Sunday 5 July 2015Portside, Maryborough

Follow the trail to unlock magical links between Maryborough and the

Poppins novels, discover quirky Mary Poppins

facts, and learn about the fascinating life of author

Pamela Travers.

Look for the giant alphabet letters* and find the ones marked with a gold star (seven in total) to work out the secret code word. Once you have the code, fill in an entry form at the main information tent to win a great prize.

2 Your imagination is your only limit at the ‘Feed the Birds’ Clayplay & NEW Flying Origami activities at Bazil Grumble’s exciting multi-arts workshops. The workshop is inspired by one of the more popular scenes from the Mary Poppins Book and movie, featuring the 'bird lady' who feeds the birds on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral. *o

Mar Pop ins Treas re Trail

Mar Pop ins Treas re Trail

1 Mary Poppins always liked to look her

best. Sometimes you could even catch

her primping in the shop windows

as she walked by. If you would like to

look your best, head over to the ladies

at the Lindy Charm School for a

vintage style makeover. *l

3 Find Queens Park’s amazing Banyan Tree, which is one of the largest and oldest in Australia, and join in the fun of the Little Street Circus Troupe's drop-in style circus activities and tie dyeing fun. One of Travers' most mythical stories involves a huge circus in the sky in her second novel, Mary Poppins Comes Back. *e

5 According to Mary Poppins, anything can happen if you just imagine. Let your creativity loose at the Puppet Hut workshop in the CWA Hall, and see a wonderful collection of classic marionettes, including a wonderfully designed Mary Poppins marionette. *w

4Lots of music can usually be heard here

at the Excelsior Band Hall when they're

rehearsing, but today step inside to

create your own Mary Poppins character

costume pieces. With six to choose from,

feel a part of the festival with your own

hat or penguin mask. *y

7 Pamela Travers wrote a whole series of books about the mysterious flyingnannywhomakesahabitofmysteriouslyflyinginandoutofthelives of the Banks’ children. Pop into the Customs House Museum and have somefunflyinginandoutofthedressup and photo booth area. *h

8 In Maryborough before there was a townclock,acannonwasfiredat1pmevery day so people could set their clocks. The original time cannon is located in the Bond Store Museum. The Bond Store has recently also had a new refurbishment so why not go and check it out. *g

9Take a ride on another famous Mary.

The Mary Ann is a working replica of

Queensland’sfirststeamengine,built

in Maryborough in 1873. *d

11 Gatakers Artspace would have been the ideal place for Bert to hang his paintings and display all his artwork, instead of on the park fences and along Cherry Tree Lane. Always full of wonder, music and refreshments (both alcoholic and not), walk up the lane to Gatakers toot sweet! *j

12 Have you tasted the delights at A Spoonful of Sugar Café? Situated next to the former bank building where Travers was born in the upstairs bedroom of the manager’s residence in 1899, take some time away from the festival hub to recharge here. *;

6Admiral Boom would love browsing in

the Military & Colonial Museum on

Wharf Street with all the exhibits and

historical artefacts and ornaments on

display. *k

10 What’s Mary Poppins without pavement art? Go down to the Parklands to see amazing images by local artist Willy Paes, inspired by Pamela Travers' stories. Join in with Willy and his team and create your own masterpiece. *i

13 Find the Merchandise Stand and take

some of the Mary Poppins magic home

with you in the form of souvenirs: tea

towels, umbrellas, books, magic carpet

bags… *

14 Lastly ... When was the last time you visited the Mary Poppins bronze statue? Have your photo taken or even takeaselfiewithourfamousfigure. This life size structure is based on the illustrations from the original Mary Poppins book, written in 1934. *2)
