and genius, genetics, and voluntary family planning. The John Templeton Foun-dation invests in bold ideas from contrarian thinkers—ideas that cross disciplinary boundaries and challenge conventional assumptions with innovative programs that engage the public with these ideas, in an effort to open minds, deepen understanding, and inspire curiosity. Dr. Algoe received a total award of over $1.8 mil-lion over three years for her project, “A Scientific Approach to Living in Love: A Framework for the Future.”
