A court has dismissed one of two cases against the president of Croa-tia’s soccer federation because of his anti-gay comments.Vlatko Markovic said last year no gay player will be part of the Croatian national team on his watch

because “only healthy people play football.’’A spokesman for the Zagreb county court said Thursday that a judge rejected one of the cases against Markovic this week. The hearing for the second suit is in June. The two

cases have been filed by separate gay rights groups.European soccer’s ruling body has also opened a case against Markovic. He was re-elected to a fourth term as federation president in December.

Thierry Henry scored for New York in the fourth minute, Landon Donovan countered for Los Angeles in the 41st and the Red Bulls and Galaxy tied 1-1 on Saturday night.“Last year, I didn’t have the

feeling that it was a rivalry or that type of game,” New York coach Hans Backe said. “But this year, with the (designated play-ers), the power strikers on both teams, it is a special game.”In a showdown between Major

League Soccer division leaders, neither team was able to get the go-ahead goal in the second half despite a flurry of chances.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho was banned for five Champions League matches on Friday after accusing UEFA of conspiring to help Barcelona.UEFA’s disciplinary panel ruled that Mourinho made an “inappropriate’’ comment in a post-match interview. Mourinho also was sent from the dugout for comments to the match officials during the first leg of the semifinals last week. After Madrid’s 2-0 loss, Mourinho said UEFA and referees actively tried to help Barcelona reach the Champions League final in each of the last three seasons. He served one match of the ban when Madrid was eliminated in Tuesday’s game at Barcelona, a 1-1 draw, and another match was suspended for three years.Mourinho therefore can’t communicate with players and coaches at Madrid’s first three group matches next season. UEFA also fined Mourinho ?50,000 ($73,000).Madrid immediately announced it would appeal Mourinho’s punishment to UEFA.The club said the European football au-thority failed to give clarity in the legal process.“Our coach does not have the full right to defend himself since the declarations

which merited the opening of the case, and for which he has been sanctioned, are unknown,’’ Madrid said in a statement. In his post-match news conference, a combative Mourinho listed the referees who he said gave Barcelona favorable decisions in UEFA matches.“Every semifinal the same thing always happens. Why? I’ll live my whole life with this question but I hope one day to get the answer,’’ Mourinho said.Mourinho described it as a “scandal’’ that Chelsea, his former club, was denied pen-alty appeals against Barcelona in 2009.It was a “miracle’’ that Mourinho’s 10-man Inter Milan team eliminated Barcelona in the semifinals last year, the Portuguese coach said.UEFA also banned Barcelona substitute goalkeeper Jose Pinto from the Champi-ons League final for receiving a red card during a touchline brawl at halftime in Madrid.Pinto sat out the second leg and must now miss the May 28 final against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium and a further match next season.Barcelona will appeal Pinto’s ban, the Catalan club said in a statement on its website.Last October, UEFA imposed a two-match ban on Pinto for “gross unsporting conduct’’ when he played against FC Co-

penhagen. He faked the referee’s whistle to deceive a forward into thinking he was offside.UEFA also ruled Friday that Madrid defender Pepe, who missed the return after his red-card challenge on Barcelona defender Dani Alves, should serve no further sanction. It fined Madrid ?20,000 ($29,000) be-cause the club’s fans threw missiles and invaded the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium field. The UEFA Appeal Body is already sched-uled to meet on May 16 after Madrid challenged UEFA’s rejection of the club’s protests regarding Barcelona players’ behavior in the first leg.Madrid accused Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets of directing a racist slur at Madrid defender Marcelo, who is black.Madrid also asked UEFA to sanction Busquets, Alves and Pedro Rodriguez for feigning injuries. It also wants UEFA to look again at Pepe’s red card.UEFA rules also allow Mourinho to ultimately pursue an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport because his ban is for at least three matches.

French soccer authorities have begun an inquiry into claims that national coach Laurent Blanc and other coaches secretly agreed on a quota restricting the number of black and Arab players in training programs. The investigative website Mediapart said last week that the aim was to limit to 30 percent the number of players of African and North-African descent in training academies once they reached the age of 13. Blanc insists such a move was never discussed.French soccer federation technical director Francois Blaquart is sus-pended pending the inquiry, which included a transcript of a conversa-tion involving Blanc, Blaquart, under-21 coach Erick Mombaerts and under-20 coach Francis Smerecki in November. In the transcript, an angry Smerecki calls the proposal a “discrimina-tory” idea that should never see the light of day. He has not yet com-mented on Mediapart’s article. The focus of the conversation was to find a way to limit the number of players with dual nationalities coming through the French youth teams before then deciding to play for their country of origin as adults. All four will be interviewed this week by a special commission headed by Patrick Braouezec, who had already led an inquiry examining the reasons for the France team’s strike at last year’s World Cup. Laurent Davenas, president of the federation’s ethics council and a member of the French sports ministry will also be involved in the inquiry.Blanc, on vacation in Italy, will be interviewed Friday or Saturday, Davenas said. The turmoil comes just as Blanc was beginning to reverse the team’s fortunes following the World Cup debacle. The team, under former coach Raymond Domenech, went on strike in protest at Nicolas Anel-ka’s exclusion and was eliminated in the group stage without winning a match.French Sports Minister Chantal Jouanno urgently requested that the federation open an inquiry hours after Mediapart’s story broke last Thursday night. Jouanno wants it to be completed by the end of this week. The federation said Tuesday the conclusions will be discussed further at a meeting next week and it will not comment until then.Andre Merelle, a former head of France’s national training center at Clairefontaine until being released by Blaquart in September, felt there was a problem with the perception of dual nationals within French soc-cer’s hierarchy.“During my time we were already reproached for taking so many blacks and Arabs,” Merelle told Mediapart. “The argument that I was given was, ‘We pay them, we bring them up, and then they go and play abroad (for another country).”’Former France star Lilian Thuram, Blanc’s teammate when France won the 1998 World Cup and European Championship two years later, said he was shocked when he heard race quotas had been discussed. Former France defenders Basile Boli and Luc Sonor and former France goal-keeper Bernard Lama have also expressed outrage.Others, like France midfielder Alou Diarra and striker Karim Benzema, have publicly backed Blanc, although both said they are upset at the very thought of quotas being discussed.

FIFA has set a target date of July 2012 to approve goal-line technology systems that could be introduced before the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.Soccer’s governing organization said Tuesday that candidates must pass a further two rounds of tests con-ducted at a stadium of their choice. FIFA said the results will be presented to its rules-making body in July 2012.Days earlier, the goal-line debate was reignited with another major error by match officials. Chelsea’s Frank Lampard scored against Tottenham on Saturday when replays showed the ball had not wholly crossed the line. Chelsea won 2-1 to keep alive its Premier League title hopes. It was Lampard’s “ghost goal’’ against Germany at the 2010 World Cup - when his shot did not count for England despite bouncing down off the cross bar beyond the goal line - that persuaded FIFA President Sepp Blatter to end his long-standing opposition to technology. Blatter apologized to English officials after watching Germany’s 4-1 win in South Africa.Technology companies bidding for approval must tell FIFA in the next month if they want to take part in tests scheduled from September to December.Systems achieving 90 percent accuracy in “simulated match scenarios’’ could be invited for more tests in March-June 2012. Ten systems were tested at FIFA headquarters in March but their accuracy was unac-ceptable.Hawk-Eye, the Sony-owned company whose ball-tracking technology is used in tennis and cricket, de-clined to participate because its system uses cameras that need to be set up in a stadium.

A top official in Warsaw has barred fans from an upcoming league match at the site of several disturbances this year.Warsaw province Governor Jacek Kozlowski said Thursday that he is closing the Legia Warsaw stadium to fans for Friday’s game against Korona Kielce. Police say the stadium has been the site of numerous incidents this year.Poland is the host country for Euro 2012.Kozlowski’s decision comes two days after hooligans caused $13,000 in damage following Legia’s win over Lech Poznan in a Polish Cup match at a stadium in Bydgoszcz. In response, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for stricter measures from city and soccer authorities to prevent such disturbances.

Ecuador and Greece will play the first soccer game at Citi Field, an exhibi-tion on June 7.Ranked 55th, Ecuador is preparing for the Copa America in Argentina, where it has first-

round matches Paraguay (July 3), Venezuela (July 9) and defending champion Brazil (July 13).The Mets said Thursday that the goals will be along the third-base line and in right field.

Read more: Jean Tigana resigned as Bordeaux coach on Saturday after his daughter was verbally abused in the stands watching the team lose 4-0 to Sochaux in the French league. “It was a disastrous evening both for the club and me,’’ Tigana told a news conference. “My daughter was verbally abused in the stands. She already has problems at school. I therefore decided to stop.’’ Bordeaux fans loudly booed at halftime after the team had conceded four goals before the break. They had expected Bordeaux to contend for a Champions League spot this season, but the club is currently in ninth place, 21 points behind leader Lille.“If people think I’m the problem and end up abusing my 16-year-old daughter, then it’s tragic,’’ Tigana said. “To me, that’s not football.’’ Tigana became Bordeaux coach in the offseason after Laurent Blanc accepted the job of France coach. Tigana, who won the European Championship with France in 1984, is a former player at the club. “It’s the last press conference that I’m giving you,’’ Tigana said. “Good-night.’’ Bordeaux’s fitness coach, Eric Bedouet, is expected to take over as interim coach.

Uruguay striker Sebastian “El Loco’’ Abreu has been suspended four matches and Argentine forward Ger-man Herrera banned for five games for their roles in a brawl after Botafogo’s Brazil-ian Cup match against Avai last month. Both players were involved in a fight with Avai players after Botafogo was eliminated on

a disputed late penalty. They were seen charging toward op-ponents and throwing punches.Botafogo coach Caio Junior was suspended one match, while three Avai players also were punished by Brazil’s sports tribunal. The clubs said they will ap-peal.

Spanish media reports say Bolton defender Marcos Alonso has been involved in a drunk-driving accident in Madrid that killed one person.Spanish newspaper El Pais reports that the 20-year-old

Spanish player crashed his vehicle into a wall Monday, killing a female passenger and injuring four others. The newspaper says Alonso was found to have a blood-alcohol level above the legal limits and possibly faces criminal charges.Alonso has made eight appear-ances for Bolton since joining the English club from Real Madrid at the beginning of this season.

A Czech Cup match between Slavia and Olomouc has had to be abandoned due to rioting fans of Slavia. The referee called off the first leg of the cup semifinal after the first half at 1-1 on Thursday. The kickoff had to be postponed for 20 minutes after more than 1,000 Slavia fans invaded the pitch. The angry fans were protesting against Slavia’s management, who they blame for the team’s debts.Riot police had to use force to prevent the fans from entering the club’s offices at the stadium.Slavia, one of the republic’s oldest and most famous clubs, owes its players part of their salaries and faces possible relegation for that.Slavia is likely to be fined by the federation and could lose the match 3-0 as punishment.

Swiss club Young Boys has fired coach Vladimir Petkovic and hired Christian Gross to take charge next season.Petkovic was released after a 1-1 draw against Lucerne on Saturday left the Bern club a distant third in the league behind title challengers Zurich and Basel. The Bosnian coach’s assistant, Erminio Piserchia, will pick the team for the final four matches.Petkovic led Young Boys to a runner-up finish last season after surrendering its lead to Basel in the final week.Young Boys says Gross has agreed a two-year contract.

Gross won four league titles in 10 years at Basel before being fired in 2009. The former Tottenham coach then joined Germany’s Stuttgart but was fired last October.

A Finnish court has convicted two Zambian brothers of match-fixing in the Nordic country’s football league last year. The Oulu District Court says the Yobe brothers were found guilty of taking ?50,000 ($72,500) in bribes to influence the outcome of a game between TPS of Turku and their club AC Oulu in September.Donewell and Dominic Yobe were each given seven-month suspended sentences and ordered to pay the sum of the bribe to the state. They admitted guilt. The court said Friday that the brothers had deliberately played “below their normal level’’ and made deci-sions that allowed TPS to win the game 5-0. It did not identify who paid the bribe.

The Argentine Football Association says its team will play all three group matches in July’s Copa America in front of full houses after 70,000 tickets for the host nation’s games were snapped up just an hour after going on sale. The AFA says tickets to watch the likes of Lionel Messi were sold almost immediately after going on sale Thursday via internet.Argentina opens the tournament on July 1 against Bolivia in La Plata, followed by games against Colombia on July 6 in Santa Fe and Japan five days later in Cordoba.Argentina, currently coached by Sergio Batista, last won the South American championship in 1993. The team reached the final in the last two editions in 2004 and 2007 but lost to archrival Brazil.

Anti-Saudi protests mar Piroozi winHundreds of Iranian protesters chanting “death to Saudi’’ clashed with police and were forcibly removed during Piroozi’s Asian Champions League 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad on Tuesday. The protests follow weeks of rising tension between predominantly-Shiite Iran and Gulf states over the Saudi-led military force sent to Bahrain to prop up the country’s embattled Sunni monarchy. Saudi football officials had expressed concerns about security ahead of the match but were persuaded by AFC officials to play the match. An eyewitness told The Associated Press two protesters were seriously injured and one detained after police ex-pelled the demonstrators in the second half. The semioffi-cial Fars news agency said police detained several protest-ers.

A leading Colombian footballer has been suspended for three months, fined the equivalent of $3,000 and ordered into rehab after admitting using marijuana, football authori-ties in the country said Tuesday.Wilder Medina, a striker with the Deportes Tolima club, who is currently joint top-scorer in the Colombian top divi-sion, tested positive for the drug for the third time on March 26 following a 2-0 victory over Deportivo Cali.Medina acknowledged he used the drug during a disciplin-ary commission hearing.“Wilder has a problem with addiction and wants to reha-bilitate himself, he needs help,’’ the player’s lawyer, Andres Charria, said. “Marijuana is not doping, it doesn’t improve physical performance. He’s living a human problem.’’ Me-dina also had positive tests after matches on Feb. 5 and 13.Medina has scored eight goals in the current Clausura tour-nament, top of the scoring charts alongside Once Caldas striker Wason Renteria. He also scored 16 goals in the past 2010 Apertura tournament.Charria said an appeal against the punishment was possible. Otherwise, Medina’s suspension begins this weekend.

Australia will play Serbia in an international friendly on June 7 in Melbourne, this time with much less on the line that their last meeting at the 2010 World Cup.Australia beat Serbia 2-1 in a Group D match at Nelspruit, South Africa when a 2-2 draw would have sent the European side through to the second round. Serbia beat Germany 1-0 but lost 1-0 to Ghana.Australia was beaten 4-0 by Germany and drew 1-1 with Ghana, also failing to get past the opening stage.Serbia is No. 16 in the current FIFA world rankings and Australia 20th.Australia coach Holger Osieck said Thursday he was pleased to be playing against a team of the caliber of Serbia in the leadup to the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Kroenke reiteratesdebt-free Arsenal takeover plan

American sports tycoon Stan Kroenke has reiterated that he does not intend to borrow money against Arsenal to fund his proposed purchase of the remaining shares in the

Premier League club.In an effort to appease fans worried by the example of Manchester United’s 2005

takeover by the Glazer family, Kroenke made the pledge Friday in the official of-fer document for the 37 percent of shares he does not own.

“The offer will not be funded by way of any debt finance for which the pay-ment of interest on, repayment of, or security for any liability will depend on

the business of Arsenal,’’ KSE UK Inc., a company owned by Kroenke, said in a statement.

Kroenke’s fellow American, Malcolm Glazer, borrowed heavily against United to raise the finance for his takeover of the Premier League

powerhouse.Debt-free before the takeover, United currently has liabilities in

excess of 500 million pounds ($809 million).KSE “has committed to continue to operate the club in line with

our existing self-sustaining business model,’’ Arsenal said in a statement.

Kroenke’s mandatory bid was triggered last month when he increased his stake past a 30 percent threshold. He assumed

effective control of the north London team by buying stakes held by former directors Danny Fiszman and Nina

Bracewell-Smith.His offer of 11,750 pounds ($19,313) per share values

the club at about 731 million pounds ($1.2 billion). Forbes magazine estimates Manchester United as

being worth $1.9 billion, placing it top of its list of most valuable clubs for seven straight years.

But while Manchester United is top of the standings and aiming for a fourth Premier

League title in five years, Arsenal has not won a trophy of any kind since the 2005

FA Cup.Kroenke, who also owns the NFL’s St.

Louis Rams, NBA franchise Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche of

the NHL and current Major League Soccer champion the Colorado

Rapids, bought his first stake in Arsenal in 2007.

His bid for the remaining shares could yet be frus-

trated.Russian investor Alisher

Usmanov signaled his intent to hold onto his

shares two weeks ago when he in-

creased his stake to 27.1 percent

by spending 70,950 pounds

($115,600) on six shares.

Iranianpolice clash with anti-Saudifans at gameIranian police on Tuesday clashed with protesters demon-strating against Saudi Arabia during a match between Iran’s Piroozi team and the Saudi al-Ittihad club. The 200 protesters, out of a crowd of 10,000, chanted “death to Saudi,’’ objecting to the role of Saudi armed forces in the bloody crackdown by the Bahraini monarchy on its Shiite subjects over the past months.Iran’s Piroozi team, meanwhile, won the match 3-2, with two goals by Hamid Reza Ali Asgari, in the 13th and 68th minute and one by Shpejtim Arifi in the 16th minute.Al-Ittihad’s Mohammed al-Rashid and Sekou Berthe scored in the 19th minute and during injury time in the second half, respectively. The game was part of the Group C competition of the Asia Champions League, but also took place between two regional powerhouses on either side of the Middle East’s deep Sunni-Shiite divide. An eyewitness told The Associated Press that two protesters were seriously injured. The Fars News Agency added that sev-eral protesters were detained.Police expelled the protesters from the match in the middle of the second half. The unrest in Bahrain, which erupted in February, has played out against the region’s deep rivalries between Shiite and Sunni Muslims. Protesters from Bahrain’s Shiite majority have demanded that the king-dom’s Sunni minority rulers grant them equal rights and a political voice.Saudi Arabia, a largely Sunni nation, has rushed to the aid of Bahrain, while other Gulf countries have accused predominantly Shiite Iran of med-dling in Bahrain’s affairs by allegedly trying to stir Shiite unrest

STARS For the MillenniumOne of the most important, yet taken for granted in the United States: is the right to aneducation. As many people would quote: “It is the key to success.” Those with college degrees haveshown to bank more than those who are high school dropouts; and high school graduates. What is itabout having an access to education? It’s the power and a red carpet full of countless opportunities. This is one of the main priorities for The STARS Project, founded in Chicago, IL, in February 2010.The STARS Project have made their year, with many accomplishments and struggles, as a non-for-profit to provide middle school students and high school students opportunities for STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers. A pilot program is conducted with nineoriginating STARS Project members from Benito Juarez High School, who tutor groups of thirty-sixManuel Perez middle school students, ranging from 6th through 8th grades. The objective of the pilotprogram is to fix an academic gap that students face from transitioning from middle school to highschool.Going to college, there’s a lot of the expenses that not even financial aid can fully cover. Withthe tough economy and the lack of jobs, it makes it harder for students to pay off college. A successfulSTARS Project member, Luis Cabrales was able to over come it. Cabrales was awarded for the 2011Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship in April. The Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship program isawarded to students to pay off for his/her schooling, until completion of his/her PhD. When asked howhe felt about the process of applying for the BGM, he says “It is a really long process!” Out of the eightessays that needs to be submitted, one of his best was his personal statement. “I’ve tried my hardest andput all my effort,” says Cabrales, “I wanted to be seen as a whole person.” Luis Cabrales was born inChicago, IL. Spanish, being his first spoken language, was placed in a bilingual class and learnedEnglish in second grade, at Pickard Elementary School. After graduating from Pickard, he now attendsBenito Juarez High School and is anticipated to gradu-ate in June 2011.Luis is also one of the nine originating STARS Project members, through an inspirationinfluence by Yolanda Sanchez. “ I was actually the one who came up with the name for STARS.”Cabrales joked. His goals is to major in biology and pre-medicine. He plans to attend Illinois WesleyanUniversity as an undergraduate and transfer to UIC to complete his PhD. Due to an experience when hewas 6 years old, Luis decided to pursue a career in the medical field. He found out that his mother wasdiagnosed with cancer. “At the time, I didn’t under-stand what cancer was until I searched to see what itwas. By the time you’re an adult, you have lived your life.” Cabrales says, “I want to give children asecond opportunity to start theirs.”
