SRI VYASARAJA TIRTHARU(1478 - 1539)

N.Raghothaman,35/2, Arimuthu Achari Street,

Triplicane, Chennai-5

Sri Vyasaraja was born in a village Bannur nearMysore in 1460. He was 6th (last) child to his parents. His Poorva-Ashrama name was Yatiraja. He was bornby the special grace of Abbur Sri Brahmanya Tirtha.(Abbur is near Chenna-patna in Karnataka.) HisUpanayana was performed in his 5th year. As alreadyagreed, the parents gave the child Yatiraja to SriBrahmanya Tirtha. Sri Swamiji was pleased with thischild’s excellent intelligence, Guru Bhakti andVairagya and was convinced that the child was bornfor propagating Madhwa Shastra.

But Yatiraja was playful due to his age. He couldnot adjust himself to the Mutt’s rules and regulations. One day he left the Mutt without anybody’s notice. He walked long distance, got tired and slept undera tree. He had a divine dream. The Lord appearedin his dream and advised him:- “Yatiraja, you willhave good fortune in your life. Go back to the Muttwithout any worry. Sri Brahmanya Tirtha will receiveyou with great affection”. He woke up from the sleepand returned to the Mutt with great enthusiasm. SriSwamiji welcomed him with loving words and acceptedthe child Yatiraja with smiling face.

SANYASA ASHRAMA

After a few months, Sri Swamiji initiated Yatirajainto Sanyasa Ashrama at the age of 16. He was named“Sri Vyasa Tirtha” in the Sanyasa Peeta.

STUDY IN KANCHIPURAM

Sri Brahmanya Tirtha was then very old andafter a very few years he entered Brindavana in Abbur. In those days, (in 15th century), Kanchipuram wasone of the great education centres in South India. SriVyasa Tirtha studied Advaita, Visishta-dwaita, Bhaattasystems of schools in Kanchipuram, direct under therespective Pandits. In those days, Kanchi was a famouscentre, where all the Top - Scholars in various shastrascould be found in one place. That was the reasonwhy Vyasaraja came to Kanchi from Karnataka. Thesestudies helped and benefitted him in later years whilewriting great works like “Vyasa-Traya”.

VYASA-YOGI-CHARITAM

We get all these and further details of Sri VyasaTirtha in the book called “Vyasa-yogi-charitam”,written by Somanatha Kavi. Somanatha Kavi wasan Advaita Pandit and contemporary of Sri VyasaTirtha. He admired Sri Vyasa Tirtha’s greatness.

STUDY IN MULUBAGAL

After studying all the above said schools of sys-tems in Kanchipuram, Sri Vyasa Tirtha came toMulubagal (in Karnataka) and learnt all the MadhwaShastras under Sri Sripadaraja Swamiji. Sri VyasaTirtha was then 25 or 26. Mulubagal was also aneducation centre. Thus Sri Brahmanya Tirtha wasAshrama-Guru and Sripadaraja was the Vidya Guruto Sri Vyasaraja.

ADMIRED BY AN ADVAITA PANDIT

Pandits from different far off places used to cometo Mulubagal. A North Indian Pandit, “Paksha-dara-mishra” who was well versed in Tarka Shastra cameto Mulubagal. He was an elderly person. He hadconversation with the young Sri Vyasa Tirtha onTarka Shastra. He was very much delighted to seeSri Vyasa Tirtha’s in-depth knowledge in TarkaShastra. in such a young age. The discussion con-tinued next day also.

In Tarka Shastra, “Navya-Nyaya” is a new approach. It is very difficult. Sri Vyasa Tirtha clearly debated theintricacies of this approach. Paksha-dara-mishra enjoyedthe scholarly interaction with Sri Vyasa Tirtha. He wasover joyed when Sri Vyasa Tirtha playfully disclosed afew subtle points which Pandits keep very secret.

Sri Vyasa Tirtha went to the extent that he toldPaksha-dara-mishra that he had a few more supersecrets, than what he had disclosed already. On this,Paksha-dara-mishra could no more control his joy.He praised Sri Vyasa Tirtha in these words. This ispopular among pandits even today.

Chandra-giri King Salva Narasimha (in VijayanagaraSamrajya) needed the help of Sri Sripadaraja. SriSripadaraja sent his sishya Sri Vyasa Tirtha to helpthe King Salva Narasimha. Mulubagal and Chandra-giri were neighbour Kingdom in those days.

Once during the period of King SalvaNarasimhan, there was nobody in the Archaka familiesfor doing Pooja at Tirumala Temple in Tirupati. Onlya small boy was there. The boy had to learn all thePooja, Utsava procedures based on VaikhaanasaAagama. The King requested Sri Vyasa Tirtha to helpfor the Pooja. Sri Swamiji accepted this request andperformed Pooja to the Lord Sri Venkateswara for12 years (1486 - 1498). After the boy attained properage and got familiar with the Pooja procedures, SriVyasa Tirtha handed over the responsibility to him.As a gesture of Sri Vyasa Tirtha’s timely service, theSwamijis of Sri Vyasaraja Mutt have special privi-leges at Tirumala temple even today.

RAJA GURU IN VIJAYANAGARA SAMRAJYA

After the period of the King Salva Narasimha, his successors too were in need of Sri Vyasa Tirtha.Such was the help of Sri Swamiji to the Kingdom.Sri Swamiji was considered as a Raja Guru inVijayanagara Samrajya.

VEERA-NARASIMHA PERIOD (1498 - 1509)

idols all over the kingdom in various places of theKingdom. He installed 732 idols and arranged forproper Pooja in all the places. At first, he installed“Yantro-ddaraka Hanuman” at Hampi (importantcentre in Vijayanagara Kingdom) and composed themost powerful “Yantro-ddaraka Hanumad Stotra”.

The famous “Vyasa-Traya” (Tatparya Chandrika,Nyaya-mruta, Tarka Taandava) were also writtenduring this period, says Dr. B.N.K. Sharma.

KRISHNA-DEVARAYA PERIOD (1509 - 1530)

After Veera-Narasimha, the famous KingKrishnadevaraya adorned the throne of VijayanagaraKingdom. His period:– 21 years (1509 to 1530). Asper the Jyotisha Shastra, the King Krishnadevarayahad to face Kuhu Yoga. When the planets join in acertain combination on a particular day, such aconjunction is called “Kuhu Yoga” which indicateddanger to the King. At that critical time, Sri VyasaTirtha by his spiritual Power, saved the King’s life.

Sri Swamiji himself occupied the Throne duringthe said Kuhu-Yoga hour. The predicted danger didappear in the form of a serpent approaching towardsthe throne. Sri Swamiji rolled up his hand-vastralike a ball, and threw it in front of the serpent tobite. As the reptile bit the ball it caught fire andthe serpent disappeared from the scene. The Kuhu-Yoga period was over by this time and Sri Vyasa Tirthavacated the throne and asked the King to resumehis Royal duties without fear any more. From thenonwards, Swamiji became “Sri Vyasa-Raja Tirtha”.

The boy can do this Homa with booksinitially. This should be achieved by the time hecompletes P.U.C or Plus two. At school he shouldbe the team leader. At home, he is a Pandit. Bothachieved with no distrubance to his school studies.

The Two Main Lessons

(1) Punya-h Vaachana Mantras and

(2) Agni-Mukha Mantras

If boys become proficient in the above saidtwo items, they will be able to perform any Homa. These two are common in all our domestic functions, such as Aa-yush-Homa etc. But the problem is,that it is a Himalayan task to make boys sitand learn this with interest and enthusiasm.

Yada - vattu - AgeThey are all grown up boys at this stage;

neither so innocent, nor so matured. (Yada-vattuin Kannada). Not so amenable; not so readily willingto obey, especially when the subject involves someextra mental excercise. If you compel them, it willnot work. If you cajole them all the time, thespirit will go away after 15 minutes. It will endonly in too much of laughter. If there is no seriousnessin the class, the teacher will look at me indicatinghe got dejected. That should not happen. You willhave to emaginatively and tactfully handle thisclass

You will have to inspire the boys in the rightway and create interest and enthusiam in theminds of these adolescent boys.

FIRST PRIZE Rs. 3000This year we have announced a competiion

scheme for these boys. The top five vidyarthis inthese subjects will get Rs. 3000 each. Next fiveRs. 2000/- each and 3rd prize Rs. 1000/- for tenboys. You can imagine the Vedic educational valueof such boys who have learnt the Veda Vidyaso far taught to them. They are Kula-Dhana orKula Deepas in their families. If it works, itis all due to the Grace of God and Guru. It isonly the Divine Grace that is at work.

When the boy becomes a Grihastha, he needsa minimum Vedic knowledge. We should give himthis knowledge, if we expect him to practise hisKula-Dharma at home.
