A MESSAGE FROM OUR SEMINARY INTERN, KATHY GENUS
For some reason the Presbyterian Church does not have a strong history of
Adult Spiritual Formation. Being a Christian Educator, I have been to many,
many workshops and participated in many forums on the subject.
Presbyterians tend to have this understanding that biblical learning after
confirmation is limited to worship and the sermon, and no one I’ve met to
date truly understands the reasons why.
I was reminded of this dilemma last week as I met with our potential
confirmands for this year. For most young people the confirmation process,
while they are making their own personal commitment to Christ and to the
church, it is still precipitated by their parent’s desires for them. At one church
I served, the student was no more interested in becoming a member of the
church than the man on the moon. We were discussing his stepping out of
the process and his mother stormed into my office reminding me that it is
essential for him to be able to list confirmation on his college resume. WOW.
That was an eye opener for me.
As we begin the process of confirmation for our young people it reminds me
how important the community of faith to which they are becoming a member
is as a role model of faith not only for them but for all who enter our doors.
Cornerstone has had many joys and many struggles. It is a unique
congregation who is still in the process of finding their way and their
particular voice. I am constantly amazed at the wonderful things this
congregation has been able to come together and make happen. That in and
of itself is an amazing testimony to who you are and how much you value
your Christian walk.
While our works our wonderful, it is a one-sided equation. The other side of
the equation is continued study of scripture in community with one another.
We have an amazing women’s group that is meeting and wrestling with the
book of Esther and another exciting group that meets on Tuesday evening
and is wrestling through a dynamic book about being “real followers” and our
Session is beginning to engage into a study on the book of Acts. These are all

MISSION STATEMENT
We the people of Cornerstone

WONDERFUL things! But they comprise about twenty of our members;
we need more. We need to have all of our members engaged in some
kind of study, so that we can continue to nurture and strengthen our
relationship with God, but also with each other.
When we can speak the language of faith confidently, name our concerns,
our struggles and our understandings; it is then that we engaged in true
spiritual formation. As we become more aware of who God is in our lives
we become more confident in times of happiness and sorrow, we deepen
our experience of what it means to be God’s very own and we become
more attentive to the ways in which God is at work in our lives. And what
an example that would that be to our children and youth if they saw all of
the grown ups they interact with at church engaged in meaningful and
rich bible study?
If you are a parent, you know that your children learn far more by how
you behave than they do by what you say. If they do not see adults
around them with bibles, and hear adults around them struggling with the
bible and having regular conversations about their faith and their church
experience, how will they learn to be faithful Christians themselves? Yes
the Holy Spirit is in each of us, but if we do not acknowledge that Spirit
and are open to it working in our lives, it is trapped.
Lent is the perfect time to take up something new! The world tells us to
give up something for lent in a discipline of sacrifice. For us reformed
folks, we believe in taking on something for Lent, adding to our Christian
walk. Why not allow this Lent to be the time you join our Lenten study.
Pastor Courtney has chosen an amazing book entitled “A Clearing
Season.” This book is focused on an invitation to come closer to God. So
here is your invitation: it’s an invitation of excitement and anticipation,
it’s an invitation to join with your community of faith and together
wrestle with how each of us can become closer to God and to listen for
the amazing plans that God has for each of us, independently and as a
church community. Our study is meeting on Tuesday evenings, however,
if that time or day does not work for you, we can provide additional
times. Wouldn’t it be simply AMAZING if we have four or five Lenten
groups going? Let us pray and let us celebrate this wonderful invitation to
draw even closer to One who claims us and calls us by name!
Pastor Courtney and I look forward to participating in this Lenten
opportunity with you!

Mission Committee Meeting
on February 10th
Sunday, February 10, 2013 will be our first mission committee meeting immediately following the church service. In the meeting we will discuss the ongoing
mission efforts of Cornerstone, see where we have come, and where we wish to go. It will be a time of prayer and planning for those interested in leading missions within the church. Through the missions committee of the Cornerstone community, we can hopefully continue to represent the passions for missions of the entire congregation and design ongoing outreach and mission opportunities for the congregation. The hope is not only to be a group that schedules specific activities each year, but a group that prayerfully considers the passions of our church and the needs of the surrounding community. This will include planning ongoing mission efforts, but will also include leading initiatives and developing ongoing relationships with outreach organizations. Please come to the mission committee meeting if you are interested in being a

will be donated to the Jackson Food Pantry.

Volunteer Hosting Sites Needed for Sandy Storm Relief
To Ocean County Faith-based Organizations,
In the aftermath of SuperStorm Sandy, families in Ocean County need help, lots of it. Thousands of families still cannot return to their homes. But there is good news. There are scores of volunteer groups from around the country that are eager and poised to make an exodus to the Jersey Shore to help us rebuild. And all they need is a place to lay their head at night, and maybe a shower and a hot meal.
Jersey Shore United (a coalition of local churches and faith-based organizations seeking to bring relief, hope, and support) and the Ocean County Long Term Recovery Committee (a non-profit organization committed to providing recovery to those most in need) want to develop a network of faith-based organizations and other facilities where these volunteers can be hosted. Is your organization considering hosting, or maybe already planning to host, volunteers? If so, please let us know.
The commitment to host volunteers is dedicated work and can be a challenge to congregations, yet the gifts and rewards are many fold. Showers may need to be installed and bunks built. Programs may need to adapt. And members less affected by Sandy may wish to “return to normal.” But the benefits can truly be strength-ening. Local mission, even after recovery is “complete,” will grow in focus. The sense of community within your organization will become more powerful. And the lives of all who spend time in fellowship with the di-verse people who will come to volunteer will be profoundly enriched.
And the advantage of forming and participating in the network of volunteer hosting sites is tremendous. First, the physical infrastructure needs of host organizations can be bundled into a unified grant proposal for funding through foundation. Some foundations are indicating that this is the preferred method for funding; many requests from individual organizations become very difficult to administer, so foundations look to or-ganizations like the Ocean County LTRC to provide unified requests.
Second, the coordination of case and construction management with the network of volunteer hosting sites promotes efficient work assignments for volunteers and removes the burden of finding, managing, and as-signing work from the shoulders of host organizations. This is critical for groups that can muster their congre-gation to provide hospitality, but would find it difficult to find and evaluate work needs, and then manage work teams day in and day out.
Please consider the possibility of becoming a volunteer hosting site thoughtfully and prayerfully. The first meeting to present a unified grant request for volunteer host site infrastructure upgrades is on February 19, so please respond no later than January 31. The following link will take you to a simple web survey that will help us know your level of interest and understand where you are in your discerning process. We will get in touch with you promptly to begin supporting your efforts.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QYZBTPN
Thank you for your consideration, and do not hesitate in contacting me if you have any questions concerning this request. We would appreciate your reply regardless of your organization’s level of interest. This will help us in our efforts to provide balanced support to all affected areas of Ocean County. Also, please forward this to the others in your ministerium (if you have one in your town) so we can reach those that are not in our distribution.
Sincerely,
Peter Farwell

Tuesday Women’s Bible Study
Meets on Tuesdays from 10:30 AM - 12:15 PM at the home of Elizabeth Hughes.
Study of Esther—It’s Tough Being a Woman, concludes 2/12
STARTING FEBRUARY 19th: Beth Moore’s study of
James: Mercy Triumphs—All Women Welcome!
James, Jesus' own brother, started out as a skeptic. In Beth Moore's newest study, see how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos but in other ways, James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any other New Testament book. Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer.
Church Ladies
The Church Ladies meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 1:00 p.m. The women take turns hosting the meeting at their homes. All women are welcome to join them for a time of fellowship, friendship, and service to our church and the community. Talk to Joan Mallison for more information.
Next meeting: Wednesday February 20th, 1:00 pm.
A NEW Adult Evening Study Starts 1/15
A new evening study will be co-taught by Kathy Genus and Pastor Courtney starting on Tuesday night 1/15 at the home of Bob and Laurie Wegner from 6:30—8PM. We will meet each Tuesday through February 12.
The study will be based on the book: Real Followers: A Radical Quest to Expose the Pretender Inside Each of Us by Michael Slaughter and Warren Bird. Many Christians, disillusioned with lives of spiritual mediocrity that have been dampened by today’s rampant materialism and cafeteria spirituality, are asking the same question: “Where is the substance that can move our church beyond ho-hum Christianity?"
Suggested donation towards the cost of the book is $15. Scholarship money towards book cost is available. Books are available Sunday or Tuesday.
Lenten Study for Adults Starts 2/19
This study will be co-taught by Kathy Genus and Pastor Courtney starting on Feburay 19th from 6:30—8PM and meeting each Tuesday through March 26.
The study will be based on the book: A Clearing Season: Reflections for Lent by Sarah Parsons.
Description: People all around celebrate the day-before with colorful parades and over-the-top parties. Then Wednesday arrives … Sigh. Lent. has. begun. Friends give up innocent things and stress out to live a more perfect life six weeks. It's time to rethink Lent. Lent can be positive like a spring-cleaning for the soul! Lent offers us time to pause, consider, and renew our relationship with God — an altogether hopeful (not dreary) experience. Cost of the book is $5. Scholarships for books are available.

Per Capita
To provide support for Monmouth Presbytery, Northeast Synod and General Assembly,
our church is asked to pay “dues” to the Presbytery each year that is equal to $35 per
member. Therefore, we are asking each member to give a special offering of $35 per
year to help us cover this expense. This is what we call the per-capita. If you have not
yet had a chance to give your dues, please place it in the offering basket on Sunday
(mark it as “per-capita”) at your earliest convenience. Thank you.
Electronic Giving
A Simple and Convenient Way to Give
In this new year of 2013, consider signing up for electronic giving. Cornerstone relies on
the financial support of the congregation and electronic giving offers an easy way to
give on a recurring basis. It also provides a much needed consistency in the donations
that our church receives. It’s easy to sign up—automatic donations can be made using
a credit card or directly from your checking account. For more information, talk to
