James Trussart began crafting metal violins, dulcimers and hurdy gurdies in France in the late 1970’s before switching his focus to guitars. He is one of the few builders who has broken the mold of traditional guitar making. Settled in Los Angeles since 2000, he provides rare and collectible handcrafted instruments. Working with steel as his primary material, he produces instruments that are as unique in appearance as they are in tone.

The SteelPhonic is a steel hollow-bodied guitar that is designed to capture the ringing, metallic tones of a classic resonator guitar. It is built around a metal candy box that is attached to a uniquely flavored custom transducer pickup that can be blended with the sound of the mini-humbuckers, creating an array of pleasing original sounds in mono or stereo that no other guitar can produce.
