The importance of preserving our local heritage is highly valued by the City of Greater Geraldton. Our region is steeped in history, from the recognition of Aboriginal stories and culture, to the sagas of shipwrecks and early exploration. Themes of colonial expansion, migration, the war years, and the development of a progressive port and district, are all exciting historical journeys awaiting your discovery.
The Geraldton Regional Library provides a gateway to these stories which make up the vibrant heritage of our region. The Local Studies Collection includes books, photographs, oral history recordings, newspapers, maps, cemetery indexes and other ephemera items.
The City also proudly supports three local community-run museums, namely the Greenough Museum and Gardens, the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage Museum and the Walkaway Station Museum. Each Museum offers a unique window into the past, with fascinating displays, exhibits and memorabilia which will inspire and enthral.
What do the Greenough Museum and Gardens and the National Gallery of Australia have in common? They both have in their collections a sketch by Tom Rand of the disastrous flood that occurred at Greenough in 1888.
