Dalí & Magritte Two surrealist icons in dialogue

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium dedicate an exceptional exhibition to Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. For the first time ever, the connection and influences between the two greatest icons of the surrealist movement are highlighted.

In the spring of 1929, Salvador Dalí and René Magritte meet in Paris, surrounded by the great names of the artistic avant-garde. In August of the same year, at Dalí’s invitation, Magritte travels to Cadaqués, the Spanish painter’s home base.

This autumn at the Royal Museums

of Fine Arts of Belgium

Page 21: ...museums and private collections from around the world. The Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota, who represented her country at the Venice Biennale in 2015, will exhibit a spectacular

21

This surrealist summer – which also includes visits by Éluard, Miró and Buñuel – will prove decisive.

Dalí and Magritte both aim to challenge reality, question our gaze and shake up our certainties. The Catalan and the Belgian show a fascinating proximity, despite their very different creations and personalities, which would eventually lead them to drift apart. The exhibition reveals the personal, philosophical and aesthetic links between these two iconic artists through more than 80 paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, films and archival objects from 40 international museums and private collections.Exhibition curator: Michel Draguet, Director General of the RMFAB

Continue your surrealist journey and (re)discover the Magritte Museum, which presents a renewed selection from the largest collection of works by René Magritte in the world.

Interactive spaces allow visitors to experiment creatively, playfully and rigorously with the work of René Magritte and Salvador Dalí. Many activities are organized during this prestigious exhibition.

Chiharu Shiota : Me Somewhere Else

Chiharu Shiota’s (Osaka, 1972) spectacular installations transform the spaces in which they unfold, and immerse the visitor in the artist’s universe. They combine textile materials such as wool and cotton with various elements, sculpted shapes or used objects.

The artist combines performance, body art and installation in a process that places the body at its center. Her protean artistic practice explores the notions of temporality, movement, memory and dream; and requires both the mental and physical involvement of the spectator. Chiharu Shiota’s highly acclaimed participation in the Venice Biennale, where she represented Japan in 2015, confirmed the international scope of her work.

Presented in the Bernheim room, Me Somewhere Else (2018), a work of great visual strength, occupies a very special place in the artist’s production. Shiota talks about her fight against her illness, and the certainty that her mind will survive her body. “Before I was diagnosed with cancer I thought that if I die, everything about me is going to die; I am going to die, but now I know only my body dies – not my mind. My mind remains somewhere else.”

FINE ARTS & HUMAN RIGHTS

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (RMFAB) and the Belgian sections of Amnesty International have joined forces to develop a human rights path which threads through the heart of the Museums’ collections.

This visit, which focuses on different human rights, including related to migration, will be presented on 18 December 2019 on the occasion of International Migrants Day. Based on dialogues between experts in the field of art and others in human rights, the trail is presented in the form of a dozen video capsules. Françoise Tulkens, former judge of the European Court of Human Rights, and Anthony Spiegeler, art historian, talk about justice; Anne-Marie Impe, journalist and Jean-Philippe Theyskens, art historian and guide- lecturer, talk about women’s rights; Ellen Desmet, professor of migration law at the University of Ghent, and Isabelle Vermote, art historian, talk about migration, etc.

The course will also be the subject of guided tours for various audiences: school groups, cultural groups, specific audiences... These guided tours will be offered from September 2019 by the Cultural Mediation Department of the RMFAB, which actively contributed to make this unique project happen.

Bruegel

Pieter Bruegel the Elder is one of the most famous painters from the Renaissance period. He died in 1569, around the age of 40. His career was short and today, only about forty paintings from his short career have been preserved. These masterpieces are rare and extremely valuable.

The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium house the second largest ensemble of Bruegel the Elder paintings in the world after the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna.

On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of his death, our Museums will pay tribute to Pieter Bruegel the Elder:

the Bruegel Hall will be renovated and strong emphasis will be placed on the preventive conservation of these priceless works. From now on Bruegel’s paintings will be displayed in an air-conditioned box, climatic conditions will be optimized and new lighting will let you admire these magnificent works more clearly.

The Bruegel Box will be enriched with two new immersive videos focusing on Bruegel’s winter scenes, the paintings of which are in our museums.

A new Old Masters audio guide will become available this autumn.

Visitors will be able to deepen their knowledge of the artist’s work thanks to an audio guide “Bruegel”.

26

In addition to the exhibition “Dalí & Magritte. Two surrealist icons in dialogue”, a festive day will take place on Sunday 24 November to celebrate this anniversary.

Many activities, performances, workshops, lectures and readings will be proposed to visitors from 10:00 to 18:00 on this special Sunday.

And more: An audio guide in Korean will soon be available, adding to the current French, Dutch, German, Spanish and Italian.

The Magritte Museum also offers a range of audio guides for all audiences: in addition to our selection of audio guides in foreign languages, younger visitors can enrich their visit with audio guides for children (FR, NL, ENG, DE, IT) or teenagers (FR, NL, ENG, DE, IT).

Visio guides are also available for hearing-impaired or deaf people (FR, NL, ENG), who can additionally book specific guided tours in sign language.

Starting in November, images of the Magritte Museum will be projected on the Gresham façade (place Royale) every evening for 3 months.

2009-201910 years of success is worth celebrating!

HISTORY OF ART AT THE MUSEUM

Dalí & Magritte. Two surrealist icons in dialogue

Echoing the exhibition and its research, the Tuesday conferences in October, November and December 2019 explore the Surrealist movement that links these two giants of modern art. Close in space and in time, the themes of these sessions promise their share of surprises and (re)discoveries.

Scientists, one curator, guides/speakers and one collector/gallerist share the presentations. Conferences are given in French.
