Recent increases in capacity capability combined with lowered costs for NAND Flash have allowed architecture designers to create solutions that take advantage of the inherent benefits of NAND Flash over spinning disk as a mass storagemedium. SSD’s have no mechanical moving parts. There is no mechanical seek time or latency to overcome. Because of this, SSD’s can transfer data out as quickly as the data can be read off of the NAND Flash. While access to data is still not instant, SSD’s provide performance improvements up to forty to fifty times (40X‐50X) faster than enterprise class 15K RPM hard drives in customer applications that have high random I/O (input/output) requirements.

Now, many of the 12th generation Poweredge servers have the option of installing a flexible network fabric card (NDC) to give you a choice of LOM and to allow you to easily change it you when your infrastructure needs change. For example, this makes transitioning an environment from 1GbE to 10 GbE much easier. Just change the card that you are using to one of a higher capacity. These cards plug into [ …] and depending on the server, give you the choice of vendor (Broadcom, Intel, and Qlogic), technology (Fibrechannel over Ethernet (FCoE, or iSCSI), interface (SFP+ , Base-T) . They are also integrated with iDrac server management so that they can be monitored seamlessly as part of your overall systems management.

The Life Cycle Controller keeps an inventory of the contents of the server. If, at boot up, the LC detects that a component has changed (been replaced) it is able to automatically discover the firmware version of the ‘new’ component and if required, re-flash the firmware to that component and apply the users previous settings. This is a huge aid in keeping a large number of machines at a pre-determined revision level and a standard set of low level configuration settings. This assists in minimizing admin time spent on reconfiguring servers and removes admin error from the equation. This applies to NIC/CNA/RAID and motherboard replacement. Customers must have a vFlash card in the LC to store these settings on. NOTE: *REQUIRES ADDITIONAL STEP TO ENABLE ON MOTHERBOARD: After the admin kicks off automated restore, then the Motherboard replacement process is automatic. Automated restore of the motherboard, once it’s kicked off, will also support Service Tags and Mac Addresses

Graphics processing unit is a high-performance many-core processor that accelerates a wide range of applications, but is most common in HPC and VDI environments that have been proven to benefit from the extra computing power. Other compute intensive environments (like financial trading) are now beginning to see a place for this capability Depending on the server, these units are either internally installed or connected externally. Note that applications have to be specifically programmed and compiled to take advantage of the GPU.

Dell recently added Fresh Air validation to select Enterprise products that allows companies to run hardware in the data center at extreme temperatures and humidity levels. We previously warrantied these products for such conditions and have now added validation with supporting white papers. Fresh Air products include server models such as the R610, R710 and T610, select Powerconnect switches and Dell Powervault MD and Equallogic PS 4100 and 6100 series arrays. We will continue to support and expand this program in the 12th generation.
