erfährt man in diesem Abschnitt, dass Kreidler in einem Telegramm an das Stuttgar-ter Kultusministerium seine Bereitschaft signalisiert hat, das Uhrenmuseum dochnicht «en detail» durch das eidgenössische Auktionshaus Ineichen unter den Ham-mer bringen zu lassen, sondern «en bloc» an das Land Baden-Württemberg zu ver-äussern. Begründung: die kulturhistorisch bedeutsame Kollektion würde in ihrerGesamtheit der Ö f f ent l ichkeit e rhalten b leiben. A l s P reisvorstellung nannteKienzle nun bloss 8,5 Millionen DM plus Mehrwertsteuer.Am 13. August 1975 wurden 12 der teuersten Uhren aus dem Kienzle-Museum in dieSchweiz zur Restauration eingeführt, mit der Absicht, dieselben nach den Wieder-instandstellungsarbeiten für die Auktion bereitzustellen.In dieser Zeit häuften sich die täglichen Presse- und Radiomeldungen, die teilswidersprüchliche Aussagen machten. Aus den mannigfaltigen Ausschnitten undHeadlines hier einige chronologisch aufgeführte Zitate:— 20.Juni 1975 (Badische Zeitung Freiburg) : «Verkauf oder Versteigerung» -

«Über das Kienzle-Uhrenmuseum ist noch nicht entschieden, es werden hier dreiMöglichkeiten zur Zeit diskutiert: a ) entweder wird die Sammlung vom LandBaden-Württemberg gekauft, b ) oder ein pr ivater Kunde kommt zum Z ug ,c) ergibt sich weder die eine noch die andere Lösung, wird das Museum in Zürichversteigert.»

Hier ist auch interessant zu lesen, dass im Zusammenhang mit den Verhandlungenzwischen dem Land und dem Kienzle-Uhrenmuseum die Verkaufsgespräche insStocken geraten sind, «weil einigen Gutachtern der Eintritt zum Werk bislang ver-

Das Geschäft wird in diesem Artikel «als seltsam» bezeichnet, bei dem das Land aufeine gewiefte Taktik eines Unternehmens hereingefallen zu sein scheint.— 23. August 1975(Stuttgarter Zeitung) Headline: «Hat Kienzle das Land herein-

gelegt?» Massive Vorwürfe der SPD: «Ist die Baden-Württembergische Landes-regierung auf e ine gewiefte Taktik des Schwenninger UhrenunternehmensKienzle hereingefallen, hat die Firma abgewartet, bis sie vom Land Millionenkassiert hatte, und erstdann geschäftstüchtig 250 Beschäftigte entlassen.» DieseVermutung äusserte die SPD-Landtagsfraktion.

— Im gleichen Tenor am 29.August 1975 (Die Welt) Headline: «Hick-Hack umKienzle-Uhrenmuseum.» Auszug: «Seltsames Geschäft und Reinfall auf d iegewiefte Taktik eines Unternehmens.»

Diese wenig schmeichelhaften Attr ibute bekam die christdemokratische Landes-regierung Baden-Württemberg von der oppositionellen SPD zu hören, und auch derBund der Steuerzahler hielt mit seiner Kri tik nicht hinter dem Berg, dass diesesstaatliche Geschäft nicht Schule machen sollte. Nach Aussage der Firmenleitung«hat die SPD-Fraktion unberechtigterweise die Entlassungen mit dem Verkauf derUhrensammlung verknüpft und die Zeitung hat diese Hinweise aufgenommen, ohnezu recherchieren. Tatsache ist, dass die Entlassungen unabhängig vom Verkauf derUhrensammlung notwendig und schon vor dem Verkauf des Museums beschlossen

Die Auktionskataloge waren fertiggestellt, aber wie bereits erwähnt, hatte das LandBaden-Württemberg das Vorkaufsrecht bis zum Stichtag 20. August 1975. Ein Vor-kaufsrecht, das tatsächlich im allerletzten Moment wahrgenommen wurde.Im nachhinein ist doch befriedigend festzustellen, dass nach all den unerfreulichen,teils spekulativen, teils aber auch provokativen Meldungen die Sammlung derÖffentlichkeit erhalten geblieben ist. Der grössere Teil der Sammlung befindet sichheute in Furtwangen im Uhrenmuseum, der restliche Teil im Heimatmuseum inVillingen-Schwenningen.Die 488 bedeutendsten Objekte wurden für die Spezialauktion vom 25./26. Septem-ber 1975 ausgesucht. Der vorliegende Katalog ist die einzige Dokumentation dieserArt für die heute aufgeteilte Sammlung. Er wurde in einer einmaligen Auflage vonnur 4800 Exemplaren gebunden, davon 4500 in Leinen und 300 numerierte Luxus-exemplare in Leder. Zusätzlich mit diesem kurzen Vorwort und einigen Auszügenausgerüstet, wurde er in seiner Originalform als «Auktionskatalog für die Samm-lung, die nicht zur Versteigerung kam» belassen. Erwähnenswert ist vielleicht noch,dass der im Umfang wesentlich kleinere, ohne Preise ausgerüstete Dokumentations-katalog an einer Versteigerung den stolzen Preis von SFr.700.— plus Aufgelderzielte, was deutlich macht, wie stark — aber auch wie verbreitet — das Interesse derSammler für dieses Dokument ist.

Preface

The present catalogue in book form may for two reasons be considered unique. Firstin view of the quality of the collection which for years was open to the public in amuseum, but does no longer exist in its entirety. And second due to the history inconnection with the collection which was to be, but in the end was not auctioned.This book is a record of the historical events, documented by the various pressreports cited and partly reproduced.

It all started in May 1974 in a small Cafe in the center of Zurich where the firstmeeting with the sellers of the collection took place. For the first time I was informedabout the intended sale of the entire museum, needless to say unter the strictestconfidence. In June of the same year I received an invitation to visit the museum anda month later the first personal contact took place with the owner of the collection,Mr. A. Kreidler, at his private home. Several more such visits were to follow.In these several meetings two possibilities for the sale were worked out. Variation Aenvisaged a sale "en bloc" to a wealthy client. For this purpose the AuctionhousePeter Ineichen was commissioned to establish a documentation catalogue of themost important pieces without prices in an edition of but 300 copies. Thesecatalogues were sent to potential clients as weil as institutions which could beassumed to dispose of the necessary capital of about 12 million DM — the sumestimated in an expertise on the value of the museum pieces. This took into accountthe cultural and art historical value of the objects, the rarity and singularity of thiscomprehensive collection, as weil as the technical distinctiveness of some of thepieces, such as rare movements, calendar and astronomie indications, automatonfigures, as weil as dated and signed pieces of wellknown and sought-after masters,which were considered mile-stones of watchmaking history in the opinion ofhistorians and scholars. The Court of Persia was amongst those approached and thecourteous answer, in the sense that at the moment it was not interested, is illustratedin the catalogue.Simultaneously and parallel with these efforts for a sale "en bloc" an auction termhad to be envisaged and the auction prepared. Variation B: in case the "en bloc" salecould not be realized by March 1975 the auction sale would take place in Zurich inSeptember. It goes without saying that all these efforts had to be conducted underthe strictest secrecy. Zurich fixed the date for the auction for September 25/26, butthe State of Baden-Württemberg had a right of pre-emption till August 20. Kienzledemanded 12 million DM whilst the State offered only 9. 5 million.Although all these proceedings took place behind locked doors and the KienzleMuseum meanwhile was barred to the public the news gradually got out and wasplayed up in wanton sensationalism, so that "Die Welt" of 29.8.75 spoke of an"hullabaloo" degenerating more and more into political wire-pulling.

On August 20 banner-heads in the press announced "Kienzle's hour tolls", followedby detailed particulars of catalogue editions, auction date and location Zurich. Atthe same time it was mooted that Kreidler had sent a telegram to the StuttgarterKultusministerium signalling his readiness not to let the collection come under thehammer piece-meal through the Aukt ionshaus Ineichen, but rather to seil it "enbloc" to the State of Baden-Württemberg . The reason: in this way the historicallysignificant collection would remain open to the public in its entirety. Kreidler nowmentioned a reduced price of 8.5 million DM plus value-added tax.

— August 23, 1975 (Schwarzwald-Bote): "Curious transaction / Schieler criticizespurchase of watch collection."

This article called the transaction "curious" and insinuates that the State seemed tohave fallen for the cunning tactics of a company.

— August 23, 1975 (Stuttgarter Zeitung) Headline: "Is Kienzle deceiving theState?" Massive accusations by SPD: "Did the Government of Baden-Württem-berg fall for the cunning tactics of the Schwenningen watchmakers Kienzle, didthe company wait till it had cashed millions from the State and then smartly sacked250 employees." This conjecture was mentioned by the SPD-fraction of the pro-vincial parliament.— In the same tenor on August 29, 1975(Die Welt) Headline: "Hullabaloo aboutthe Kienzle Watch Museum." Excerpt: "Cur ious transactions and deceptivetactics of a company."

These derogatory attributes were heaped onto the Christian-Democratic Govern-ment of Baden-Württemberg by the opposition SPD. Nor did the Association ofTaxpayers stand back with their criticism. They categorically demanded that suchdubious deals should not recur. The firm's management countered "the SPD-fractionunwarrantably linked the staff dismissals with the sale of the watch collection and thenewspapers took up these allusions without investigating. In actual fact these dismis-sals were inevitable independently of the sale of the collection and had been decidedupon before this sale."The auction catalogues were ready, but as already mentioned the State of Baden-Württemberg had the right of pre-emption till August 20, 1975, a right which wasactually exercised at the very last possible moment.

It is gratifying to note that after all these disagreeable, partly speculative and partlyprovocative reports the collection was preserved for the public. The major part isnow located at the Furtwangen Uhrenmuseum, the rest at the Heimatmuseum atVillingen-Schwenningen.The most important 488 objects were selected for the auction of September 25/26,1975. The present catalogue is the only documentation for the entire collectionbefore it was split up. It is being printed in a single edition of 4800, of which 4500cloth-bound and 300 as a numbered luxury issue calf-bound. Apart from this shortpreface, amplified by a number of excerpts, it is otherwise left in its original form as"The catalogue for the auction which was never held". It is interesting to note thatthe much smaller documentation catalogue without prices fetched the proud sum ofSFr. 700 plus commission at a recent auction, which illustrates the marked and wide-spread interest of collectors for this document.
