  • QUICK START – IF YOU JUST CAN’T WAIT

    If you just can’t wait to hear the greateffects waiting for you in your new M350Dual Effects processor, follow the few stepsin this quick setup guide:

    • Unpack the M350 and check for possibledamages that could have been caused bytransport.

    • Read the safety instructions.• Take a few minutes to register online via:

    www.tcelectronic.com or send in theregistration card. Customers registeredonline will be notified directly via E-Mailabout new tips & tricks and manual updates.

    Consider the M350 as two effects processors inone box. We call these two processors“engines”. The Delay/Effects engine createsone of the following effects: Delay, Chorus,Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, De-Ess orCompression. The Reverb engine createsReverb.These two Engines can be used separately or inconjunction.

    Connections & Routing: The M350 has two routing options that requiretwo different ways of connecting.The Routing mode is set on the M350 rearpanel and should correspond to your currentsetup.

    Serial Routing (switch in OUT position)– utilizing both effect Engines in serial.

    Dual Input mode (switch in IN position)– ideal if you need to send signals from two

    different aux sends on your mixer and return ona stereo aux or two other channels.

    For detailed explanations on Routings andconnections please read page 23.

    • When all audio connections are made,connect power.

    • Set the M350 to Preset Off mode using thePRESET ON/OFF key:

    The M350 is in Preset Off mode when thedisplay reads as illustrated above.

    • Set all controls in 12 o’clock position to hear factory settings.(For Dual Input mode set MIX to 100%.)

    • Select an effect from the Delay/Effectssection.

    • Select a reverb type from the Reverb section.• Start playing music through the M350.• Adjust input level to a level just below the

    point where the two INPUT PPMs turn red.• Set the desired mix between the dry and wet

    signal of the entire M350 using the MIXcontrol.

    • Set the desired balance between theDelay/Effects engine and the Reverb engineusing the EFFECT BALANCE knob.

    • Now tweak the controls for the two sectionsuntil you have the intended effects.

    • (When using the Dual Input mode always setMIX to 100%)

    INTRODUCTION

    Congratulations on the purchase of your M350 Dual Effects Processor from TC Electronic

    M350 is an extremely user-friendly dual engine rack processor which is equally suited for live andstudio applications. It combines 15 quality reverbs with 15 multi-purpose effects including Delay,Modulation, De-Ess and compression. M350 features a front panel user interface, which isoptimized for easy and speedy operation in a live performance situation. High density 24 bitprocessing and AD/DA conversion deliver the full transparency of TC reverbs and effects. M350 comes with an easy-to-read preset display, and provides MIDI in/out, MIDI clock tempo sync,pedal control of tap tempo, and global bypass. It provides 5 direct access parameters for quick andeasy handling of parameter changes. The adaptive built-in power supply secures seamlessoperation at any main voltage with no need for clumsy wall-warts.

    FRONT PANEL OVERVIEW

    INPUT knobAdjusts the input level.

    1/L and 2/R LEDS3 color LEDs indicating inputlevel on left and right inputs.Green: -40dBYellow: -6dBRed: -1dB

    MIX knobAdjusts the mix between thewet and the dry signal. 100%“wet” is achieved at fullyclockwise position.

    EFFECTS BALANCE knobAdjusts the balance betweenthe Effects engine and theReverb engine. Maximumeffect from both engines isachieved at 12 o’clockposition.

    DIGI IN button and LEDLED OffDigital input is set to off. TheM350 processes only thesignal present on the analoginputs.

    LED GreenThe M350 is locked correctlyto the digital input signal.

    LED FlashingDigital in is selected but nodigital signal is received, or thesignal is corrupt. The M350automatically returns tointernal clock and analogoperation.

    BYPASS knob and LEDThe bypass function variesdepending on the selectedrouting (set on the rear panel):

    Dual Input routing mode:Bypass operates as “mute”.

    Serial routing mode:Bypass routes the input signalto output.

    MULTI-EFFECT selectorSelects between the 15 effects& Off in the Delay/Effectsengine.

    DELAY/TIMING knob DE& TAP keyTap the global tempo using theTAP key by tapping quarternotes. Now use the timingknob to multiply the tappedtempo.The range varies from 0.5 to 2.

    Example:• Tap quarter notes at tempo

    120 BPM. This equals 500milliseconds.

    • The range of the TIMINGknob is 0.5 to 2 giving you adelay time varying from:250ms to 1000ms.Note that the Slapbackdelay type has a shorterrange as the Slapback delaytype by nature is a shortdelay.

    DELAY/TIMING knob asAMOUNT/DRIVE controlFor the Compressor and De-Ess algorithms (marked withan “*”) this knob has differentfunctions:

    FEEDBACK/DEPTH knobControls the Feedback orDepth parameter depending ofthe selected effect.

    -3, -6, -12 LEDsThese LEDs indicate theapplied gain-reduction whenCompressor or De-Essalgorithms are selected.Notice that the compressoruses automatic make-up gainto naturally compensate for thereduced gain.

    REVERB Type selectorSelects between 15 differentreverb types or sets theReverb engine to “Off”.

    PRE DELAY knobControls the relative pre delayof the selected Reverb.

    DECAY knobControls the relative decay ofthe selected reverb.

    COLOR knobControls the relative color ofthe selected reverb.

    LOAD/HOLD TO STORE keyThis key has two functions:• Press once to load the

    preset selected via theCURSOR UP/DOWN keys.

    • Press and hold to store thecurrent preset.

    PRESET ON/OFF keyThe M350 has two presetmodes:Preset “Off” mode:The display reads “- -”.In this mode the M350 will playeffects according to the frontpanel controls.When going from preset “On”to preset “Off” mode theeffects will always be updatedaccording to the positions ofthe front controls.

    Preset “On” mode:The display reads a specificpreset number.In this mode you can recallvarious user presets by usingthe UP/DOWN arrows followedby LOAD.(Note that the M350 holds nostored factory presets apartfrom the default settings in thevarious effects).

    Toggling between the presetOn/ preset Off modesgenerates two situations:

    From “On” to “Off”:The preset is updatedaccording to the positions ofthe front controls.

    From “Off” to “On”:The previously recalled presetnumber starts blinking in thedisplay while the M350 stillprocesses the signal accordingto the front controls. Toactually load the preset, pressLOAD.

    Set MIDI channelPress and hold the PRESETON/OFF key approx. 2.5 sec.Now set the desired MIDIchannel 1 to 16 or “o” forOMNI (receives on allchannels) or OF for Off, usingthe ARROW UP/DOWN keys.Via this menu a Bulk Dumpcan also be performed (seepage 31).Press PRESET ON/OFF keyonce to exit the MIDI channelsset mode.

    EDITED KNOBS LEDsThe LEDs are relevant inPreset “On” mode only. Theyindicate when the frontcontrols do not match thesettings stored in the actuallyrecalled preset.

    Analog inputAnalog input on 1/4 inch connectors.Use left input for connecting a mono signal.

    If you connect a source to the left inputonly and use Dual Input mode, the inputsignal is fed to both the Delay/Effects

    engine and the Reverb engine. This means youcan then use the M350 as two independenteffect units with a common output.

    Analog outputAnalog output is a stereo output on two 1/4"jack connectors.

    Digital Input/OutputM350 can lock on an incoming 44.1 or 48kHzdigital signal via the S/PDIF digital inRCA/phono connector.

    M350 always sends on digital out.

    - in analog mode, the digital output’s clock rateis 44.1kHz.

    - when locked to a 44.1kHz digital input signal,the digital output’s clock rate is 44.1kHz.

    - when locked to a 48kHz digital input signal,the digital output’s clock rate is 48kHz.

    Pedal inputThe Pedal input allows you to bypass and “tap”the global tempo via momentary switches. Theglobal tempo can be used to set delay time.The connection is a 1/4" stereo jack withBypass on tip and Tap Tempo on ring.

    TYPICAL SETUPS

    Connecting and Setting up the M350Setting up the M350 is very easy. It is, however, important to connect and setup the M350 correctlyaccording to your application. Setting up basically means: connecting, selecting one of the tworouting options via the switch on the rear panel and finally setting the MIX control on the front panel.Find the setup you are about to create or similar on the following two pages – and follow theinstructions.

    Dual Input modeThis setup applies to a mixer with two (ormore) AUX sends. It utilizes the two effectsections in the M350 as two separate effectswith a common output.

    • On the rear panel, select Dual Input routingmode by leaving the switch in the “in” position.

    • Connect AUX 1 send to the M350’s left input.• Connect AUX 2 send to the M350’s right

    input.• Connect the M350’s left and right outputs to

    the stereo AUX L/R returns of either AUX 1or AUX 2.

    • Set MIX to 100% wet, as in this setup you donot want the direct signal to pass through theM350.

    • Set input level to 12 o’clock position.• Set BALANCE to 12 o’clock position.• Select Reverb type and Delay/Effects type

    using the selectors on the front panel.• Set the AUX return level on the mixer to

    approx. 50%.• Now slowly turn up the AUX sends 1 and 2

    on the mixer for the channels you wish toadd effect to.

    • Adjust/fine-tune the M350 input level so theINPUT LED on the front panel often isorange but only rarely peaks at red color.

    TYPICAL SETUPS

    Serial SetupThis setup utilizes the M350 as a delay-effects processor connected in serial to areverb. It is ideal when you wish to addreverb to a signal already processed by oneof the delay-effects. The illustrated setup isa typical live instrument setup.

    • On the rear panel, select Serial routing byleaving the switch in “out” position.

    • Connect a line signal directly from yourinstrument or from a DI-box to the M350’sinputs (use the left input for mono signals).

    • Connect the M350’s left and right outputs tomixer or amplification.

    • Set input level to 12 o’clock position.• Set MIX level to 12 o’clock position.• Set BALANCE to 12 o’clock position.• Adjust/fine-tune the M350’s input level so the

    INPUT LED on the front panel often isorange but only rarely peaks at red color.

    • Select Reverb type and Delay/Effects typeusing the selectors on the front panel.

    • Now fine-tune:- MIX between wet and dry signal.- BALANCE between the two effect engines.

    “Parallel Setup” (analog input only)This setup utilizes the M350 as a dualprocessor on a mono signal with a commonstereo output.

    • On the rear panel, select Dual Input routingmode by leaving the ROUTING switch in the “in”position.

    • Connect AUX1 (or any) to left input.Make NO connections to right input. The leftinput signal is automatically fed to the right inputinternally in the M350.

    • Connect the M350’s left and right outputs to thestereo AUX L/R returns of either AUX 1 or AUX 2.

    • Set MIX to 100% wet, as in this setup you do notwant the direct signal to pass through the M350.

    • Set INPUT level to 12 o’clock position.• Set BALANCE to 12 o’clock position.• Select Reverb type and Delay/Effects type using

    the selectors on the front panel.• Set the AUX return level on the mixer to approx.

    50%.• Now slowly turn up the AUX sends.• Adjust/fine-tune the M350 input level so the input

    LED on the front panel often is orange but onlyrarely peaks at red color.

    Controlling M350 via MIDIVarious functions of the M350, such as presetrecall and Tap Tempo, can be controlled via anexternal MIDI device. This example shows how to control the M350with a TC Electronic G•Minor* foot controller. Acomplete list of CC values can be found onpage 31.

    • Connect the G•Minor’s MIDI Out to the M350’sMIDI In.

    • Connect the M350's MIDI Out to the G•Minor'sMIDI In.

    You are now able to recall the stored presets in theM350 using the UP/DOWN switches on theG•Minor. You can also tap the Global Tempo usingthe HOLD switch.

    TYPICAL SETUPS

    Guitar SetupsThis setup utilizes the M350 as a delay-effectsprocessor connected in serial to a reverb. It isideal when you wish to add reverb to a signalalready processed by one of the delay-effects. This is a typical guitar setup.

    • On the rear panel, select SERIAL routing byleaving the switch in the “out” position.

    • Connect your guitar to the preamp’s input.• Connect the preamp's output to the M350's left

    input.• Connect the M350’s left output to the input on

    your amp. Use the regular input or the return onan effect loop if you use combos or heads. If you are using a regular power-amp andspeakers simply use the inputs.

    • Set INPUT level to 12 o’clock position.• Set MIX level to 12 o’clock position.• Set BALANCE to 12 o’clock position.• Adjust/fine-tune the M350 input level so the

    INPUT LED on the front panel often is orangebut only rarely peaks at red color.

    • Select Reverb type and Delay/Effects type usingthe selectors on the front panel.

    • Now fine-tune:- MIX between wet and dry signal- BALANCE between the two effect engines.

    M350 in an effects loop• On the rear panel select SERIAL routing by

    leaving the switch in “out” position.• Connect your guitar to the amp’s input.• Connect the effect-loop send to the M350’s left

    input.• Connect the M350’s left output to the effect-loop

    return.• Set input level to 12 o’clock position.• If the effects loop is serial type (see the amp’s

    owner’s manual), set MIX level to 12 o’clockposition.If the effects-loop is parallel type, set MIX to100% (fully clockwise position).

    • Set BALANCE to 12 o’clock position.• Adjust/fine-tune the M350’s input level so the

    INPUT LED on the front panel often is orangebut only rarely peaks at red color.

    • Select Reverb type and Delay/Effects type usingthe selectors on the front panel.

    • Now fine-tune:- BALANCE between the two effect engines.

    Digital Setup - M350 as InsertThis setup is ideal if you are using the M350as a digital insert effect on your hard diskrecording system.This setup requires that you are using anI/O card with S/PDIF In/Out.

    • Select Serial Routing by leaving theROUTING switch on the rear panel in “out”position.

    • Connect the M350’s S/PDIF digital out to thedigital input on your soundcard.

    • Connect the digital out on your soundcard tothe digital in on the M350.

    • Set your soundcard to act as master clock.There can be different names for this setting,but “Internal Clock”, “Internal Sync” or“Master” are commonly used terms.(This is probably set via you hard diskrecording program. Please refer to itsowner's manual.)

    • Press the DIGI IN button on the M350.• If the DIGI IN LED is green, the M350 is

    locked correctly on the digital input signal. • If the LED is flashing, digital in is selected

    but no digital signal is received within 5seconds, or the signal is corrupt.The M350 automatically returns to internalclock and analog operation but will continueto look for digital signal, and the DIGI IN LEDon the front panel will keep blinking.Check cables and make sure that yoursoundcard is set as master.

    • Once set up, you can use the M350 as aplug-in on your hard disk recording system, ifthis function is supported on your system.

    Digital Setup - M350 as A to D converterThe analog to digital converters in the M350are superior to most converters used onsoundcards in the affordable price range.You can therefore most likely benefit fromusing the M350 as an A to D converter whendoing hard disk recordings.Feed the M350 with an analog input e.g.from you mixer or instrument line signal,and you are feeding a high quality digitalsignal from the S/PDIF out to your digitalrecording system.You can of course add effects to the trackswhile recording if you wish. But the essenceof this setup is to get best the possible A toD conversion by skipping the A to Dconverters on your soundcard.

    • Select Serial or Dual Input routing mode viathe ROUTING switch on the rear panel. Note that if you do not add effects to thetracks while recording and use Bypass mode,you must use Serial routing.

    • Feed any analog signal to the analog inputon the M350.

    • Connect the M350’s S/PDIF digital out to theDigital input on your soundcard.

    • The M350 must act as master clock in thissetup and you must therefore set yoursoundcard to act as slave.There can be different names for this settingbut “External Clock”, “External Sync” or“Slave” are commonly used terms.(This is probably set up via your hard diskrecording program. Please refer to its ownersmanual.)

    • For pure A to D conversion with no effectsadded, both Effect Type selectors should beset to Off.

    • Adjust input level gain using the INPUT levelknob.

    INPUT GAINThis knob controls the input level for both theanalog and digital input options. For optimalperformance of the M350, a well-adjusted inputlevel is essential.

    1/L – 2/R INPUT LEDsThese LEDs signal using three colors.Green : Indicates that you are “well on the

    safe side”Yellow : Reaching optimal performance.Red : Should only occasionally blink at

    absolute peaks in the material you are feeding the M350 with.

    The INPUT knob adjusts the level for both leftand right input channels. If there is a significantdifference between the input of the left and rightchannels, you should adjust the output of thedevice feeding the M350.

    DIG. INThe M350 has both analog and digital inputoptions. The digital input is the S/PDIF typeconnected via RCA phono cables. To select/deselect the digital input, press theDIG IN button once.

    The green LED next to the DIG IN button willindicate various states.

    LED OffDigital input is set to “off”. The M350 processesonly the signal present on the analog inputs.This is done at an internal sample rate of44.1kHz.

    LED GreenThe M350 is locked correctly to the signal onthe digital input. With the digital signal a clock issupplied. The M350 can lock to either a 44.1 ora 48kHz sample rate frequency,, which are themost commonly used sample rate frequencies.E.g. a regular CD is 44.1kHz.

    Flashing LEDIf digital in is selected but no digital signal isreceived, or if the signal is corrupt, the M350automatically returns to internal clock andanalog operation. However, the M350 willcontinue to look for a digital signal on theS/PDIF input. This is indicated by the flashingLED. If you wish to stay in analog mode, pressDIG IN once and the LED will stop flashing.

    Dual Input mode – LEDWhen this LED is lit (green) it indicates that theDual Input routing mode has been selected viathe switch located on the rear panel.Read more about the Dual Input mode on page23.

    MIX RATIOSets the mix between dry and wet signal. TheMix parameter operates differently dependingon the selected routing:

    In “Dual S/R” routing, “MIX” controls the overallwet/dry mix of both the Delay/Effects and theReverb section.

    In “Serial” routing, “MIX” functionality in the“Effects” section depends on the selectedeffect:

    The Compressor and De-Esser effects have afixed mix setting of 100% in Serial routing.

    The Chorus, Flanger, Phaser and Tremoloeffects have a fixed mix setting of 50% in Serialrouting.

    Reverb and Delay mix level is set using theMIX knob in Serial routing. To individually adjustthe mix setting between Reverb and Delay, usethe BALANCE knob.

    BYPASSThe bypass function operates differentlydepending on the selected routing.

    Dual Input routing:Bypass acts as a mute feature, i.e. no signal issent to the outputs when Bypass is active.

    Serial routing:Here the bypass function simply passes thesource signal unprocessed to output.

    EFFECTS BAL.Sets the balance between the two engines.Both engines have their maximum output at the12 o’clock position.Fully clockwise or counter-clockwise settingscan be considered as 100% bypass of one ofthe engines.

    TAP key and TIMING knobDelay Effects:The tempo of the delay effects is set using boththe TAP key and the TIMING knob. By tapping the TAP key you specify a “globaltempo” that you can increase/decrease usingthe TIMING knob, which operates as amultiplier.The range of the TIMING knob is 0.5 to 2.

    ExampleLet us say that you tap quarter notes in tempo120BPM using the TAP key. With the TIMINGknob in 12 o’clock position you now have adelay time of 500ms*.

    If you turn the TIMING knob fully counter-clockwise, the actual Delay time will be 0.5 times 500ms = 250ms

    If you turn the TIMING knob fully clockwise, thetempo will be:2 times 500ms = 1000ms (1 second)

    When powering up the M350, the default globaltempo is 120BPM, but as explained above theposition of the TIMING knob defines the actualtempo.

    *The Slapback Delay is characterized by veryshort delay times. Accordingly, the timing rangefor this delay type is much shorter.

    TIMING knob – De-Ess and Compression:For the De-Ess algorithm the TIMING knobcontrols the Amount parameter.For the Compressor algorithm the TIMING knobcontrols the Drive parameter.The higher you set the TIMING knob, theharder the Compressor is hit. Or you could saythat the threshold is lowered and make-up gainis applied at the same time as levelcompensation.

    TIMING knob – Chorus, Flanger, Phaser andTremolo:Increases/decreases the tempo. Remember that the default setting suggestedby TC Electronic is achieved by setting theknob in 12 o’clock.

    FEEDBACK/DEPTH– FREQUENCY/RATIO knobThis knob changes functionality with theselected algorithms.

    It is worth noticing that the range of each ofthese parameters will vary from algorithm toalgorithm. As an example it is possible to set a muchlonger decay time for a Classic or Concert HallReverb than for a Drum Box.

    Pre DelayA short delay placed between the direct signaland the reverb’s diffuse field. By using pre-delay the source material is kept clear andundisturbed by the more diffuse “reverb-tail”arriving shortly after.

    DecayThe Decay parameter determines the length ofthe reverb diffuse field. The length is defined asthe time it takes for the reverb to decayapproximately 60dB.

    ColorVaries the “color” of the reverb. From dark tocrisp and bright, the Color parameter can reallychange the characteristics and style of thereverb.

    STORE – RECALL & THE DISPLAY

    Preset ModesThe M350 holds two significantly differentmodes. To toggle between these modes, pressthe PRESET ON/OFF key.

    “Preset On” modeIn this mode it is possible to load any of thepreviously stored presets.The “Preset On” mode is active when thedisplay shows location numbers from 1 to 99.

    If you try to load a preset from a locationwhere no preset is stored, no action willtake place.

    “Preset Off” modeIn “Preset Off” mode the M350 processes thesignal according to the positions of the frontcontrols – a “what you see is what you hear”setting.

    Once you have accessed the Preset Offmode and return to the Preset On mode,the preset number will blink, indicatingthat you must press LOAD to recall thesettings stored with that particular preset.

    DisplayEdited knobs LEDs(relevant only in “Preset On” mode)These LEDs refer to the 10 front panel controls.See illustration above.They indicate when the front controls do notmatch the current settings of the active preset.

    When you turn any of the knobs and pass theposition physically matching the currentparameter value, the parameter is “grabbed”,the LED is unlit and you can adjust theparameter.

    Load/Store PresetsLoad User Preset• Enter “Preset On” mode using the PRESET

    ON/OFF key. The M350 is in Preset Onmode when the display shows locationnumbers 1 to 99.Use the UP/DOWN arrows to select desiredpreset (1-99).

    • The digits are now blinking to indicate thatyou are previewing the preset and that it hasnot yet been recalled.

    • Press LOAD to recall the preset. The digitsnow are steady.

    Store User Preset• Enter “Preset On” mode using the PRESET

    ON/OFF key. The M350 is in Preset Onmode when the display shows locationnumbers 1 to 99.

    • Use the UP/DOWN arrows to select desiredpreset location where you intend to store thepreset (1-99).

    • The digits are now blinking to indicate thatyou have not yet stored the preset.

    • Press the LOAD (HOLD TO STORE) key for approx. 2.5 seconds until the digits turn steady.

    MISCELLANEOUS

    Factory PresetsThe M350 holds no conventional factorypresets. When all the controllers are in 12o’clock position, the M350 is “in neutral”,meaning that all parameters are set assuggested by TC Electronic. Combining the 16positions of both the DELAY/EFFECTS and theREVERB selector, you actually have access to256 "factory" presets.

    MIDI CH.Via an external MIDI device it is possible torecall presets and control the M350’sparameters. To enable communication, theexternal device and the M350 have to send andreceive data on the same MIDI Channel. The M350 can be set to receive on a specificMIDI channel, none or all channels.

    • Press and hold PRESET ON/OFF. Thecurrently selected MIDI channel is displayed.

    Assuming the M350 is “right out of the box” orthat you have performed a Reset procedure asdescribed on page 31, the display now shows:

    - indicating that channel 1 is selected and theM350 can receive MIDI information on channel 1.

    • Use the UP/DOWN arrows to select MIDIchannels 1 to 16.

    • “O” indicates Omni, which means that the M350 can receive MIDI information on allchannels.

    • “OF” indicates that the M350 will ignore anyincoming MIDI messages.

    • Press LOAD to verify and exit menu.

    SysEx IDThe M350’s SysEx ID is always identical to theset MIDI Channel.

    Application Software versionThis number indicates the currently loadedapplication software and is relevant only forservicing purposes.

    • Press and hold PRESET ON/OFF and usethe UP/DOWN arrows to select “AP” asdisplayed below.

    The display will flash between “AP” (forapplication) and the currently loaded applicationsoftware.

    Front Software version This number indicates the currently loaded frontsoftware and is relevant only for servicingpurposes.

    • Press and hold PRESET ON/OFF and usethe UP/DOWN arrows to select “Fr” asdisplayed below.

    The display will flash between “Fr” (for “Front software”) and the currently loaded frontsoftware number.

    ROUTINGS

    Parallel Routing (analog input only)This routing gives you the opportunity to havetwo effects in parallel on a single mono signal.• Select the Dual Inputs routing by leaving the

    ROUTING switch on the rear panel in “In”position.

    • Connect a mono signal to left input.The input signal is now split and fed to both theDelay/Effects engine and the Reverb engine.Both engines then use left and right outputs ascommon outputs.

    It is essential that you have selected the correctrouting according to your setup:

    Serial RoutingWith this routing, the two engines are used as achain of two effects where the signal firstpasses the Delay/Effects engine and thereafterthe Reverb engine.

    This is the routing to select when you want toadd reverb to a signal after the signal has beenprocessed by the Delay/Effects engine.Select the Serial Routing on the rear panel andconnect the M350 according to this illustration:

    Dual Input routing modeBy routing two different signals to the two effectengines, you can utilize the M350 as twoseparate effect units with a common output.

    Use this if you wish to use the M350 e.g. to adddelay to a guitar on one channel and reverb toa vocal on another channel.

    DELAY-EFFECTS

    This manual section explains the function of the front panel controls as well as the algorithmparameters in the Delay-effects section.

    Example – TIMING knobLet us just explore the Tap Tempo and timingfunctions a bit further:With a Studio Delay algorithm selected, you tapquarter notes in tempo 120BPM using the TAPkey. With the TIMING knob in 12 o’clockposition you now have a Delay time of 500ms.

    If you turn the TIMING knob fully counter-clockwise, the actual delay time will be:0.5 times 500ms= 250ms

    If you turn the TIMING knob fully clockwise, thetempo will be:2 times 500ms=1000ms (1 second)

    When using the M350 in a Dual Inputsetup, the MIX knob should be set to100% wet.

    Delay TypesDynamic DelayThe Dynamic Delay initially introduced in thewell-recognized TC 2290 is a function thatallows the dynamics of the input level toactively alter the delay’s output level. The basic idea is to have a lower level of thedelay repeats while the instruments are played(or vocals are sung) and an increased level ofdelay when no input is present.This is a function that leaves the sourcematerial clear and undisturbed while played anddelicately accompanied by the delay betweenphrases.With the correct settings, you will be amazedhow you can use delay effects on materialwhere you previously never considered this anoption.

    Delay – ControlsTIMING knobBoth the TIMING and the TAP key are usedto specify the desired tempo of the repeats.A tempo is tapped on the TAP key and youmultiply this tempo using the TIMING knob.The range of the TIMING knob is 0.5 to 2.See example below.

    FEEDBACK knobThe FEEDBACK knob sets the number ofdelay repeats. Leaving the knob in 12 o’clock position gives you the startingpoint suggested by TC Electronic.

    DELAY-EFFECTS

    Studio DelayThe Studio Delay algorithm will give you a clearreproduction of the material fed to the M350. To soften the Delay (as it is commonly done instudio productions), the Studio Delay uses asubtle yet significant HiCut at a relatively highcrossover frequency.

    Triplets DelayTap the tempo in 1/4 notes and the delayrepeats will play in 1/4 note triplets according tothe tapped tempo.

    Soft DelayThe Soft Delay rolls of the high-end frequenciesslightly, giving you delay repeats with less edgethat very often blend better and sound morenatural in the mix.

    PingPong DelayThe PingPong Delay basically pans the delayrepeats from left to right and back whilekeeping the input signal at its original position.This gives a very wide-spread special effect.

    Slapback DelayThe Slapback delay is a very short delay withonly a single or a few repeats. It is commonlyused as a “doubling-effect”, making theprocessed material seem more massive. Shortslapback delays are also often used on funkyrhythm guitars – a bit longer on rockabilly guitaror vocals.

    Compressor

    Compression basicsA compressor is a tool used to reduce thedynamic content of a signal. When the signal isabove the set threshold, the compressor startsreducing the output level according to the setratio. A signal with a reduced dynamic range ismuch easier to control and will have a moreconsistent sound in any audio production.

    Illustration:

    Be aware that compression is a powerful tool.Applying the right amount of compression tospecific instruments will create a homogenous,well-defined result. Applying too muchcompression will probably create a lessmusical, flat and uninteresting sound.

    Compressor ControlsFor optimal “ease of use” we have simplifiedand reduced the common compressioncontrols to the following controls:

    Drive (TIMING KNOB)The higher the Drive setting is, the lower theThreshold point is set – and the harder youwill “hit” the Compressor. In other words:The higher the Drive setting, the morecompression is added.

    Ratio (FEEDBACK/DEPTH KNOB)This parameter sets the amount of gainreduction of the signal above the“Threshold” – see Drive parameter.

    DELAY-EFFECTS

    Parameters associated with CompressionThresholdAs soon at the input signal is above the setthreshold point, the output level of thecompressor will be reduced according to thespecified ratio.

    RatioSpecifies how aggressive the gain reduction ofthe signal should be. With a ratio setting of e.g.4:1, for every 4dB that the signal is above thethreshold point, only 1dB is passed to theoutput.

    AttackSpecifies how fast the gain reduction specifiedby the ratio parameter should be applied. Theattack rate of the M350 compressor is fixed.

    Auto Make-up gainSince the output of the signal above the setthreshold point is reduced, the entire signal willappear to be at a lower volume. In manycompressors (including the M350’scompressor), Auto Make-up gain is usedcompensate for this loss of gain.This way, the output level is maintained andonly the dynamic range is changed.

    De-Esser

    A De-Esser is a kind of compressor used toreduce only specific sibilant frequencies.Typically the “s” sounds can be far toodominant in a vocal or backing vocal track andthe track would therefore often benefit frombeing processed by a De-Esser.

    Chorus and Flanger

    A Chorus/Flanger is basically a short delaymodulated by an LFO (Low FrequencyOscillator). The differences between chorus andflanging are the applied delay time and thefeedback parameter in the Flanger. The modulation of the short delay gives verysmall variations in pitch. These pitch changesblended with the direct sound produce theChorus/Flanger sound.A chorus effect is typically used as a smoothingeffect while the Flanger is more in the genre of“special effects”.

    Smooth Chorus & Lush ChorusThe Soft Chorus is ideal for silk-smoothsoftening of the signal. The Lush Chorus is abetter choice for more intense chorus sounds.

    Instrument FlangerThe M350 Flanger is optimized to instrumentssuch as guitars, bass and keyboards.

    Chorus/Flanger –ControlsTIMING knobIn the Chorus/Flanger algorithms, theTIMING knob sets the speed of the effect.

    Tremolo

    A tremolo is basically a repeated level changecontrolled by an LFO. The M350 offers a SoftTremolo that uses a “triangular” wave shape.Please see the illustration below.

    Phaser

    Smooth Phaser and Vintage PhaserThe Vintage Phaser utilizes four all-pass filters.These filters create comb-looking characteristics.When the filtered sound is mixed with the directsound, the “phasing sound” occurs. The Smooth Phaser utilizes twelve all-passfilters. It is the higher number of filters in theSmooth Phaser that allows the Smooth Phaserto sound smoother than the Vintage type.

    Phaser – ControlsTIMING knobIn the Phaser algorithm, the TIMING knobsets the speed of the Phaser.

    FEEDBACK/DEPTH knobIn the Phaser algorithm, theFEEDBACK/DEPTH knob sets the depth ofthe phasing effect.

    Tremolo – ControlsTIMING knobIn the Tremolo algorithm, the TIMING knobsets the speed of the tremolo.

    FEEDBACK/DEPTH knobIn the Tremolo algorithm, theFEEDBACK/DEPTH knob sets the depth ofthe tremolo effect.

  • Perception of Reverb types may vary fromperson to person. This is a rather subjectiveissue to discuss, describe or even define.However, over the years a generalperception of basic reverb types hasevolved. We choose to briefly describe theReverb types found in the M350 like this:

    TC Classic HallThe TC Classic Hall simulates a rather largeHall and preserves the natural characteristics ofthe source material.This is excellent for many studio applicationsrequiring medium to long decay times andespecially on vocal material.

    CathedralWhere the TC Classic Hall is a reverb with asmooth diffuse field, the Large Cathedral has amuch more uneven diffused field. Emphasis onthe reflections deriving from many hardsurfaces and the high amount of Lo Colornaturally occurring in this type of rooms give anexcellent simulation of a large Cathedral.

    Vocal – ReverbThis preset will match and refine vocal sourceswhich need that “extra something”. The VocalReverb preset gives you a soft and mellow tonethat is identical to the reflections you get frommedium sized rooms with wooden surfaces.Use it to obtain a personal yet subtle and agilesound on your vocals.

    Live – VocalFor live purposes, a rather grainy and brightReverb is needed to cut through the typicalbackground noise at live locations. The LiveReverb should be used with medium to longDecay times and will work excellently both onvocals and instruments requiring a clear andobvious reverb.

    Hall – AcousticThe Hall Acoustic preset is a broad yet slightlydiffuse reverb. It simulates a large environmentbut adds a distinctive acoustic flavor to thesource material. You can use this reverb withgreat effect on drums and other percussivematerial, but it can also be used when you wantto create an unbiased yet genuine ambience.

    Each of these reverb types has been createdand fine-tuned by the highly experienced staffat TC Electronic and utilizes the vastexperience in producing high quality Reverbsaccumulated over the past years. And althoughthe M350 is a very compact effects unit in theaffordable price range, there is no compromisewhen it comes the reverb quality.

    To find the best starting point foryour application, set the threecontrols in the Reverb section to“12 o’clock” position and “take atrip” round the various reverbtypes.

    By leaving the controls in 12 o’clock positionyou will hear our suggested settings for eachreverb type.Once you have found the reverb type closest tothe desired sound, start twisting the controls.

    Pre DelayA short delay placed between the direct signaland the Reverb Diffuse field. By using pre-delay, the source material is kept clear andundisturbed by the more diffuse reverb diffusefield arriving shortly after.

    REVERBS

    Drum – AmbienceThis reverb was especially designed to emulatethe recording rooms typically used for drums.The Drum Ambience is a 80’s style ambientroom with only very short reflections. The Drum Ambience emulates the reflections ina medium sized drum room with a high ceiling– giving longer but natural sounding reflectionscompared to the Drum Room.

    Drum RoomThe Drum Room reverb will flavor your drumsand percussive source material with greatelegance. The preset simulates a medium-sizedroom that gives you a relatively long yetnatural-sounding reverb. It preserves the fullspectrum of the source while giving it anunmistakably quality of brilliance and presence.

    AmbienceWith focus on the Early Reflections that definethe perception of a room size, the AmbienceReverb is typically used on dry recordings ordry drum samples to emulate a feeling ofenvironment. “Ambience” and “Room definition”are the keywords here.

    Living RoomAs the direct opposite to the Cathedral type, theLiving Room algorithm simulates a relativelysmall, well furnished room. In such a room,many reflections are absorbed by softmaterials, and the sound is reflected andsustained only by the walls (covered withwallpaper), windows and maybe some furniture.

    NearfieldIf you want a reverb that is tight andcharacterized by early reflections, the Nearfieldreverb will be your preferred choice. It emulatesthe small amount of natural reverb that occursin e.g. a studio control room. Use this reverbtype to obtain a tight, bright and “smack-in-the-face” sound.

    Damped RoomThe Damped Room reverb can be used withgreat results on source material which needs tobe very lightly reverberated. This algorithmsimulates a small studio or vocal box that iscompletely padded with soft and absorbingmaterial. It gives you a very tight and “to-the-point” kind of sound.

    Live StageIf you are playing live, you might want a reverbthat can cut through all the background noisewhich is so characteristic of live gigs. The LiveStage preset gives you a grainy and brightreverb that will work equally well on vocals andinstruments that need to be distinct and to thepoint.

    MIDI Bulk DumpBy performing a MIDI bulk dump, you candump all presets to an external MIDI device(e.g. a sequencer) for backup purposes.• Press and hold the PRESET ON/OFF key for

    approximately 2.5 seconds.• Use the ARROW UP/DOWN keys to select

    Bulk Dump mode.

    The display will show:

    • Set the receiving device to its MIDI BulkReceive Mode. Please refer to the usermanual of the receiving device if you do notknow how to do this. With a standard MIDIsequencer, arming a MIDI track for recordingshould be sufficient.

    • Press LOAD once, and the MIDI Bulk Dumpwill be sent.

    The M350 is always ready to receive aMIDI bulk dump unless its MIDI ReceiveChannel is set to “OF”.

    Reset ProcedureIf you would like to do a complete reset of theM350 and return to factory settings, follow thisprocedure:• Power the M350 down by disconnecting the

    power cord.• Press and hold TAP while reconnecting

    power. The display will show a flashing “R”. • Press Load to reset.• Switch the unit off and on again.The unit is now reset.

    Be aware that all User presets will belost when performing a factory reset!
