Directed by Mohan Raja, the movie has Nayanthara, Fahad Fazil, Sneha, Prakashraj among others in the cast. Music is by Anirudh. Produced by 24AM Studios, it is releasing on 22 December. Says the actor, ‘I have come out of my comfort zone for Velaikkaran. Learnt a lot working with seasoned professionals like Fahad Fazil and Prakashraj. Now I believe that I can do any sort of film’. EXCERPTS OF HIS INTERVIEW Q: Tell us about Velaikkaran? A: It is the story of a corporate professional, who wonders where his all hard earned money goes. He wonders whether they are looted or robbed. Every single employee can relate himself/herself with the story. It is a typical Mohan Raja film. I told him to go with his scripting style. It has a serious content and we have done full justice to it. I am confident that audience will welcome the film as there has been a lot of hard work. Q: You are sharing screen with Nayanthara for the first time. How was the experience? A: Nayanthara strives for perfection. A brilliant actress, she knows her value and works hard to live upto expectations. Her role will be vital in the movie. Q: Is Velaikkaran an experimental movie? A: No. It is a film that I am doing out from my comfort zone. It has a serious content. I want to prove a point that I can do such movies too. I hope that Velaikkaran would take me to the next level in Tamil cinema. Q: On allegations that his movies have stalking scenes. A: It feel that I am targeted by a few. Tell me a movie that doesn’t have such scenes. But neither Remo nor Rajini Murugan conveyed a bad message to society. I personally feel I was victimised. However I take the criticisms in a constructive manner and will ensure that such things don’t occur again in my movies. Q: Will you be doing serious films in future? A: After Velaikkaran, I am working in Ponram’s next. It is a lighthearted entertainer. And then I have a movie to do for filmmaker Ravikumar for Netru Indru Naalai fame. It would be a sci-fi thriller. An actor gets around four to five stories from which he has to pick his choice. I feel that I should be recognised as an actor who can do any type of role. Q: Why such a big gap between your films? A: It is not a conscious decision to take time between my releases. A movie like Remo or Velaikkaran demands lot of time. You have to be emotionally involved with the characters. I am firm believer that more than numbers, the success of films should be the talking point. Quality matters most than quantity. However I will strive to ensure that I have at least two releases every year from hereon.
