Daniel 12 and Eternal Life

Prior to Christ, there was uncertainty about life after death; There was even despair.

Solomon– I came to hate life Psalms 39:13– “Remove your gaze from me, before I

go away and am no more!” Ps. 49– All men die like the animals, and are no more! There are only glimpses of something better! Ps 17:15 – I will see your face in righteousness and

awake in your likeness Psalms 73– You will guide me with your counsel and

afterward receive me to glory Ps. 116:15– Precious in the sight of the Lord is the

death of His saints But the questions remained: If a man die, will he live?

Life Under Torah

John 5:24-29, 39f “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation…You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.

The Promise of Eternal Life

Page 4: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

“You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life”

Context is the resurrection of v. 24-29--that patently draws from Daniel!

Jesus clearly stated that the OT contained the promise of everlasting life

Daniel undeniably predicted the resurrection to eternal life, so,

Was Jesus speaking of a different kind of eternal life from that foretold by Daniel

How many kinds of eternal life are there anyway?

Jesus and Daniel

The Resurrection Of Daniel 12 Would Be The Just And Unjust

The Resurrection Of John 5:28-29 Would Be Of The Just And Unjust.

Therefore The Resurrection Of John 5:28-29 Is The Resurrection Of Daniel 12.

But, The Resurrection Of Daniel 12 Would Be Fulfilled “When The Power Of The Holy People Has Been Completely Shattered” (Daniel 12:7– In A.D. 70)!

Therefore, The Resurrection Of John 5:28-29 Would Be In AD 70!

If These Are Different Resurrections, What is The Hermeneutic of Distinction!

DANIEL 12– JOHN 5

They Shall Never Die! John 3:16- "For God so loved the world

that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

John 6:50 "This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.”

John 6:58 "This is the bread which came down from heaven––not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.“

The Promise of Jesus

Page 7: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”

52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?”

54 Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. 55 Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”

John 11:25- “Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

John 11:26- "And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?“

Physical Death is not the End–

Life Given Before Physical Death is Eternal Life!

The Promise of Christ

Page 9: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

Nothing helps us understand the promise of eternal life more than YHVH’s promises to Abraham.

 v. 10f-- ”By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.” (Hebrews 11:13f)

Eternal Life and Abraham

Page 10: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

Abraham’s Promise and Hope: Were “far off” from his day Were not focused on “dirt”– They “confessed that

they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.”

Was focused on a city built by God, a “father land” (patrida, v. 14) that was “heavenly,” (epouranou, v. 16); that was better than the earth on which they were pilgrims, and “better” than the dirt that they left.

Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that

they might obtain a better resurrection. The heavenly city / country = the better

resurrection!

The Promises To Abraham

Page 11: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

What was Abraham’s eschatological hope? “Abraham longed to see my day, he saw

it, and was glad” (John 10:56)– Why? It was the New Creation / Zion (Heb. 11:13-

16) It was the city built by YHVH- the

“heavenly city” the “heavenly fatherland.”

Fact: His hope predated Moses and Israel (Gal. 3:17)– Abel-Noah-Abraham-Moses-Zion!

Fact: Abel’s Hope Was Noah’s Which Was Abraham’s, Which Was Israel’s!– One Hope!

Abraham’s eschatological hope cannot be limited to “Jewish eschatology” divorced from

Genesis– Nor Can It Be Divorced from Israel!

11

What Was Abraham’s Hope

Page 12: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

Abraham’s hope was the heavenly fatherland and the resurrection (Heb.

11:13f/35)

Zion is the locus of the resurrection of Isaiah 25:8– “On this mountain He shall

destroy death”

Therefore, Abraham’s resurrection hope was Zion.

Hebrews 12:21– “You have come to Mt. Zion!” The time for the resurrection to eternal life

in Zion had come! Zion was present in the first century!

12

Abraham- Zion - Resurrection

Page 13: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

Abraham’s one eschatological hope was “the better resurrection” - Zion

The Messianic Kingdom Banquet Would Be On Zion– Isaiah 25:6-Matthew 8:11

But, the Messianic Kingdom Banquet would be established when the sons of the kingdom

would be cast out (Matthew 8:11) The Sons of the Kingdom were cast out in AD

70 (Mt. 21:40-43) Abraham has received his kingdom hope, and

entered the Messianic Kingdom Banquet Therefore, Abraham’s one eschatological hope

of the EoM resurrection has been fulfilled.

If Not, Why Not? 13

Abraham-Resurrection and the Banquet

Page 14: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

The Messianic, Kingdom Banquet would be on Zion– at the time when “He shall destroy death”

The time when YHVH would destroy death is the resurrection of 1 Corinthians 15 (v. 55-56).

The Messianic Banquet is therefore, the time of the resurrection of 1 Corinthians 15.

The Messianic Banquet, when death would be destroyed– eternal life given– would be when Abraham, Isaac and Jacob would sit down in the kingdom (kingdom being = to resurrection!)

But, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob would sit down at the Banquet when “The Sons of the kingdom are cast out” (Luke 13:28f)

The Banquet and Resurrection

Page 15: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

It is admitted (in some circles) that Matthew 8 was fulfilled in AD 70!!

“The kingdom will be populated by Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, when the rebellious would be cast out. The kingdom population would also include ‘all the prophets’ (13:28).” (McDurmon, JvJ, 64; my emphasis).

If Abraham, and the worthies have sat down at the table in the kingdom, they have received eternal life– the resurrection of Isaiah 25 / 1 Corinthians 15!! Incorruptibility, Immortality!

Yet, clearly were not raised out of the literal dirt, and given new physical bodies!

The Banquet The Resurrection- The “Body”

Page 16: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

The Resurrection of 1 Cor. 15- in fulfillment of Isaiah 24-25- was the resurrection hope of Abraham and all the faithful worthies– all the way to Creation (Heb. 11:13-35).

The Resurrection of 1 Cor. 15- in fulfillment of Is. 24-25– would be on Zion: “On this Mountain… He shall destroy death…”

Therefore, the resurrection of 1 Corinthians 15 has been fulfilled.

You Cannot Affirm the Fulfillment of Matthew 8 / Hebrews 11-12– as many do--

Without Affirming the End of the Millennium Resurrection!

Daniel 12- Eternal Life and Peter Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to

His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen[a] you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

10 Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, 11 searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us[b] they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.

Page 19: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

Daniel 12 1 Peter Time of tribulation Fiery trial is among you– Messianic Woes Sufferings of Messiah Time of the end These last days Resurrection to eternal life Eternal life Time of the inheritance Eternal inheritance Vision was not understood Revealed to us Eternal life at resurrection Eternal inheritance at the parousia Revealed that it was not for them– The end of all things has drawn near It was far off The time has come

The correspondence between these texts is striking. Daniel, just as Peter said, was informed that the time of the end, the

resurrection to eternal life (i.e. salvation) was not for his day. But now, in Peter, the Spirit declared that the appointed time

(kairos) had arrived. This means that the resurrection of Daniel 12 was about to take

place at “the end” about which Peter said: “The End of all things has drawn near.”

Daniel 12 and Peter: The Incorruptible Inheritance

Page 20: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” 16 And the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying: “We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, The One who is and who was and who is to come, Because You have taken Your great power and reigned. The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, And the time of the dead, that they should be judged, And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, And those who fear Your name, small and great, And should destroy those who destroy the earth.” Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail.”

Philippians 1:19-23  For I know that this will turn out for my

deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.”

We do not know a lot about eternal life with Christ.

We do know it is “FAR BETTER!”

Page 26: “Many of those who sleep in the dust shall arise, some to everlasting life! Daniel’s prediction of coming “eternal life” resurrection proves that Daniel.

“ Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10 but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel”

I am the resurrection and the Life! This is Abraham’s hope to be fully realized

in Christ- he saw my day and was glad!
