President’s Message, !OCOD has been on an exciting ride since moving from the parking lot to a small indoor space and then into our current location. The club has grown more than we ever expected and that growth is continuing as we are now considered a potential location for an increasing number of seminars, special classes, and trials. We are even being considered for the prestigious AKC Regional National Competitions.

At our October meeting, we will be discussing two proposed investments in the building that will make our center even more desirable and a better place to train your dog.

A security system. We have been offered the donation of a security system – we would only have to pay for installation.

New mats. Many of our current green mats are showing significant wear and need to be replaced. We are considering upgrading to mats that are specifically formulated for dog training and would last much longer.

More information on these two issues is listed within this issue of Chatterbarks. Due to the projected cost, both will require a vote from the general membership.

Remember that every member is a “shareholder” in OCOD, in other words, an owner. Be sure to think like an owner when you are in the building. Too much dog hair in a ring? Don’t tell someone else - get a broom or a vacuum and clean it up. Something out of place? Put it back where it belongs. Trash can is full? Empty it. This attitude will make all the difference to the condition of our facility and keep it nice for everyone.

With our current training center, OCOD members get a lot for their membership. In return, our members need to contribute to our programs and trials and the upkeep of the building on a regular basis. Look for me to be talking more about that in the coming months.

Wins & Brags

Important Notice regarding the October General meeting:

Items to be discussed and voted on.

Security Cameras. We have been talking about installing security cameras in the Training Center for the last several months but ran into a number of roadblocks. Each proposal we considered was either too expensive or required expertise we don’t have within the club.

At the September meeting, we were told of a generous offer: a local company would donate a “gently used” security camera system and we would only have to pay for installation. That is projected to cost $600 or less. This is far less than other similar systems and would provide a professionally installed system to the club.

Mats in the Training Center. Our mats are wearing to a point that they will need to be replaced in the near future. After extensive research and discussion, we are considering mats that are custom made for dog training. Here’s why. To replace the green mats for the 4 rings we have now plus the puppy room would cost approximately $20,000 and we may get 3 years (4 at best) of use from them. Over 10 years it’s entirely possible we would replace them 3 times.

The custom mats have a life expectancy of 10 years and it’s very possible they would last longer. We have priced out covering the entire front room (not just the 4 rings) plus the puppy room. We will need to have them installed and purchase a couple pieces of cleaning equipment. The total for all of this is expected to cost between $50,000 and $60,000. This investment would give us the finest training/trialing surface for dogs that exists today.

Please come to the October meeting prepared to discuss and vote on these important issues.

Kelly Zen & Piper Lynn “Piper” earned a 3rd Place Win in the 12-18 month Breed Class at the Shih Tzu Fanciers of CFL specialty show on 9/16/16 in Orlando. “Piper” earned Best of Breed 1st Place Win and then  3rd Place Win in Best of Winners at the Toy Dog Club of CF Match on 9/16/16 in Orlando.! !Kelly Zen and “Jett” earned a 1st Place Win in Wildcard Novice at the Toy Dog Club of CL trial on 9/17 in Orlando.!!Ruth Andrick and April-Mae “April” received the AKC Therapy Dog Title on !!Ruth Andrick and St Jon Life of Riley's Copper Fancy “Fancy“ earned a 3rd Place Win in 12-18 month class both 9/24&25/16 at the West Volusia Kennel Club in Deland.!

Donna Ward and Neff's Ring of Fire “Ember“ made her debut in the 4-6 mo puppy class and earned Best of Breed on 9/25/16 at West Volusia Kennel Club's conformation show in Deland.  !!Donna Ward and Saranac's Luck of the Draw “Chip” earned Best of Breed, earning his final point and becoming BRONZE GCH (GCHB)! “Chip” went into groups and earned a 4th Place Win out of 17 dogs at West Volusia Kennel Club's conformation show in Deland.  !!Congratulations !
