DESCRIPTION THE SET

Bringing together carnival and the socio-political themes inspired by Orwell and Kafka, with circus and street theatre, Monkey Business is a medium-scale outdoor performance that tells the story of a travelling troupe of circus monkeys and their tyrannical tamer.

The performance begins with a 15 minute procession led by a small travelling circus wagon, gathering audiences as it traverses. Once in situ a lively 40-minute performance encompassing theatre, circus and magic delights audiences as they witness the struggle of power and dominance.

Whilst the show is an anthropomorphic reflection on our increasingly controlled society, it is playful, fun and vibrant - qualities commonly seen in Mandinga’s performances - and is suitable for families and young audiences all over the world.

Designed and developed by Mandinga’s Artistic Director and Co-Founder, Charles Beauchamp, the set is small, mobile multipurpose caravan. It contains a stage is fitted with a 4 -meter Chinese pole, sound and rigging are self contained, and it does not require power supply.

It will be used during both the procession and the show itself.

Technical Speci�cations:

BASIC DETAILS:

• 45 minutes once in situ, with a 15 minute processional walkabout.

• Two full length performances and optional 15-20 minute procession.

• Approximately 500 – 750 audience members per performance.

• Touring company: 5 x performers and 1 x stage manager.

• All sound, set and rigging for the show itself is self-contained in the set.

• Mains power to charge PA systems between shows.

• Parking for a LWB van.

• Dressing room space for 5 performers.

• Approx 2-3 hour get in to build set.

• A rehearsal or walk through on site before first performance.

• Flat surface hard standing is likely to be the only suitable ground for performances.

• 2 x festival stewards for each performance.1 x festival steward for processional walk about.

• Seating / dedicated wheelchair user space and site lines for disabled audiences.

• BSL interpreters is not required.
