INTRODUCTIONCane Ridge Elementary School 8000 MLK BLVD Paris, Kentucky 40361859-987-2106___________________________Dana M. Hill Amy BurnellPrincipal Dean of Students

Greetings:

Welcome to Cane Ridge Elementary! How wonderful it is having you as a part of this outstanding staff. Personally, working with such a phenomenal group of students and staff is a blessing. Thanks for that blessing!

Please remember that the students are our number one reason for being here. Everything that we do is based on what is good for kids and how we can make students productive citizens when they leave us. With that in mind, let us strive daily to make the culture of Cane Ridge a positive inviting place for both children and adults. Research-based data tells us when children feel good about their environment learning is enhanced. Research also tells us that parent involvement increases a child’s educational success. These objectives steer us daily as plans are made for student success.

Cane Ridge’s educational program is based on the Kentucky Core Content and Kentucky’s Program of Studies. All instruction is focused on providing students with a base of knowledge that will allow them to perform well on the Kentucky Core Content Test and become productive citizens.

Please remember to strive to maintain a very orderly environment that will allow for maximum time on task. Hallways are always at zero level so that we do not interrupt the learning of other students. Being punctual is a major goal to allow all students to have optimal instructional time and to serve as role models in teaching this important trait.

Amy and I are always willing to help in any way to make Cane Ridge Elementary the best. Please do not hesitate to call upon us at anytime. Thank you for being great and for providing outstanding instruction to the Cane Ridge students.

Sincerely,Dana M. Hill Dana M. Hill

TIPS TO PROMOTE AND MAINTAINA POSITIVE SCHOOL CULTURE

-Our students are the reason that we are here and they are our number one concern. Making a child feel important and a part will lead him/her to do their best on all their work. Let us make sure they know they are each the most important part of our team.

-The Cane Ridge staff is a family and we respect each other. Being a family means that we can disagree. We compromise for the good of the whole and no matter what happens we stick together!!

-Please greet the students and adults each day with a smile and a friendly greeting. This will enhance the welcoming feeling that we are about here at Cane Ridge.

-We are a team and we support the team! We want to use words like we, us and ours instead of I, me and mine.

-Maintain and communicate high standards for all students. Challenge them every day.

-Be punctual. Wherever you are supposed to be … be there on time. Modeling this is the best way to transfer this to the students.

SCHOOL PLEDGEI promise as a proud cougar to be responsible, always try, do my best cooperate with others, treat everyone with respect including myself.

Anytime that a board is blank during the school year (which should be rare) an “under construction sign” should be placed on the board. No Christmas items should be up when students return from winter break.

HALLWAYSThe hallways of the building should always have student work displayed. This is to enhance the culture of the school and highlight the students’ work. The teacher name should be displayed above the student work. Research shows us that school culture and the way that children feel about their environment is the most important area in moving a school forward.

FRONT BULLETIN BOARD The front bulletin board is to be decorated at all times in order to have an inviting entrance into the building..

CELL PHONES – ADULTSStaff members with cell phones are to turn them off when the day starts which is before assembly ... then you should not have the phone on at all during the instructional day except while you are at recess in case of an emergency. CUSTODIAL INFORMATIONCLEANINGIn a quest to prepare students as responsible citizens, we feel it is very important for them to clean up their areas each day. This help is essential due to limited custodial staff. All chairs and other large items should be removed from the floor during your scheduled cleaning time. This will allow the custodial staff to clean the rooms efficiently.

BUS/RELEASE PROCEDURES

AFTERNOON RELEASEAn afternoon release plan (bus list) is to be located in each room by the door at all times. This allows subs to be able to make sure students get where they are supposed to be. Please post this by your door at all times.

Each class is to have an escort to the front of the building. Students are to be in a straight line and at level 0. Each team of teachers is to decide which adult will escort bus riders and which teachers will stay with walkers, car riders and cougar club members. When bringing students to the front of the building they are to make sure that they get to their destination. Children are to be supervised at all times.

TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURESBus, Car Rider, and Walker NotesTeachers should collect all transportation notes at the start of the school day. The office staff will create bus notes and copies will be placed in the bus notes record folder and the teacher’s pink folder.

If a change is made during the school day, the office staff will use the intercom to tell the teacher of the change and place a note in the teacher’s mailbox. Teachers must check their mailboxes at the end of the day to be sure all release notices have been picked up.

SCHOOL DISCIPLINE

BUS DISCIPLINE REFERRALBus referrals will be turned into the assistant principal. Copies of all referrals will be shared with classroom teachers. The following details the consequences for each referral per year.

Referral One: Parent Contact. Assistant Principal will decide an organized recess and/or silent lunch for each referral

Referral Two: Parent Conference to inform parent that next referral will result in five days loss of bus privileges.

Referral Three: Parent Contact. Five day loss of bus privileges. Referral Four: Parent Contact. Ten day loss of bus privileges Referral Five: Parent Contact. Loss of bus privileges for remainder of year.

*Loss of bus privileges start the day following parent contact. This allows parent time to arrange transportation. In addition, the loss of bus privileges on one bus constitutes loss of riding all buses. This does not include field trips.

CELL PHONES – STUDENTSStudents are not to have cell phones at any time. They are to be taken and sent to the office. Parents must come in to get the phones. Any time a cell phone is found an office referral must be made to the principals.

any child that the teacher feels needs services. These can be obtained from outside the office door of the counselor and should be turned into the counselor. In order for a child to receive counseling services on a regular basis a permission slip must be signed by a guardian. The counselor initiates the permission slip after receiving a referral.

CHARACTER EDUCATIONThe counselor manages the character education program for Cane Ridge. Each morning a character education message is presented at assembly. Classroom teachers are to include these topics in their instruction each week. Below you will find a schedule for the year.

HARRASSMENT TRAININGAll students are to be trained on harassment issues within the first 30 days of the school year. Each teacher is to document in his or her lesson plans that this instruction has taken place. Issues covered should be age appropriate. The school counselor will provide the training during her August lesson. The district recommendation is that primary students not be instructed on the sexual aspect of harassment but rather on basic harassment and safety issues.

The fifth grade teachers are to arrange with the district social worker within the first two weeks of school to provide this training. The social worker will discuss the sexual aspect of the harassment. When this training takes place the genders will be separated and the teachers will help monitor all of the students.

CRES FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER

29

Page 30: hand… · Web vie

The goal of the Cane Ridge Family Resource Center is to enhance students’ abilities to succeed in school by developing and maintaining partnerships that promote early learning, successful transition in school, academic achievement and personal well being.

The CRES’s Family Resource Center’s main office is located inside Cane Ridge Elementary. The center may be reached by calling (859) 987-2106 or by e-mailing [email protected] The family resource center can aid in helping make parent contacts. In addition they may be called upon to help with social as well as academic needs. The FRC believes in the following principles:

All children can learn – most at high levels. For all children to learn, barriers to learning must be removed. Parents must be a part of the development of services created to address academic, physical, social and emotional needs of students.

Children and youth must have a safe and nurturing atmosphere in order to meet the needs and achieve the goals of obtaining an education. The role of the center is to support and strengthen the families nurturing and problem solving ability by working as equal partners to remove identified barriers.

Community partnerships must be cultivated and established to be able to respond to the needs of the children and their families.

CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT

BELL RINGERSEach class will have a bell ringer to start each day. The bell ringer is to be related to common core and should be able to be done by the students independently. The bell ringer should be listed in the daily schedule. Teachers should give a flashback as their bell ringer at least one time per week.

Weekly bell ringers have been created that follow common core for all grades. Common math/reading bell ringers will be given at each of these grade levels. In addition, fourth grade will give common P/L and science bell ringers while fifth grade will give A/H and social studies common bell ringers weekly.

COMMON ASSESSMENTSCommon Assessments are used to assess learning that has taken place from curriculum that has been taught. These should occur naturally in the flow of the curriculum. Common Assessments are presented to the students in KPREP templates and include multiple choice as well as ORQ type assessment questions. The ORQ is scored with a specific rubric that is always shared with the students after the assessment has been graded. Teachers will receive a timeline that details testing windows. Teachers will analyze results using an analysis tool provided by the principal.

COMPUTER LAB INSTRUCTIONAdults are to be instructing or monitoring students during all computer lab time. This protects our students from undesirable sites. This is instructional time and not a time for adults to email or work on other non-instructional activities.

CONFERENCESTeachers are encouraged to hold parent conferences as often as possible or as needed in order to increase communication between the home and school. Conferences can be in person, on the phone or through email. In all cases we want to approach conferences in a positive manner while being very truthful in order for the parent to understand the true picture of their child’s performance. The purpose of the conference is to improve the overall educational progress of the student. Keeping this in mind, plus preparing adequately for the conference usually results in pleasant and productive meetings. All conferences should be documented.

Required Parent Conference30

Page 31: hand… · Web vie

Parents must be notified when a student is in danger of failing a subject, in danger of receiving an unsatisfactory conduct grade and/or prior to a student being referred for counseling. Parent contact can be by e-mail, by phone, or in person. A response from the parent is necessary.

DAILY ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOK FOR STUDENTSAll students will keep a daily notebook that will be signed by parents nightly and returned to school each morning. Teachers will check the assignment notebooks daily to make sure that this procedure is being followed. This process is to provide communication between school and home. Students in K-2 will maintain a folder while students in grades 3 – 5 will maintain a spiral assignment notebook.

DAILY REFLECTIONEach classroom will hold a reflection time to discuss the day’s events prior to the close of the day. This process is based on research of top ten schools and provides excellent feedback from the students that will aid the teacher in planning future instruction.

DAILY SCHEDULE POSTEDEach classroom teacher will display a schedule for the day with learning targets. This schedule will be reviewed at the start of each day in order to provide students with direction for the instructional day. Teachers should also go over the learning target at the beginning of the lesson.

This is an example of what the schedule should look like.MONDAY MAY 18, 2008

DARECane Ridge participates in the Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education Program (DARE) that is presented to our students by the Paris police department. This program provides instruction for all fifth graders once a week for a semester and once daily for a week in the primary grades.

ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAll fourth grade students attend an environmental day camp to enhance the science curriculum. This event is planned in cooperation with the 4-H agent. Volunteers are used to teach the different classes and any staff member that knows of someone that could enhance the camp should contact the principal.

EXTENDED SCHOOL SERVICES (ESS)Building administration will create a plan based on ESS funding for the year. The ESS program is under the direction of the assistant principal. ESS teachers must turn all time sheets and data forms into the assistant principal monthly.

31

Page 32: hand… · Web vie

FIELD DAYField day is held each spring to enhance the PE program.

FIELD TRIPSThe principal must approve all field trips and they must be tied to Kentucky’s Common Core Academic Standards. Each grade level can go on two field trips. All students must be permitted to go on all field trips. After approval, a bus request form should be picked up from the office filing cabinet, filled out and returned to the Dean of Students. Requests must be submitted 10 days before the trip. You will need to fill out one request for each bus needed.-All requests must include an attachment with a schedule for the day. -The teacher needs to post the field trip on the office calendar. If the trip interferes with lunch, the teacher needs to notify the cafeteria manager. In addition, the related arts teachers need to be informed by regular teachers if the trip affects their schedule. -Out of state field trips must have board approval. -Three lists must be provided with the names/phone numbers of students/adults on the trip: one for office, one for driver and one for the teacher.-Teachers need to take student emergency information on field trips.-Teachers need to discuss medication for students with the school nurse.

FLASHBACKSFlashbacks are used to check students’ understanding of skills that have been taught. These are created by the teachers and given once a week. The content assessed includes ELA, math, social studies, and science. The same flashback should be given to all students at each grade level.

HOMEWORK POLICYHomework assignments will be at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Homework is animportant part of the course of study to encourage independent work, good study habits and topractice and apply skills. The guideline for homework each night is 10 minutes times the grade level with kindergarten using ten minutes. Realizing that some children work faster than others do, homework should not exceed 30 minutes beyond this guideline. This does not include special projects, long-term assignments or the intermediate open response homework.

The make-up homework policy is as follows: The office will tell parents that we do not send homework on the first day a child is absent. When the child returns they will receive the homework. Should a child miss more than one day, the parent will be informed that the work will be available in the office after 4:00 PM on the second day. The office will contact the teacher by intercom and thru an email.

INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS/MOVIESMovies for entertainment are prohibited during the school day. Any video that is shown is to be approved through the principal. The following are suggestions that can be used for rewards: educational games, cooking, or physical activities that involve the teachers.A principal must approve any video that is shown. The form to have this done is in the black cabinet in the office. The superintendent is very clear on the fact that pleasure movies are not to be included in the instructional day.

K-PREP ACCOUNTABILITYAll teachers will be trained on the K-PREP accountability system.

LESSON PLANS 32

Page 33: hand… · Web vie

Complete lesson plans for the following week need to be displayed for administration during walk thrus. Below are the required content for each grade and components of your plans.K – 3rd grade – You must include the information below in your plans for reading/writing and math.4th grade – You must include the information below in your plans for reading/writing, math and science.5th grade - You must include the information below in your plans for reading/writing, math and social studies.

Bellringer/Flashback Standard# Learning Outcomes (learning target, objectives, what you want students to know at the end of the

lesson) Formative Assessment Learning Activities Differentiation

You will need to name your lesson plans like the following example:Grade, subject, unit, week # (Ex. 4th grade, math, fractions, week 9) or Grade, teacher name, week #...if you make plans for the full day (Ex. 4th grade, Rawlins, week 9)

Complete lesson plans for the following day are required to be on all teachers’ desks each afternoon before you leave school. Should you be absent, this will allow a sub to take over and run your class smoothly for a day.

LESSON PLANS FOR SUBSTITUTES

Please make sure that there is a sub folder at all times in order to help the subs run your class effectively. The sub folder is to be located in the back of your lesson plans so that a sub can easily find it. Please note a team member that can be of assistance to the sub. A copy of your discipline letter, accident reports and discipline referrals are to be included in the substitute folder. Also include a list of special needs students. For a checklist of items for the sub folder look on page 63 of this handbook.

Please make sure that your neighbor or team members know where all of these things are located. The special education teachers need to share this with each other. Special Education has a lot of different groups and we need to be able to help subs. Art, PE, and music need to coordinate this process among one another.

The administration should always be able to walk into a classroom and find complete lesson plans. There is nothing more embarrassing, as an administrator, than to walk into a room with a sub and find no plans. This makes our school look unprofessional … subs talk and we do not want this to negatively affect our image. Most importantly, we want the most effective instructional program at Cane Ridge.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTAll certified employees are required to participate in 24 hours of “highly qualified PD” each school year. This PD must be high quality as defined by the state department and related to the school’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan, the individual growth plan or the school PD plan. Each teacher will keep up with his or her 24 hours on a form that can be obtained from the office filing cabinet. This information needs to be forwarded to the school attendance clerk as soon as possible. Any school wide PD sign in sheet will be given to the attendance clerk by the principal. Any PD that is not part of the school’s 24 hours planned highly qualified PD must be approved by the principal prior to attending. All out of district PD requires forms to be filled out that can be obtained from the bookkeeper. In order to be reimbursed for travel, a PO must be created before and approved by the bookkeeper.

PROGRAM REVIEWSCommittees will be formed to follow the school timeline for program review completion in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Writing, K – 3 Program and Practical Living Career Studies. A timeline will be created including due dates for the components of the plan.

RESPONSE TO INTERVENTIONAll staff will be trained on the RTI plan for reading and math at the start of the school year.

STUDENT TECHNOLGY LEADERSHIP PROGRAMTeachers may enter projects they have completed with students using technology in the conference that is held each fall. These exhibits are to highlight projects that show how technology is integrated into the instructional program. The technology personnel will help to make sure that projects fit the criteria and all requirements are met. Contact the principal if you are interested in a part of this exciting program.

SUBSTITUTE FOLDER The following is a checklist of items to be included in all sub folders.

TEACHER/STAFF MENTORSIn order to help each new teacher have a successful year at Bourbon Central, we assign a veteran teacher to new teachers in the building. TWENTY FIRST CENTURYOur school is fortunate to have a 21st Century grant that allows us to provide additional after school enrichment for all students interested in participating. Staff interested in working the program should notify the principal.

WRITING PROGRAM –SCHOOL WIDEThe following is the plan for the school wide writing program to provide instruction at all grade levels that will enable our students to become proficient writers. All grade levels will incorporate writing instruction in all areas of the curriculum using each of the four types of writing: reflective, literary, personal and transactive. All grade levels will incorporate on demand writing instruction in all areas of the curriculum. This may change once we complete the new writing training on the 1tth.

District-Wide Common Writing Prompts

These are the district-wide writing prompts for grades K through 5. They will be given at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year. Students will have a choice between 3 different prompts OR the classroom teacher may choose to give a specific prompt to all students. Allow no more than 30 minutes for students to write. Have students write on a single sheet of paper, not in a journal.

Beginning of Year:

Directions for Administering:

For Grades 2 through 5, say this:

I will give you something to write about and I want you to write as much as you can. Think about everything you learned about writing last year, and use what you learned. This will not be graded; this is just for me to learn more about you. Just do your best. (Teacher may read the prompt/prompts aloud to the students. DO NOT model a response or tell them how much to write. Do not say or show anything else. If a student asks for help, just say “Do your best.”)

For kindergarten teachers and first grade teachers, say this:

I am going to ask you a question, and I want you to write about it. This will not be graded; this is just for me to learn more about you. Just do your best. (Teacher may read the prompt/prompts aloud to the students. DO NOT model a response or tell them how much to write. You may prompt your students to draw pictures if needed, especially for kindergarten. For example, if a student is just sitting there not responding, a teacher may whisper to the child, “Just draw about it.”)
