WELCOME TO THE 2015 CAVELL LEITCH NEW ZEALAND JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL APRIL 7-12

Since 1999, the annual Cavell Leitch New Zealand Jazz & Blues Festival has provided Christchurch with an international standard music event that has become a favourite for artists and audiences alike. The festival is known for profiling some of New Zealand’s finest musicians and showcasing a selection of international artists. Artists who often work side by side, creating great music together, and enabling us to offer Christchurch a rich and varied festival programme.

The 2015 festival’s international artist line-up includes Hank Marvin, James Morrison, Hetty Kate, Fantine, Mary Coughlan, TJ Johnson, Daniel Weltlinger, Brenda Earle Stokes and Nick Hollamby. Our national musicians include: Nathan Haines, Ali Harper, The Troubles, Oval Office, Kevin Field, Tom Rainey, Malcolm McNeill, Naomi Fergusson and many more.

Festival shows will be staged in a variety of venues including the newly reopened ‘The Gym’ at The Arts Centre. ‘The Gym’ will be the host venue to the Dormer Jazz Cabaret Club – with shows each night from 7pm – as well as the festival’s lunchtime concert series. Charles Luney Auditorium will host Hank Marvin of The Shadows, The Bedford will host the fabulous Fantine with Oval Office, the CPIT MusicArts Doug Caldwell Auditorium has a full programme of concerts on offer while the Transitional Cathedral will provide a stunning location for four concerts featuring a variety of music from Nathan Haines, Mary Coughlan, Gypsy Swing and the Garden City Big Band tribute to one of our very best, Stu Buchanan.

Overwhelmed by the success of our Jazz Dine series, this year we’re offering three separate dinners in association with The Press, Black Estate Wines and The George. We’ll be matching great music with fantastic food and wine for three nights including the jazz flavours of New Orleans, New York and Europe.

The 2015 Cavell Leitch New Zealand Jazz & Blues Festival is made possible by the generosity of our sponsors, including our loyal naming partner Cavell Leitch, as well as The Press, Double Lux, Christchurch City Council, The Canterbury Community Trust, Dormer Construction, iSite, The Breeze, The Sound, The George, Wickliffe, CPIT MusicArts Black Estate and Pernod Ricard.

The sizzling sounds of swing.

Guitarist Hank Marvin has achieved legendary status the world over. From his early days with The Shadows, through to his forays into everything from rock‘n roll to swing and gypsy jazz, his technical skill, precision and rhythmic integrity brings us music that invades the soul. Marvin’s quartet ‘Hank Marvin Gypsy Jazz’ features virtuoso accordionist Nunzio Mondia, stand out rhythm guitarist Gary Taylor and guest bassist Robbie Pisano. Their debut album Django’s Castle is flying high in the USA Jazz charts.

“Marvin plays it as though it’s the only sound he’s been perfecting his entire life. Melodically and rhythmically the tunes and performances are sophisticated and sublime.”

PAUL FREEMAN POP CULTURE CLASSICS

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear this amazing ensemble and one of the world’s most renowned guitarists in an intimate setting.

James Morrison’s critically acclaimed A to Z of Jazz is a journey through the history of jazz with a snapshot of some of its most important people and moments. Featuring music from the greats including Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Miles Davis, you’ll be taken from Dixieland to Bebop, Blues to Birdland.

Besides the trumpet, this virtuoso multi-instrumentalist also plays trombone, euphonium, flugel horn, tuba, double bass and piano, sometimes at the same time! Joining Morrison for this performance is Melbourne based vocalist, Hetty Kate, a rising star on the international jazz scene, who has been described as:

“A charismatic and technically gifted vocalist whose gorgeous timbre carries echoes of Peggy Lee, June Christy and Julie London”

CHRIS MAY ALL ABOUT JAZZ (USA) 2011

Accompanied by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, this will be the jazz highlight of the year.

Sensational singer of Russian and Dominican descent, Australian-based Fantine, has a musical style that reflects her cultural diversity. Described as a fusion of jazz, indie and electro soul with a ‘swampy yet sultry’ voice, she has just released her new album Reservation for Two.

Joining Fantine, Oval Office features some of New Zealand’s finest musical talent playing an engaging mix of original funk, soul, jazz, blues and Latin music delivering hard hitting grooves, explosive horn lines and enticing, soulful vocals.

Richard Pickard (bass), Andy Genge (guitar), Gwyn Reynolds (saxophone), Daniel Kennedy (drums), Darren Pickering (keyboards), Scott Taitoko (trombone) and Fantine (vocals).

ALI HARPER GERSHWIN SONGBOOK

THE TROUBLES

George and Ira Gershwin will always be remembered as the songwriting team whose voice was synonymous with the sounds and style of the Jazz Age. Ali Harper selects her special favourites from their extensive song book including Fascinating Rhythm, S’Wonderful, I Loves You Porgy and Someone to Watch Over Me. Join this award winning songstress for a spell-binding night as she interprets the rhythm of the age through songs from musicals and films.

Ali Harper (vocals), Michael Lawrence (piano), Michael Story (bass) and Tim Sellars (drums).

“Ali Harper lights up every room she enters, owns every stage she steps upon and steals every heart that hears her sing.”NEW YORK 2013

The Troubles are one of this country’s most engaging and exciting jazz bands. From the coarse to the sublime, the emotive to the absurd, their music is inventive, passionate, honest, and wholly life affirming. Led by John Rae, a drummer and composer hailing from Edinburgh, their distinctive sound comes from a mix of string quartet and jazz trio. During 2014 the band performed to sell-out crowds at the Edinburgh International Jazz and Blues Festival and in 2015 they plan to take their unmistakably Kiwi sound around the world.

John Rae (drums), Patrick Bleakley (double bass), Reuben Derrick (saxophone), Daniel Weltlinger and Yoomia Sim (violins), Serenity Thurlow (viola) and Nicole Reddington (cello).

NICK HOLLAMBY ALL SINATRA

FANTINE THE JAZZ

Nick Hollamby is an established Australian jazz vocalist who has performed alongside ARIA award winning artists and international jazz heavyweights. He recently moved to Dunedin, to take up a position within the music department at the University of Otago, and in 2015 will head into the studio to record and release an album with Australian jazz pianist, Viv Middleton. Join Nick for an evening of classic Sinatra standards, as close as Christchurch audiences will get to hearing the voice of Ol’ Blue Eyes himself!

Nick Hollamby (vocals), Dave Spicer (piano), Mike Story (bass), Joe McCallum (drums).

Fantine is a unique talent with a musical style, described as a fusion of indie and electro soul, reflecting her cultural diversity, Russian and Dominican. She has graced stages as support for the likes of Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, Stevie Nicks and Erykah Badu and performed with Russian jazz saxophonist Igor Butman and his 16 piece Moscow Jazz Orchestra. Her breathtaking debut album, I am Fantine, was produced by Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

For her first Christchurch performance, she sings jazz standards accompanied by Richard Pickard (bass) and Kevin Field (piano).

The special connections Mary Coughlan has with Christchurch have resulted in her choosing the city as the place to premiere her new CD Alchemists Gold. Working with Erik Visser, her longtime musical collaborator, and songwriters Antoinette Hensey (The Beach) and Mark Nevin (Like a Leaf), she recorded the CD in Ireland and will release it in March with the first live performance here in April. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear first-hand the stories behind the songs as this queen of jazz and blues lays her soul bare.

MARY COUGHLAN THE WHOLE AFFAIR

GARDEN CITY BIG BAND TRIBUTE TO STU BUCHANAN

The Garden City Big Band has been playing around Christchurch for over 20 years. The 17 piece band is made up of some of the best local musicians and vocalists performing everything from classic swing and dance music from the Big Band Era through to contemporary big band sounds. In this tribute to Stu Buchanan, who was the musical director and driving force behind the band until recently, they will play a special selection of his original compositions including tunes such as Urban Marae and The Octagon Awaits You.

Over 25 years of an extraordinary career performing and recording, Mary Coughlan has drawn from her legendary heroes; Billie Holliday, Peggy Lee, Van Morrison and Edith Piaf. When she puts her own interpretation on their soulful wails, husky flirtations, teary outpourings or defiant chanteusery, she makes every song her own without any doubt. In this concert, singing the best from her many albums, including Ancient Rain, Love Will Tear Us Apart and God Bless the Child, she inhabits every song from jazz ditties to deep blues showing why she is known as Irish musical royalty. The Whole Affair is just that - the very best of Mary Coughlan.

Harry Harrison (guitar), Tom Rainey (piano), Mike Story (bass) and Mary Coughlan (vocals).
