Incisors are the front teeth

Humans have 8 incisor teeth

They have 4 at the top and 4 at the bottom

Incisors are made for tearing food – like when eating a chicken leg

Canines

Canines are the longer pointy teeth Humans have 4 canines 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom They help the incisors to tear food by

firmly holding the food in place Eruption of the canine teeth normally

happens between 11 years old and 12 years old

Pre-molars

Premolar teeth are found between the canines and molar teeth

Humans have 8 premolar teeth 4 at the top and 4 at the bottom Premolars are used to chew food. Another

word for chewing is mastication

Molars

Molars are the teeth that are furthest back in the mouth

Humans have 12 molar teeth Molar teeth are in sets of three with 6 in

the top and 6 in the bottom The farthest back molar is called the

wisdom tooth Molars are for grinding food after it has

been chewed

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth normally appear between 17 years old and 25 years old

Most adults have 4 wisdom teeth Sometimes wisdom teeth effect other

teeth as they develop because they ‘impact’ on them. This means they grow sideways and push against the other teeth which can hurt. If this happens sometimes they need to be taken out and this can happen in hospital

How to keep your teeth healthy

Eat foods that are low in sugar like vegetables, cereals, nuts and fruit (even though fruits have their own sugars inside)

Drink lots of milk and eat plenty of diary products like cheese and yogurts because they have calcium and vitamin C which helps make strong teeth

Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each time
