Dear Friends,
Thank you for your continued support. 2016 was a big step forward for Rest.Stop.Ranch programs for caregivers and
people living with memory loss. We enriched the roots of our seasonal once-a-month program Sunday Stroll and
Memory Café, thanks to Memory Café seed funding from the MA Dept. of Developmental Services. We invested
$12,280 on outdoor furniture, a program & volunteer coordinator, engagement activity kits (Bird Tales, Fish Tales,
Flower Fun, Drums & Dancing), an accessible port-a-potty seasonal rental, signage, and marketing. We were also
featured in a 2016 book by Jytte Lokvig, “The Alzheimer’s and Memory Café, How to Start and Succeed with Your Own Café.”
Jytte shared that with over 250 submissions for the book from across the U.S.A., we were the only program hosted
1. outdoors 2. by a family 3. at a private home. Continuing to focus on caregiver holistic health, we launched a
2-hour Respite Retreat for weary caregivers, age 8-88+. The pilot program was well received. Retreats are available
free-of-charge, year-round, by appointment with me. In November 2016, we heard the need for a North of Boston
Younger Onset Caregiver Support Group for people under age 65, companioning a loved one with Alzheimer’s/Dementia,
under age 65. I attended facilitator training with the Alzheimer’s Association of MA/NH, asked Annette Grant Keane, RN, MSW,
to be a co-facilitator, and we began hosting the group at the Caretaker’s Cottage, January 12, 2017.
During the 2016-2017 academic year, I completed a fourth unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Havenwood
Heritage Heights, a Continuing Care Retirement Community, in Concord, NH. I piloted an 8-week “A Star with Heart”
self-care program for caregivers, which they have continued on their own. Completing four units of CPE has
deepened my listening skills and strengthened my presence.
$12K Seed FundingHow we spent the money: • $5K Accessible outdoor furniture • $2.7K Program & Volunteer Coordinator • $1.3K BirdTales, Fish Tales, Flower Fun, Drums & Dance • $1K Accessible outdoor port-a-potty, rental May-Oct • $1K Outdoor signage • $1K Marketing, facilitator honoraria, refreshments, overhead costs

“Karl and I are thrilled to receive a contract from the Mass. Department of Developmental Services to further develop and implement our inclusive Memory Café.We are the only Ma & Pa providers on the list!” – Mary E. MacDonald
“I like to see dad respond again. At [the facility] I noticed he was unresponsive. That’s when I knew we had to get out. Just seeing him check his watch [he was concerned about the event’s end-time] is a great sign.” – Bob & Jeanne enjoy the Koi Pond
