 This is service to others.  It is an important part of Sikh life.  Sewa are selfless acts.  Usually Sikhs perform sewa by cleaning the gurdwara (Sikh temple) or helping those less fortunate.  Giving money is also another form of sewa, the tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh, said that Sikh’s should give one tenth of their earnings to the poor.  Guru Nanak also said that you could also perform sewa by telling people about the goodness of God. This did not mean convincing them to be Sikhs.

These customs help strengthen the Sikh community and help Sikhs keep to the teachings of Guru Nanak

This is an open kitchen. It was set up by the third Guru, Guru

Amar Das who was inspired by Guru Nanaks teaching that everyone could eat together equally.

Men and women help prepare vegetarian food and then everyone sits on the floor and eats with each other.

There is a reason people eat sitting on the floor can you think of why?

This is a Sikh gathering. This is where Sikhs meet to express their

spirituality. This helps them keep a sense of

community. It also helps them to keep their faith.
