Notes from Mrs Hulonce…
Portland Bay School Buildings-
The process for removing these facilities has
begun. The cranes have been lots of fun to
watch and have certainly provided amusement
for bystanders. We thank community members
for their patience with the limited parking. The
site will be secured and not accessible for a
while yet, while we wait for the final building to
be removed. Then we will be able to open the
area up and consider what to do with the
space again.
Good 360-
We thank BIGW for their kind donation of books
for our students through the Good360 “Books for
Kids” program. All students should have
brought home two texts in the last week.
Good360 is an Australian Not For Profit that has
matched over 1110 Australian charities, NFPs
and schools with essential brand
new surplus goods to their communities. By
partnering with retailers, wholesalers and
manufacturers Good360 has connected
over RRP$83m in new unsold stock and offered
these goods to members at the cost of Shipping
& Handling (approximately 5-10% of the RRP
price). Charities like The Salvation Army, Red
Cross, Wesley Mission and Uniting to name a few
of our members that are utilising our services
since our inception in March 2015. For more
information on this great initiative see the
website: good360.org.au.
2020 Transition-
Next Monday is our first Foundation 2020
transition session and we are looking forward to
seeing our new students and their families.
Students will come up to school at 2pm and
complete the afternoon in the Foundation
Wonder Room. They will also meet their Grade 6
buddies! Parents are welcome to spend some
time in staffroom with Mrs Hulonce and Miss
Mee so they are not too far away from their
soon to be school children!
Grade 6 Netbooks-
Are to be collected in week 8 of term 4, so we
can prepare them for use in secondary school
in 2020. Now is the time for families to think
about saving data to external storage, such as
flash/ USB drives, as all will be wiped during this
process.
Have fun!
Persistence
1. Slow down
2. Say thank you
3. Smile
4. Take a deep breath
5. Compliment someone
6. Appreciate small things
7. Focus on awesomeness
8. Notice three things you are grateful for
right now – in this moment
Gratitude is a practice which
reminds us to be grateful for all
the things we have in our lives.
It helps us focus on the positive
parts of our lives and can
change our outlook when we
realise how many things we
have to be thankful for. We all
have something to be thankful
for if we look hard enough!
Gratitude is not always
automatic - it takes practice!
But if we show persistence we
can develop an attitude of
gratitude.

ch?v=yA5Qpt1JRE4
Begin a gratitude diary; write 3
things each day you are grateful
for. Over time, increase this to 5, 8
then 10 things each day. This can
be as simple as appreciating the
clothes on your back or for the
sunshine. Notice how you feel
after writing in your diary – do you
feel calm? Content? Happy?

When Things Go Wrong At School
By Michael Grouse
Despite best teaching practice things do go wrong at school. Most kids
experience learning difficulties from time to time. The developmental nature of
childhood means that there will always be some turbulence, particularly around
key transition ages, such as the start of adolescence.
Your approach as a parent when your child has difficulty at school makes huge
difference to their resilience, and their future relationships with teachers and peers.
Here’s a five point checklist to help you stay focused and be effective if your child
experiences difficulty at school.
1. Stay calm and rational Don’t get on the phone straight-away when things go
wrong! It’s natural to protect, or defend your children, particularly when you think
that they’ve come in for some unfair or poor treatment. But acting when you are
full of emotion is inappropriate! Take your time to think through how you might
assist your child. Take a few deep breaths and calm down......
2. Get the all facts Once you’ve calmed down, and then get the facts about the
situation. Kids are faulty observers and often only see one side of a story when
there’s a problem with a teacher or a fellow student. Ask good questions to help
the full story emerge.
3. Go through the right channels Approach the school calmly, going through the
school office, or directly to your child’s teacher if that is the usual protocol. If you
have already established a relationship with the teacher concerned, then it’s
often easier to approach them directly.
4. Look for solutions rather than blame State the problem as you see it and view
your child’s teacher as an ally, not a foe. “I’m really worried about Jeremy. He’s
been acting strangely lately and I need some help” is the type of approach that
will elicit a helpful response. Talk about your concerns and keep the discussion
focused firmly on what’s best for your child. Listen to your teacher’s viewpoint,
valuing a different perspective.
5. Stay in touch Be realistic with your expectations, remembering that some
problems can’t be solved to your satisfaction, nor will they be resolved straight
away. Be prepared to work alongside your child’s teacher over the long-term,
which means you need to keep communicating with each other.
