About our logoThe logo has been designed with the idea of the abstract Lancewood shape. Arrowheads form an idea of direction and movement through school and school life. It is also an abstract interpretation of a thumbprint capturing the idea of identity and belonging. The logo also references the three main ideas of the school vision; self, community and future.

Welcome to Rolleston College We are a future focused and inclusive secondary school providing a learner centred education for the rapidly growing, wider Rolleston community.

Our aim is to provide a challenging and empowering learning environment that will develop the skills, knowledge and dispositions necessary to enable our learners to shape their lives, develop communities and transform futures.

Within a flexible learning environment we will provide a high quality education that focuses on excellence and allows each and every learner to stand and succeed as who they are and develop the confidence to be the very best that they can be.

Welcome to your local secondary school.

  • Horoeka Haemata – the Flourishing LancewoodHoroeka Haemata, the name that has been gifted to the college by Te Taumutu Rūnanga, Ngāi Tahu means the flourishing Lancewood.

The Lancewood tree is an important and powerful image that lies at the heart of Rolleston College’s purpose and motivation. It captures the essence of how we define the learning and personal development journey at Rolleston College.

On one level we see the tree as representing our learners as they transition from adolescence to adulthood during their time at Rolleston College. Just as the Lancewood goes through a significant change as it matures so we see our learners developing as they accept challenges and overcome obstacles during their educational journey.

The tree also links the College to our local area and our past as the Lancewood is a prominent tree in our community.

It is used here to show how the learner develops the three aspects of our vision; self, community and future. As they progress through their secondary education years the various branches that are the school systems and structures, protect and nurture them.

    SELF

  • The qualities that make up the Rolleston Spirit identify the key values and dispositions that are important for our learners to develop during their time at Rolleston College. They focus on developing the individual learner’s awareness of self, community and future.

These qualities are based on international research highlighting the key skills that are most valued in the workplace as well as the attitudes required to flourish as an individual in the modern world.

By providing a learning environment that nurtures and challenges, supports and extends it is our aim that all learners will develop their social responsibility and their self-awareness through the fostering of and reflection on, these qualities.

These qualities are closely aligned with the Vision, Principles and Values outlined in the New Zealand Curriculum (2007) that speak of developing learners who are confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners.

Developing the Rolleston spirit will equip learners to…

To create a sense of community where learners can develop a strong sense of belonging, identity, responsibility and spirit each learner will be placed in a Whānau where they become part of an extended learning family. Your child will belong to a group that will have a teacher as a Learning Coach for the duration of their time at Rolleston College who will be the main point of contact for you and your child during their time at school.

Learning Coaches will build strong, meaningful relationships to support your child’s interests and needs by working alongside them to inspire, help set learning goals and monitor their progress. The strength of this partnership can help determine the level of success a learner has at school and can be used to encourage them to engage in and take ownership of their learning.

Each Whānau will develop a culture that celebrates involvement and co-operation as well as fostering a healthy sense of inter whānau competition.

The whanau are named after the four seasons.

    Raumati YellowNgahuru RedHōtoke BlueKōanga Green

The four seasons acknowledge both Ngāi Tahu, as the original inhabitants of this area, as well as Selwyn’s distinct seasonal variation. This is our way of embracing our connection with our community and the geography of our local area.

Whānau coloursWe see the seasons as being distinct and different but ultimately combining to make a whole. It is this combined entity that is more powerful than the individual components. One season by itself is strong but all four give and nurture life and so are greater than the individual parts. This reflects a learner’s journey through secondary school where the progression of the four seasons is similar to a learner progressing through the year levels. It is a journey full of challenges but ultimately also full of growth and development, where each stage adds to completing the whole person.

As a school we see individuals as strong but when they work as part of a community they are stronger.

  • Every learner’s academic progress at Rolleston College will focus on developing the critical skills that have been identified as essential for success during their school years but more importantly in ensuring success beyond school.

The programmes of learning will be developed and delivered in order to allow learners to develop these key skills as well as gaining the required content knowledge from all areas of the New Zealand Curriculum [2007] namely, Mathematics and Statistics, English, The Arts, Technology, Social Sciences, Physical Education and Health, Learning Languages and Science.

This focus on critical skills will enable learners to develop authentic transferable skills as well as an understanding of key content related concepts.

Critical Thinking and Problem SolvingThis involves the ability to ask good questions. With work structures less likely to be as hierarchical as in the past, we now need problem-solvers with critical-thinking skills to tackle problems. We need to be able to sift through an increasing amount of information and decide what is important. Part of this involves curiosity; coming at a problem as a learner rather than a knower. We need to develop the skills to ask questions like, why is this important? What are other people thinking about this? How does it all come together? How can we understand this from different angles?

Collaboration Across NetworksThere is an increasing reliance on teamwork in the modern world. With this comes an increasing need to develop the skills associated with functioning as part of diverse teams. With technology we can have virtual teams that cross borders, so we need to be able to collaborate safely with people in a variety of contexts. It is important that we develop in our young people the confidence to thrive in a connected world.

Agility and AdaptabilityTo function effectively an individual has to think deeply, be flexible, be willing to change, be adaptive, and use a variety of tools to solve new problems. We exist in a world of change and this rate of change is constant therefore the skills of adaptability and agility are important skills to develop.

  • CommunicationConcerns about written, oral and presentation skills are widespread. We need to be able to communicate in a clear and concise manner. We need to be able to communicate our thoughts effectively and convincingly.

Assessing and Analysing InformationWith technology everyone experiences information saturation. We are dealing with more than just an enormous quantity of information, we are dealing with constantly changing information. We now need to be able to synthesize and evaluate information from a wide variety of sources.

Curiosity and ImaginationIn addition to developing skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, we need to develop skills such as curiosity, imagination, and creativity. We need to develop individuals who can think of creative solutions, who have learned to be innovative and inquisitive.

Innovation and EnterpriseWe need to produce a generation who are prepared to stretch the envelope and test the boundaries. We need minds that find creative solutions to challenging problems.

Literacy and NumeracyWe also need to maintain a clear focus on ensuring that basic literacy and numeracy skills are developed and enhanced. We need to ensure that we develop learners who can do the basics easily so that they have the confidence and skills to spend their energy on more challenging tasks and problems.

  • The Rolleston College Curriculum is designed to maximise the learning opportunities provided within purpose built, modern and adaptable spaces.

The curriculum framework will provide a wide range of personalised and collaborative learning experiences ensuring coverage of all aspects of the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC, 2007).

These experiences are designed to ensure that the delivery of learning is innovative, learner centred, skills relevant and flexible to the needs of all learners.

The Rolleston College Curriculum and the Rolleston Spirit are aligned to the school’s vision and its aim to empower, develop and provide opportunities to transform learners with the various communities that they exist within.

The Learning VehiclesThree primary Learning Vehicles are designed to deliver this curriculum at both the junior and senior level. They provide the framework to nurture the learner during their junior years as well as to successfully transition them into the senior school and beyond.

They have the combined aim of providing pathways to enable learners to develop the competencies they need for lifelong learning, success, self-confidence and joy.

They are designed to ensure that they provide the opportunity to develop not only content, but also the critical skills necessary to appropriately use that knowledge independently.

The school day will be divided into three basic learning periods that will provide learners with opportunities to have a number of learning experiences appropriate to their needs.

Junior School Learning VehiclesAko Learning (AL)This is where learners meet with their learning coach to monitor their progress, develop their personalised (Inquiry) programme and develop their individual literacy and numeracy programme as well as their health and wellbeing programme.

Connection Learning (CL)Connection learning is a multi-disciplinary approach to skill and knowledge development. It is delivered in a collaborative environment with opportunities for individual and small group work.

The content is appropriate to the context and the focus is on delivering not only knowledge but also skill and disposition development in a learning environment that is authentic and flexible.

Selected Learning (SL)Selected learning is where learners can choose from a rotating menu of Technology, Arts, Language and Enrichment options. It is also where the Physical Education and Health programme will focus on involvement and movement and the development of the well-being of all learners.

There is also the possibility for flexibility between these three environments depending on individual learner needs.

  • Senior School Learning VehiclesIn the senior years learners will continue their journey in advanced learning environments that will prepare learners for academic success and achievement.

The Rolleston College Curriculum aims at enabling learners to gain an idea of their passions and purpose in life. Learners will work towards attaining NZQA certified qualifications (NCEA).

Ako Learning (AL)This is where learners:• Continue to develop their skills and competencies with their learning advisor.• Work on deeper personal inquiry projects.

Connected Learning (CL)In Year 11 this vehicle becomes more refined and is delivered in blends of two core subjects (English, Science, Maths, Social Sciences).

Selected Learning (SL)In Year 11 this vehicle offers a range of specialist subjects including extension options.

In Year 12 and 13 as the learning becomes more specialised, the number of selected options increases as learners prepare for life beyond school.

There is also the possibility for flexibility between these three environments depending on individual learner needs.

  • Physical

Rolleston College is a modern and future focused school and this is reflected in its design and build. Its design takes into account research on how people best learn and provides the physical environment that best encourages the learning process. The buildings and environment provide flexible spaces and furniture designed to accommodate a variety of learning opportunities and styles.

Learners can be grouped in various group sizes as appropriate to the learning context and situation.

The College operates under a Public – Private Partnership (PPP). This means that a private company has built a high quality school with excellent facilities and resources and is responsible for maintaining it. This frees the teaching staff from the burden of looking after large, sophisticated buildings, grounds and facilities and allows them to focus their time and energy on learning.

It has been designed to provide the very best facilities possible whilst ensuring that the learning spaces are very flexible and adaptable. It incorporates small and large spaces for general learning plus specialised areas for physical education and sport, technology and the creative arts.

The design of the school will encourage optimal learning.

VirtualTechnology is a vital tool enabling learners to explore, inquire and connect. It is not the use of the tool that is as important as the way it is used to find the answers to questions and solutions to problems.

Technology is an integral component in the learning process at Rolleston College and the vision is to ensure that the appropriate technology is available anywhere and at anytime according to need.

We are a BYOD school and families will be given specification guidelines to assist them in their purchase of an appropriate device.

As the Lancewood diagram shows the aim is to use technologies not only to assist the learning process but also to develop key transferable skills.

Co-curricular activities are an important part of life in Rolleston College and the wider community.

We will provide a full range of sports and physical activities as well as a wide range of arts related and cultural opportunities.

Wherever possible we provide activities that learners have a passion for, or interest in.

We see these four areas as vitally important in the development of the whole person. Our facilities for both physical and arts related activities will ensure that learner passions and interests will be encouraged and nurtured.

A love and appreciation of co-curricular activities is one of the things that makes our community unique and the College will be encouraging and nurturing this passion.

    20

  • UniformThe Rolleston College uniform is a new, modern uniform for a new, modern school.

The uniform identifies a learner as belonging to Rolleston College but also has some choice to allow for individual preferences. It has been designed, after consultation with our community, to have enough flexibility to suit all learners so it can be worn with pride.

The main colours (navy, grape, silver and cyan) have been selected to link the school colours with the local area, the Lancewood and the colours associated with many of our contributing schools.

When considering the uniform and after consultation, it became apparent that the uniform had to be smart, practical, affordable and easily available to purchase.

We enjoy seeing our learners wearing their uniform with self-confidence and school pride.

The junior uniform is designed for active learners. The senior uniform is designed to prepare learners for work appropriate appearance.

  • Excellence Excellence is a key word in all aspects of life at Rolleston College.

    We aim for academic excellence.

We aim for excellence in all of our co-curricular activities.

We aim for excellence in how all members of the school community present and conduct themselves.

The concept of excellence goes beyond just academic progress and incorporates how we see ourselves and how we respect those around us and our environment.

We aim for excellence where excellence is defined as achieving at a level just beyond what we thought was possible and then seeing how much higher we can climb.
