e Bradley BulletinNews and notes for our friends and supporters.

For Joseph L. Dowling, Jr., MD, and his wife, Sally

Dowling, Esq., family is everything. The couple

met when Sally was the roommate of Joe’s sister

at Wellesley College. Fifty-four years of marriage, four

children and 13 grandchildren later, Sally remarks, “We’re

very lucky.”

Joe, a Brown University and Tufts University School of

Medicine graduate, founded Rhode Island Eye Institute

in 1957. When their four children were school-age, Sally

went back to school at Northeastern University School of

Law, receiving her degree in 1977. She later became the fi rst

female lawyer and partner at Adler Pollock & Sheehan P.C.

in Providence.

It was an invitation to Bravo Bradley back in 2012 by Joe’s

tennis partner and longtime Bradley advocate David Brown

that fi rst gave the couple a look inside Bradley. What they

learned has kept them actively involved ever since. Joe and

Sally are now annual Bravo Bradley attendees and raise their

paddle high to support the fund-a-need and auction.

“In my opinion, Bradley is the most prestigious hospital

in Rhode Island,” explains Joe. “They get referrals from all

over the world and provide care that patients can’t receive

anywhere else.”

Committed to the hospital’s innovative care, Joe joined the

Bradley Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees in late 2012.

He also serves on the boards of Common Cause Rhode

Island, Tides Family Services, Friends of South Ferry Church

and Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. Sally is chair of

the Rhode Island Judicial Nominating Commission.

The couple’s mutual hobby is theater. They have been

involved with Trinity Repertory Company since 1965 and are

among the 2017 Pell Award honorees for their service and

advocacy for the arts. While Bradley is a detour from their

involvement in the arts, they are proud of the work Bradley

does for its patients and families.

Sally often attends events with Joe and says, “There is always

an educational part to the meetings that I enjoy. Bradley’s

success stories are very compelling as they show what a

difference the hospital makes for patients.”

Joe has also referred numerous families to Bradley for care

and has introduced many close friends to the hospital,

including Beazie the service dog. Beazie came along with his

owners for a tour of Bradley Hospital, and the patients fell in

love with him. Now, he visits patients weekly!

“The Dowlings’ dedication to supporting the hospital

and spreading the word about our mission and work is

wonderfully uplifting, and it means so much to all of us that

they are part of the Bradley Hospital family,” says Bradley

Hospital President Daniel J. Wall.

iFriend Teaches Valuable Social Skills

It’s painful to even contemplate. Your child comes home alone every day after school. He’s never had a play date or

even been invited to a birthday party. Lonely beyond all measure, you know what is going on with him isn’t mere social

awkwardness. As a parent, your child’s social isolation leaves you feeling helpless.

iFriend is an outpatient group therapy program at Bradley Hospital, designed to enhance social skills in children ages 8 to 11. The 12-week program focuses on emotion regulation, reading social cues, and improving conversation and play skills, while providing opportunities to practice for children and their parents.

“The parent group is a unique aspect of this program,” explains group leader and Bradley staff psychologist Caley Arzamarski, PhD. “Parents are taught the same skills to reinforce their child’s skills across home and community. Practicing how to engage with peers outside of group is just as important as learning the skills in group.”

Meeting other children and parents who are experiencing similar challenges also helps to normalize their struggles. Families, teachers, and clinicians often begin to see positive changes in the children’s social skills, sense of belonging, and self-confi dence after several weeks.

“Even for those who were hesitant initially, we often hear kids asking if the program can continue after our last session. We hope this group brings a sense of relief and hope to children and families, while showing them they can learn skills to better engage with others,” says Dr. Arzamarski.

NIH Awards Bradley Hospital $2.3 Million for Irritability Study

Most children get grumpy now and then for many reasons, including being overtired, stressed or feeling sick. Some

kids, though, have severe irritability and may be prone to frequent or intense temper tantrums, verbal outbursts

or physical aggression. Their irritability may have no clear trigger or may be associated with other mental health

problems.

“Irritability is the most common reason children are brought for psychiatric evaluations,” says Daniel P. Dickstein, MD, director of Bradley Hospital’s Pediatric Mood, Imaging and NeuroDevelopment (Pedi-MIND) Program.

Defi ned as the symptoms resulting from frustration and blocked goal attainment, irritability is a diagnostic criterion for a number of psychiatric conditions, including bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety. However, there is no scan, questionnaire or biomarker to help doctors determine exactly which disorder a child with irritability may have and, therefore, the best way to treat it.

Dr. Dickstein aims to change that. Supported by a $2.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, he is leading a groundbreaking study to identify the bio-behavioral mechanisms of irritability that could be used for earlier, more specifi c diagnosis and treatment of children with disorders involving irritability.

Researchers from Brown University, Butler Hospital and the National Institute of Mental Health are collaborating with Bradley Hospital on this project.

“It’s a great team,” says Dr. Dickstein, “And we are grateful to the extended team – the kids and parents who are participating, as well as our partners in philanthropy. This study can lead to breakthroughs in child mental health akin to the transformation in survival of childhood leukemia. The only way to get there is with the whole team.”
