Victoria is the most culturally diverse state in Australia, with almost a quarter of its people born overseas, adding to and enriching the social landscape of our indigenous

and long-term resident population. Victorians come from over 230 countries, speak at least 200 languages and follow more than 120 different faiths.

The Carers Group set up by Denise Femino two years ago continues to meet monthly, with some participants who care for folk attending Positive Living Groups, and others who share the same need for respite and support.

Denise has organized a comprehensive CARERS EXPO, which will take place in the church hall adjoining UCEBC.

Representatives from a large number of organizations will attend, offering a broad range of information to support and assist carers and care recipients, and connect them to services relevant to their needs. Also available - a free hearing test facility.

Several workshops and informative presentations have been arranged where speakers will share their knowledge.

Refreshments during the day and a barbecue lunch will be provided free of charge.

CONNECTING CARERS

EXPO Monday - OCTOBER 20th

10.30am - 6.00pm

CONNECTING CARERS EXPO will be of interest to those currently in a carer role or who may be so

in future, as well as service providers and some care recipients.

ANNUAL PRESENTATION EVENING Wednesday 22nd October - 7.30pm

We are very pleased to welcome as our guest speaker at the Annual Presentation Evening a former much-loved staff member and volun-teer at the Centre - Norma Pearce AM.

After a career as a Teacher Librarian at Yooralla, Norma moved into various commu-nity roles, including as a foundation member of Riding for the Disabled, eventually becom-ing Executive Director of the international body. Several years at a residential school for disadvantaged youth in England followed.

Two years ago Norma moved to the town of Tolmie in Victoria, with her brother Keith who is also well-known at the Centre.

It was for her enthusiastic involvement with the community there and in nearby Mansfield, together with her service to Riding for the Disabled, that she was awarded an AM in the Australia Day honours this year.

We look forward to hearing of Norma’s experiences.

DECEMBER

IS CHRISTMAS HAMPER TIME

Planning, Collecting, Buying.

Folding and decorating boxes.

Packing the boxes and bags with food, treats and presents -

each one matched to a person known to us.

Our Special Gifts For Special People

Our regular readers will be familiar with the annual task we undertake to make Christmas a little happier for the folk who, through the year, have come through our doors needing practical assistance. A great deal of time and effort is spent by a dedicated team to make this happen, because we believe

that it is worth personalizing the hampers, rather than just offering a voucher.

The boxes and bags are labelled with details of who will be receiving them – people on their own, families, children of all ages – and the contents chosen to fit the profiles.

It is not a Christmas ‘handout’, rather a collection of food and gifts given in friendship.

We receive very welcome donations of food, toys and gifts. But in order to fill the gaps in nearly 200 hampers, there will be visits to the supermarkets with a long list of groceries —

and loading up several trailer-loads comes at a considerable cost.

So with this Newsletter, we are asking for our supporters to direct your donations to the hampers. In doing so you are helping us make Christmas a happier time for the people who need to know we care.

Christmas is the time when people are asked to respond to many appeals.

At UCEBC our focus will be on our Hamper Project.

Over the years we have received wonderful support,

and we will be grateful for your continuing assistance to enable us to fill the empty boxes.
