Day 1: Wednesday, September 13

13:00Registration opens / Refreshments

13.45Welcome and Introduction

Dr Marcel Piens, Coatings Research Institute (CoRI)

14:00 – 14:30Overview of Southeast Asia paints & coatings market

Kaushal Mathur, Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific, Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaSoutheast Asia is an attractive market for coatings. The SEA coatings market comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Singapore as the key countries. Some of the main coatings segments are decorative coatings, automotive-oem coatings, protective coatings, marine coatings and wood coatings. The market trends, as well as the market drivers that are contributing to the growth of the market and restraints, which are inhibiting the coatings market in Southeast Asia will be discussed. In addition, the main coatings segments, which are making vital contribution to the overall Southeast Asia coatings market will be highlighted.

14:30 – 15:00Speciality chemicals in construction markets, focusing on concrete plasticisers and architectural coatings

Akihiro Kishi, IHS Chemical Division, IHS Global, JapanWorldwide, the construction industry contributes about 13% to the global GDP and is one of the most important elements of every economy. China alone accounted for nearly one-third of the total global value of speciality construction chemicals, followed by Western Europe (21%) and North America (15%). In China, the volume of speciality chemical consumption dropped from 2012 to 2016 but consumption on a value-basis increased. The increase was attributed mainly to a replacement of first- and second-generation concrete water-reducing agents with higher-priced third-generation super-plasticisers, which are required to build higher-quality structures.

About 45% of the coatings produced worldwide are used to decorate and protect new construction, as well as to maintain existing structures, including residential homes and apartments, public buildings and plants and factories (referred to as ‘architectural’ or ‘decorative’ coatings). Another 40% of the coatings are used to decorate and/or protect industrial products (called ‘product finishes’). Without coatings, product lives might be shortened drastically and many products would not even be marketable. Demand in Asia continues to rise faster than elsewhere in the world and the region now accounts for 50-55% of global consumption on a volume basis.

15:00 – 15:30Multi-functional additives: wetting and dispersing

Pairat Pipattanaboon, Troy Siam Co, ThailandThe importance of wetting and dispersing additives is generally not recognised until it is too late. In addition to the poor development of colour strength, the following typical defects can occur: changes in shade, flocculation, floating, Bernard cells, rub-out, loss of gloss, settling, etc. Pigment dispersion can be broken down into three steps wetting, dispersion and stabilisation.

Wetting the pigment particles is essential for them to be finely distributed in a liquid. Air entrapped in the pigment powder must be fully removed and the pigment particle completely surrounded by the liquid medium; Dispersion of a pigment in a vehicle/resin requires mechanical energy (grind) to break up the clumps of pigment into smaller particles; Stability of system: once the pigment particles are broken up and distributed homogeneously during the dispersing process the next step is to ensure that this homogeneous dispersion is retained during the subsequent storage and application of the paint.

Troy has developed highly effective dispersing, wetting, and grinding aids for a wide range of organic pigments, including carbon black. The correct additive dosage is the key to optimising performance and cost-in-use.

15:30 – 16:00Titanium dioxide reduction in decorative paints

Simon Spurr, Imerys Kaolin, IndonesiaImerys’ high performance Kaolin Clays impart unique performance properties to architectural paints, industrial coatings and printing inks. This includes dry hiding opacity, higher whiteness, lower yellowness hue and even barrier properties (stain resistance, anticorrosion). Kaolin is a naturally occurring hydrated aluminium silicate mineral. It is characterised by its lamellar or platy particle shape, fine particle size and chemical inertness. The combination of platy shape and fine particles size results in improved spacing of TiO2 particles in a paint film and improved opacity while achieving cost savings.

Day 2: Thursday, September 14

10:00Registration opens/Refreshments

10:30 – 11:00Next generation elastomeric waterproofing coating for Indonesia market

Dr Nurudin Budiman, Connell Bros Company, IndonesiaIndonesia is the biggest market in South East Asia for elastomeric waterproofing coating. Currently the polymer or binder technology used is acrylics copolymer, which has some technical drawbacks, such as losing mechanical properties on ageing, more water absorption and colour retention. A new in-situ hybrid ‘urethane acrylics’ technology address all the challenges. Elastomeric waterproofing coating formulated with in-situ hybrid technology has a high balance between tensile strength and elongation, high percentage of recovery property, higher crack bridging property and much lesser water and chemicals absorption. With the hybrid urethane acrylics technology it is possible to create products replacing 2K cementitious waterproofing and fibre mesh sandwich coating.

11:00 – 11:30Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) – a high potential method for the evaluation of anti-corrosive pigments

Dr Wolfgang Wald, Heubachcolor, GermanyThe testing of anti-corrosive coatings is a highly time and resource consuming procedure. While over time the testing period for system screenings has already been significantly reduced from years to months and then to weeks, ranging from natural weathering to different forms of accelerated testing, such as salt spray testing and humidity testing, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is said to have a high potential to reduce a single test to hours. This would enable technologists and scientists to set-up high-throughput screening in the field of anti-corrosive coatings.

This talk will present the results of different paint systems varying binders, substrates, anti-corrosive pigments etc and compare salt spray test results with the test results of much faster electrochemical impedance spectroscopy from the standpoint of an anti-corrosive pigment manufacturer.

11:30 – 12:00COFFEE

12:00 – 12:30Coating degradation – using accelerated test chambers to accurately correlate with outdoor weathering and corrosion

Richard Kish, Q-Lab Corporation, Cleveland, USAThis report presents new information on the importance of product orientation, light, water, humidity and heat to simulate exterior coating degradation and corrosion in accelerated test chambers. It looks at outdoor coating degradation and how it can be replicated in fluorescent and xenon chambers to reproduce coating degradation including delamination, gloss loss, cracking, yellowing, peeling, fading and colour change. Advances in corrosion testing will also be discussed, including the importance of humidity control in new test standards.

12:30 – 13:00Anti graffiti coatings - easy clean

Ashish Yadav, Dulux Fiji Limited, Lami, FijiRecently a new additive has been introduced in the industrial range with the help of silicone-modified polyacrylate (OH- functional) chemistry. Due to its high surface activity, the additive accumulates on the surface of the coating where, on account of its OH reactivity, it can be integrated in the polymer network by reacting with suitable binders. If the additive is fixed to the coating surface via its reactive groups, the properties that it brings to the surface are maintained for a long period of time. In a multitude of coating systems, additives increase the hydrophobic and oleophobic properties, which can significantly improve the water- and oil-repelling behaviour. Moreover, it brings about a reduced dirt adhesion with a simultaneously increased easy-to-clean effect. The additive increases substrate wetting, levelling, surface slip, water resistance (blush resistance), anti-blocking properties and weather resistance. It can also be used where anti-graffiti and tape release properties are required.

13:00 – 14:30LUNCH

14:30 – 15:00How the coatings industry can communicate and manage quality for an infinite number of colours

Per Jutterstrom, IEC Plant Engineering Sdn Bhd, MalaysiaWith today’s modern technology in the coatings industry we have the possibility to add almost an infinite number of colours and formulations into the tinting systems. However, the challenges are how to actually be able to keep a huge number of colours in an accurate way when it comes to communicating the range to the customers and how to produce them accurately and consistently throughout the production process.

Both these two challenges can be addressed and solved with a more holistic approach to the management of colours, with a scientific system as a platform together with digital colour standards that will make the work of big data of colours easier to manage. This will lead to savings in time and costs for the coatings industry and a better range of useful colours for the end user.

This paper will present the importance of this holistic approach and how that result can be developed into more useful colour collections and at the same time eliminate physical standards.

15:00 – 15:30Effect of embedment on blasted surfaces prior to coating – how to identify and test it

Ramoo Puru, Sibelco – Eurogrit BV, The NetherlandsWe are all aware that anti-corrosion protective coating performance depends highly on good surface preparation. There are established standards – ISO, SSPC and Company Standards that specify the parameters of an acceptable surface preparation. However, all forms of expendable abrasive blastcleaning leave small fractions of particles from the spent abrasive lodged and wedged in crevices of substrate. This phenomenon is called ‘particle embedment’.

During a field performance test on Eurogrit coal slag abrasives, a more objective or quantitative method was suggested to clarify this. An adhesion (pull-off) test was conducted to ensure that embedment of coal slag grits during blastcleaning is not detrimental to coating performance. New steel plates were blastcleaned to SA 2½ using various Eurogrit Aluminum Silicate abrasives. Protective coatings were then applied and allowed to fully cure. Adhesion tests in accordance with ASTM test methods were carried out. Test results show an average adhesion strength of 1000psi – three times what the Major Oil Companies Standard has specified for a three coat system ie 300psi and double what was specified for splash-zone or deck coating ie 500psi. The suspected contaminants, in the form of embedment coal slag grit, had no detrimental effect on adhesion or, thus, on coating performance.

15:30 – 16:00Are you interested in saving production time, power cost and raw materials?

Richard Potter, Ystral Asia SingaporeWith a completely novel way of production, Conti-TDS Inline Dispersing Machines from Ystral have started to displace traditional high speed dissolvers for lacquer, paint and printing ink production.

Whether you manufacture decorative paints, industrial coatings, coil coatings, automotive lacquers, printing inks or even adhesives, large amounts of powders have to be dispersed into liquids. In most cases, this process requires a lot of effort; it is time consuming and usually dusty. With the Ystral Conti-TDS-Technology, pigments, fillers, thickeners, and other powders can be inducted fast, dust free, and from any container into the base liquids.

The results are high quality dispersions with proven and significant potential savings in raw materials, production time, floor space, labour and energy consumption. For the production of colourants and tinting pastes, the subsequent bead milling process can typically be reduced from 30% to 70% or, in some cases, it can even be eliminated completely.

These results can be achieved by the combination of multiple processing steps in one machine while maintaining constant production parameters: emptying of big bags, sacks and containers; powder transport; powder incorporation; and finally wetting and dispersing under vacuum.
