PREVENT, PROTECT, PREPARE
PLENARY OVERVIEW
The challenges affecting our national security are ever changing. The incessant rise of violent extremism across our region and globally is a cause for concern. The new tactics and strategies employed by terrorists are evolving and rapidly advancing in their sophistication. Our preparedness is more important now, than ever.
All levels of Government, Private Sector and the Public, are now being brought into the National Security debate, to address the key challenges facing us in 2017, such as policing and terrorism, violent extremism, cyber security, border security and immigration.
Technology will play an important role moving forward in how we tackle these challenges,, however there is a strong need for working with communities who are deeply affected by radicalisation. There is no elixir to solve these issues, and the Australian Security Summit 2017, has been designed to address these major concerns in the keynote plenary sessions, before drilling down into more specific areas of focus in the breakout streams and roundtable discussions.

BORDER SECURITYRecently we have seen devastating attacks on transport hubs such as Atatürk international airport in Turkey and attacks on Brussels airport and metro station.
Continuing to secure our borders, while enabling the seamless legitimate movement of people and goods, will be essential to ensuring Australia remains a prosperous society. The mass movement of people throughout the world also poses serious problems for security professionals – with borders being exploited by those seeking to do us harm.
This stream will look to address those challenges, and the tools and technologies to assist will also be discussed.
CYBER SECURITYWe have seen over he past year numerours cyber attacks, and more recently security breaches in the US, allegedly caused by Russia. Economies, governments and people depend on their cyber infrastructure. Communications, banking, personal information and documents are all saved electronically and transmitted online. As a result cyber infrastructure needs to be secure.
The number and sophistication of threats to our cyber infrastructure are increasing daily. Numerous reports cite the increasing number of security breaches, and newspapers regularly run stories of lost data files, hacked bank accounts and stolen identities.
The threat of cyber terrorism against individuals, business and governments is growing. This stream will look to address these challenges, and offer ways to mitigate the threats.

ISR & NATIONAL SECURITY TECHNOLOGIESNational Security Technologies and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance are critical to enhance our national security capabilities, to get real-time information to operatives in the field to make fast and effective decisions before threats happen.
This stream will look at how security organisations best utilise these capabilities along with advanced analytics, to mitigate threats.
SAFER COMMUNITIESCritical areas for national security and public safety are the policing and counter-terrorism preparations carried out by law enforcement, and government agencies.
Building safer communities requires all sectors of the community to work together in a coordinated and collaborative way; forming partnerships to promote safety, manage risk, increase the overall safety of its members and reduce the fear of harm.
This stream will look at the security challenges our communities face, and how they can be overcome.

PANEL DISCUSSION: WORKING TOGETHER TO PROTECT OUR CITIES, INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT NETWORKSThe national terrorism threat level for Australia is PROBABLE. Credible intelligence, assessed by our security agencies indicates that individuals or groups have developed both the intent and capability to conduct a terrorist attack in Australia. Identifying potential targets for terrorist attack can be a difficult task, but ensuring that we are prepared and resilient to any potential attack is essential to minimise the risk.
