Therearethreedifferentwaysinwhichinfectionscantriggerautoimmunedisease.Oneofthefirstwaysisknownasmolecularmimicrywhenaninfectiousagentlookslikethethyroidgland.Whenevertheimmunesystemisfightingthatinfection,itlooksforacertainproteinsequence.Wheneveritseesthatproteinsequence,itwillattack.Insomecases,someinfectionslikeborrelia,yersinia,othertypesofinfections,H.pylori,havedifferentproteinsequencesonthemthatlooklikethethyroidgland.Inthatcase,it'sacaseofamistakenidentitybecausetheimmunesystemtriestogoafteraninfectionandalsogoesafterwhateverlooksliketheinfection.
