HOTVOLC OBSERVING SYSTEM (OPGC/LMV*)

6 geostationnary satellites : MSG-0, MTSAT, MSG-RSS, Meteosat-7, GOES-E, GOES-W

Monitoring of all volcanoes on earth Time resolution up to 1 image / 5 mins and 24h/24h

3 Polar-orbiting satellites : MODIS, AVHRR, ASTER, (OMI, CALIOP)

4 eruptive products : Ash product, SO2 product, Lava product, RGB product

HotVolc goals and capabilities

WEZARD Workshop ; May 30th – June 1st 2012 ; WMO Geneva, Switzerland

HOTVOLC OBSERVING SYSTEM (OPGC/LMV*)

1. Early detection of the eruptive activity (lava flows and ash plumes, alarm procedure)

2. Localize and track eruptive volcanic products (ground / atmosphere)

3. Real-time first order retrieval (semi-quantitative – scaled intensity 1-10)

4. Near-real-time quantitative retrieval (i.e., ash concentration mg/m3)

5. Real-time web diffusion of interpreted data to the end-users (i.e., decision makers, scientists)6. Build a complete/continuous open-access archive of interpreted data

Eyjafjallajökull6-8 Mai 2010

NRT Ash concentration (mg/m3) calculated every 15 mins with Meteosat

Related products:

- Ash cloud height & extent- Ash radius and distribution

Ash [0,5-6 mg/m3]

Case study : 2 crisis
