Tips for Replenishing Your Prayer Life By Emily Sullivan

This special Jubilee of Mercy calls us to reflect on the reality of God’s love for us. Perhaps the most difficult facet of this love and mercy is that we must accept it. It is not enough that we have received the mercy of God—we must choose to say “yes” to it so that God’s mercy might change and transform us. Living out this reality of God’s love and mercy for us can some mes be challenging, especially when life gets busy. The Office for the New Evangeliza on’s intern, Emily Sullivan, has created 5 Strategies for staying connected to God’s mercy: “What if you woke up today with only the things you thanked God for yesterday?” Try to ask yourself this and reflect on it throughout the day. Show gra tude to God for the things that you don’t ordinarily give a second thought: waking up and being able to see your loved ones, having the ability to walk, or taking a long, relaxing shower because of our plen ful water supply. The days that you don’t have me for God are the days you need Him most. Saint Paul reassures us that life is not meant to be stressful. He wrote, “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplica on with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath and just let go, and let God. Ask God how you can service Him for the day. We all know that a rela onship rooted in love requires effort from both people. Though God wants to listen to each of our prayers, it is important to remember to ask how you can help Him. Ask that you may glow with the Holy Spirit to be a vessel of His mercy and bring more people into rela onship with Christ. Ask to be empowered by the word of God so that others can see how wonderful life is when you live for God.

Don’t forget, “they will know we are Chris ans by our love.” Drive in silence. Phone calls and emails, radio and television—our minds are o en occupied with the noise of technology, leaving only a li le of our day for quality me with God. The silence does not always need to be filled with inten onal or rote prayer; instead, the silence is meant to help you reflect on your day, to invite God into that reflec on. Silence gives us the opportunity to encounter God, whereas most

mes technology takes up most of our a en on. Pick one verse from the Bible and meditate on that for a few minutes before you start your day. Make it your inten on for the day. Wake up and select just one or two verses from the Bible to read over a few mes. Allow the Scripture to sink in so that you can be mindful of its message all day long. This is a wonderful way to incorporate Scripture into your busy lifestyle because even though you are reading a small sec on, you will mindfully carry it with you throughout the day. Mercy Challenge It’s difficult to remain mindful of Christ with constant interrup ons overcoming our day. On these hec c days, try the spiritual work of mercy of maintaining pa ence! Pray the Our Father and cast your worries on the Lord!

ON SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLIES, AND MALE VOICES Copyright 2016 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

“Jesus is real.” It’s a billboard message in Indiana somewhere. At least that’s what Fr. Nicholas Monco, O.P. said as he used the words to open his homily at the Chicago Associa on of Holy Name Socie es (CAHNS) Spiritual Assembly Mass hosted by St. Jane de Chantal Parish on South Aus n Avenue in Chicago last weekend. Yeah. Fr. Nick said he was returning home from an event in the Hoosier State thinking on what he might talk about as the main celebrant and homilist for this Mass, the 36th annual such celebra on in a CAHNS tradi on da ng back to 1981. Then just like that, he said, he came upon the billboard, and a homily was born. St. Jane’s Holy Name Society did a great job in pu ng the Mass together, and since my home parish--St. Constance--hosted the event back in 2009, I know that these things don’t just happen. The St. Jane guys nailed it, though, right down to the perfect weather. And this is par cularly important because the event begins each year with the Procession of Banners. It’s really quite cool, and one of the reasons I haven’t missed a Spiritual Assembly Mass since a ending my first one at St. Monica’s in 2002. I counted twenty-six banners this year, represen ng just as many Socie es. All colorful and each held high around the block as we processed as one into church. Impressive . But not as impressive as the No. 1 reason I a end the Spiritual Assembly Mass every year: the singing that ensues when Mass begins. Well over two hundred men were in a endance last Friday night

and there’s something powerful about all of those male voices being li ed up together. From We Gather Together to They’ll Know We Are Chris ans to Holy God, We Praise Thy Name, our voices filled the place, and when the organist carried us through the Great Amen, I felt the whole place trembling. Or maybe it was just me. Because deep down, I was certain of this: if the Father, Son, and Spirit were listening (and really, how could they miss us?), they were smiling. Besides speaking to “Jesus is Real” in his homily, Fr. Monco told a well-known story about the English writer/philosopher G. K. Chesterton. As the story goes, when a newspaper put the ques on, “What’s Wrong with the World?” to several great thinkers of the day, Chesterton wrote back in brief response: “Dear Sirs: I am.” With true humility, as Fr. Nick explained, Chesterton understood that everything begins within. If we live our discipleship--really live it--with each other, with our families, with our neighbors, with our work colleagues… Well. You know where I’m going. But discipleship is hard, as today’s readings point out. First Elijah calls Elisha to give up all that he knows to live his life in God’s service. Then Jesus says, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was le behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” Gulp. S ll. God understands, I pray, that even with our shortcomings, we honor him by the effort we put forth to follow him. And on our best days, God surely hears--and celebrates--our hear elt hymns of praise.
