Brunch at BGAkris and Presbyterian Hospital Committee host a brunch at Bergdorf’s BGTuesday, January 05, 2010

(NEW YORK) January may be the month of Blueprint Cleansing, Core Fusioning, Jivamukting, and Pure Food and Wineing, but even as the fashion world repents for December’s grievances, publicists and designers are shamelessly scouring Eater, Grub Street and Diner’s Journal. After all, Fashion Week dinners must go on. Monkey Bar, The Standard Grill, and even perennial favorite The Waverly Inn will feel a little stale to the likes of traditional hosts like Francisco Costa, Narciso Rodriguez, and Diane von Furstenberg. But with a slew of new restaurant openings from A-list chefs, there are plenty treats to choose from.

The hautest prospect? The Mark, that breathlessly-anticipated fine dining emporium finally set to open this month at The Mark Hotel. With Jean-Georges Vongerichten(proverbially) in the kitchen, neighbors Sant Ambroeus and Café Boulud have something to worry about. Daily money is on Calvin Klein Collection, for this elegant uptown space would nicely contrast September’s downtown affair at The Standard Grill. Paging Malcolm Carfrae!

As for Narciso? Yesterday, it was announced that Scott Conant, the Italian-minded mastermind of Alto, Convivio, and Scarpetta, will open a new joint at the Cooper Square Hotel. Conant’s as-yet-unnamed restaurant will replace the underwhelming Table 8, the brainchild of Los Angelean (andPuck protege) Govind Armstrong. It’s currently closed for renovations, but a soft opening during Fashion Week isn’t out of the cards. We suspect Rougier has already made a call.

And given 47-year-old La Grenouille’s December wow-ing of the Times’ Sam Sifton--the most glowing review ordained in the critic’s three months on the job--expect an onslaught of fresh faces to queue up for the “arresting, important, rare” experience. While Graydon Carter has commanded the space for his Best-Dressed List luncheon, the most recent fashion event held in the intimate second floor private space was a November luncheon hosted by Yoox’s Federico Marchetti. Diane, this is all yours. Downsize your usual studio affair and show staff how much you love. Nothing says thanks like those heavenly frites.

But of course, the ultimate coup will be hosting the first private event at the reinvented Tavern on the Green. The tourist favorite closed at 4 a.m. on January 1; it will remain so for “at least six weeks” while its new operator, Dean J. Poll, redesigns. Poll, who also runs the relatively tasty Boathouse restaurant in Central Park, has signed a 20-year license on the former Tavern establishment. The concept and even the name may very well change. Given the space’s soaring capacity--1,700 guests were on hand to ring in the New Year--it would require an extremely deep-pocketed fashion firm to manage a total buy-out, but surely Poll will cultivate a few desirable private rooms. And we can expect a few event-inclined European designers to come to town, n’est pas? SurelyCavalli has a store to open. ASHLEY BAKER

Prada Denies Richemont Talks...AgainCompagnie Financiere Richemont not in talks to buy--or eventually acquire--The Prada GroupTuesday, January 05, 2010

(NEW YORK) The rumor that won’t die has resurfaced--and been denied--again. When Italian daily La Repubblicareported in August 2009 that Prada’s bankers had contacted contacted Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA about selling a stake to the company (which controls Chloé, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Montblanc, Piaget, and many more), Prada immediately denied the talks. However, today, the New York Post has revived the rumors with an exclusive story that Prada was nearing a deal to sell about a third of the company to Richemont. “Richemont is expected to take a passive stake under the terms of the deal, which is still subject to sensitive negotiations, sources said,” The Post reported. “Insiders close to the companies believe Richemont could eventually take control of Prada with a majority investment.”

And yet again, Prada is denying the reports, with company spokesman Andrea Gaudenzi saying it “categorically denies any negotiation whatsoever to sell any share to Richemont. There are no talks underway to sell either a minority or majority stake to Richemont.” The Prada Group, which operates Miu Miu, Car Shoe and Church’s, has faced serious financial struggles recently, and despite its debt of approximately €1.2 billion (or $1.44 billion) has claimed to have turned down several investment offers from private-equity groups.

The potential merger suggested by The Post “could create a global luxury powerhouse to compete with Richemont’s larger rival, LVMH. Combined, Richemont and Prada would be better equipped to expand into fast-growing markets like China.”

Rag & Bone Times TwoA presentation for the men, a show for the womenWednesday, January 27, 2010

(NEW YORK) Add another appointment to your Fashion Week schedule. This season, Rag & Bone will host two different events on Friday, February 12. The men’s collection will be shown via a 12 p.m. presentation, while the women’s runway show will bow at 5 p.m.. Both will take place at the event space 82 Mercer Street. Last September, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville showed their complete offerings together in a single runway show at Cedar Lake.

The brand, which is carried at a remarkably wide range of stores from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Odin and Browns, currently operates 3 freestanding boutiques--two on Christopher Street and one at 119 Mercer, a block away from the new show venue. For Spring 2010, Neville and Wainright have launched three companion collections--Rag & Bone/JEAN, Rag & Bone/SHIRT and Rag & Bone/KNIT. These basics will include 3 new denim styles, enzyme-washed cotton oxfords, and classic knits.

¡Contactando a Malcolm Carfrae!
