On behalf o f the N A IA ’s more than 500 m em ber institutions we thank all of those present here today for your loyal support during the 1980 football season.

The two teams partic ipating in today’s D ivision 11 quarterfinal round game have earned this d istinction by their ranking in the final regular-season ranking conducted by the N AIA Football Coaches Association. The winner of today’s game w ill jo in the three other winners in the semifinal round w ith games to be played on December 6.

A cham pionship event of this significance involves the dedication and involvem ent of college and com m unity leaders and is a tribute to the great “ Fall Spectacle” — college football.

May this be an outstanding athletic cooperation in the best trad ition of Am erican higher education and serve to bring the com m unity, college students and parents into closer cooperation.

C urrently the NAIA conducts 15 nationa l cham -p ionsh ips in 14 d iffe ren t sports. W om en’s cham p ion-sh ips and a W om en’s D iv is ion have been added to the NAIA program e ffective 1980 - 81, by vote o f the m em bership.

The 1980 season marks the th ird year o f a NAIA foo t-ball p layoff form at that assures e ight teams in Division I and eight teams in Division II an o p p o rtu n ity to c o m p le te fo r coveted national titles in each divi-sion. Texas A&l won the 1979 Divi-sion I crown, narrowly edging Cen-tral Oklahoma 2 0 -1 4 before 9,300 fans in the nationally televised Palm Bowl in McAllen, Texas. The Palm Bowl attendance was more than double that of any other 1979 fo o tb a ll p la yo ff gam e am ong teams com peting below the major level. Findlay College o f Ohio, a fina lis t in 1978, exploded for a 51 - 6 win over Northwestern of Iowa in the 1979 Divi-sion II final game.I echo the sentim ents of our entire membership when I say thanks to you for your loyal support in helping make today’s football game an outstanding ath letic com petition in the best trad ition of American higher education. Dr. David O lson, D irector of Physical Education at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma,W ashington , is representing the NAIA N ationa l Executive Com -m ittee for the D iv is ion II N ational C ham pionsh ip Footba ll Program.

A ll NAIA cham pionsh ip meets, gam es and tournam en ts are under the d irec t supervis ion and con tro l o f the NAIA N ationa l Executive C om m ittee.

NAIAC provides coaches in all sports w ith a strong voice in es tab lish ing rules and standards in each sport. The A ll-Am erica Awards program is the respons ib ility of the Awards C om m ittee w hich is represented by the o ffice rs o f NAIAC.

The 11-person N ationa l Executive C om m ittee is the governing body e lected by the m em bership o f NAIA at the Annual M eeting o f the organization. The Executive C om m ittee h ires the Executive D irector, who conducts the business o f the o rgan i-zation from N ationa l Headquarters.

A subsid iary o f the NAIA, the NAIA C oaches’ A ssoc ia tion is

charged w ith respons ib ility fo r carrying on a program benefic ia l to the coaches of the o rgan i-zation.

DR. J . GORDON KINGSLEYPresident o f W illiam Jew e ll CollegeDr. J. Gordon Kingsley was inaugurated in September 1980 as twelfth president of W illiam Jewell College.

He firs t came to W illiam Jewell, as a teacher, in 1960. He became director o f special programs in 1969. in 1973 he was appointed associate dean and in 1976 he was named dean of the college, a position he served un til his step up to the presidency th is year. “

Before jo in ing the Jewell staff in 1969, Dr. Kingsley was professor and coord ina tor of in te rd isc ip lina ry studies at Kentucky Southern College.

He is a graduate of M ississippi College and holds a master’s degree in English from the University of M issouri-Columbia. He earned bachelor of d iv in ity and doctor of theology degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Sem inary and has done post doctora l work at other institu tions. Mercer University in 1980 awarded Dr. Kingsley the honorary doctor o f humanities degree.

LARRY HAMILTONDirector o f M e n ’s a th le t ic sA 1961 graduate of W illiam Jewell College, Larry Ham ilton jo ined the Jewell staff as coach and teacher in 1967. In 1971 he was named directo r of men’s athletics.

Ham ilton previously held positions at Rockport, Mo., and Park College.

in add ition to his post as ath le tic director, Ham ilton serves as men’s swim coach. Under his direction , 30 swimmers have qualified for the national championships in the last seven years, w ith five swimmers earning A ll-Am erican honors.

Ham ilton earned a master’s degree from Central M issouri State University in 1967.

STAN McGARVEYH ead Footba ll C oach at W illiam Jew e ll CollegeHead footba ll coach at W illiam Jewell since 1978, Stan McGarvey was unanimously chosen as NA1A D is tric t 16 Coach of the Year in 1979 after his team finished its season as co-champions o f the Heart of America A th le tic Conference and was ranked No. 9 in the national D ivis ion II poll.

McGarvey, a 1973 graduate of W illiam Jewell, spent five years as an assistant coach at four d iffe ren t institu tions before being named head Cardinal coach at the .L ibe rty , Mo., school. He came to the post from the University of Tulsa, where he served as running back coach as well as coord ina tor of Tulsa’s h igh ly regarded recru iting program .

McGarvey earned a master’s degree in physical education in August 1975 at the University of Illinois-Champaign.

DR. kALPH M. TANNERPresident o f Baker Un ivers ityDr. Ralph M. Tanner has served as the President o f Baker U n ive rs ity since December, 1979.

Tanner received a Bache lo r o f A rts degree in h is to ry and po lit ic a l science, a Masters in H isto ry from B irm ingham -S ou the rn , and a Docto ra te in H isto ry from the Un ive rs ity o f A labama.

He jo in e d B irm ingham -S ou the rn in 1960 as assis tant pro fessor o f h is to ry and po lit ic a l science. D u ring the next 15 years he moved th rough the ranks o f adm iss ions to academ ic dean, execu tive vice pres iden t and presiden t. In 1975 he resigned adm in is tra tive du ties to accept a d is tingu ished pro fessorsh ip in the B irm ingham -S ou the rn facu lty . A m a jo r fund d rive in itia ted by the co llege under his d ire c to rsh ip raised more than $13 m iilio n in some 13 mon ths . The endowm en t increased from m ore than $6 m illio n to $14.5 m illio n du ring the same tim e .

R ichard is a 1963 gradua te o f W illiam Jewell College where he was the Card ina ls 'qua rte rback fo r three seasons. Fo llow ing successful coach ing stin ts at Odessa and M oberly MO h igh schoo ls R ichard served one season as a graduate assis tant coach at Centra l M issouri S tate before becom ing A th le tic D irec to r, Head Foo tba ll and T rack coach atH igh land C omm un ity Ju n io r College KS in 1975.

D u ring the 1977-78 season he was an assistant foo tb a ll coach at Illin o is S ta te Un ive rs ity and re tu rned to Kansas in 1978 as defensive coo rd in a to r at Co ffeyv ille . In two seasons at Co ffeyv ille R ichard ’s defensive un its were ranked th ird na tio na lly and won the uno ffic ia l na tiona l cham p ionsh ip in 1978.
