The care centre organised various activities, such as making and decorating cardboard spectacles to emphasise the importance of keeping them clean as wearing dirty spectacles could create a trip hazard resulting in a fall. HC-One, the care company that manages Tenlands, also organised a smoothie -making competition, asking homes to create smoothies containing in- gredients which could be good for your bones. Nicola Howarth, Chef at Tenlands, along with Melanie Allen who is one of the Catering Assistants, designed the “Bone-offee” Smoothie, which included fortified milk, cream, mars bars and cod liver oil. All entries were first judged at regional level, and Tenlands came first in the competition. The competition then went on to be judged at National level at Falston Manor in Sunderland on Tuesday 28 th August. Home Manager, Victoria Lee said, “We are proud to say the national com- petition was also won by Tenlands.” Victoria and Nicola attended the awards ceremony and were presented with £100 worth of vouchers by HC-One Managing Director, Pam Finnis. If tears could wash away our pain,

We would not feel such hurt again,

The heartbreak felt since you’ve been gone,

We wouldn’t wish on anyone,

But today is your birthday, So we’ll have to be brave, And accept God’s taken

what first he gave.

Ferryhill Methodist Church is holding a 'Bon Marche' Fashion Show on Tuesday, 18th September, from 7pm. All are welcome to attend

the show, with a spokes-person commenting; “Come along and see the new range of autumn wear modelled by our very own models!”

A Ferryhill man has died after he was involved in a collision with a car and a van whilst riding his motorcycle.Durham Police said John Armstrong died at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough shortly after the crash, which occured on Sunday afternoon (2nd September) on Linden Road, Ferryhill. It is understood Mr Arm-strong’s Honda Firestorm had collided with a Renault Clio, which was on the other side of the road, and then collided with a nearby parked Citroen Berlingo van.The family of the 61 year-old father of two, from Westcott Terrace, said they had been left "numb" by his loss.Mr Armstrong, a glazier with a Bishop Auckland company, leaves behind his wife, Joan, children Lee and Allison, and two grand-children.A statement from the family said, "We have been left devastated by John's tragic death on Sunday."He was a keen biker of many years experience and

was on his way home after a ride out with a friend."He was a wonderful family man and we have been left shocked and numb by his loss."

John Armstrong of Ferryhill, who was sadly killed in a road accident last weekend.

Grandma’s Chapel Hatby Nancy Hardy

In days gone by, Yes! as long as that,If you went to chapel you wore a hat.It could be frivolous, it could be smart,Large or small as long as you looked the part.It could look like a plant pot on your head,Colour, shape, size, asides would be said.“Did you see Mary’s new hat,A milliner’s delight? I don’t know about that!”Summer it was straw but if it caught in the rainThe crown became pointed casting feelings of shame.Grandma’s hats were usually blackComplimented by a band with a bow on the back.Straw or velour dependent on the time of year. The giant hat pin you gazed at with fear. There was definitely competition with regards to the hatYou looked at others and thought “I wouldn’t wear that!”But Grandma’s hat was an important part of her attire.I’m sure it would be the first thing rescued if there was a fire. You can have your berets, fascinators and such,But at the end of the day they don’t come to much,So if perchance you happened to meetGrandma walking in the streetOff to chapel her hat in placeTo go without it would be a disgrace.

Transport police have said that it was fortunate no one was killed when vandals dropped a wooden pallet over a Ferryhill railway bridge onto a train, smashing its windscreen. Officers are still searching for those responsible and the train company involved has offered a £5,000 reward for any information leading to their identification. The pallet hit the driver’s cab of the Aberdeen-Pen-zance Cross-Country train as it passed under Station Bridge, in Ferryhill Station, at 1.50pm on Saturday, 25th August. The shocked driver managed to stop safely. British Transport Police Sergeant Cheryl Bainbridge, said it was an “incredibly irresponsible and dangerous act,” adding that, “it was lucky no one was injured or killed. We believe this was a deliberate act of vandalism that could have had tragic consequences.” The 46-year-old male train driver, from Jarrow, South Tyneside, reportedly saw

a number of youths on the footbridge and was able to describe them to police. Sgt Bainbridge said: “Despite the pallet smashing through the windscreen the driver, remarkably, was uninjured, but he has understandably been left very shaken by the incident. “It is beyond belief that anyone would put items in the path of moving trains and we need to trace these mindless vandals before their actions result in serious harm to rail staff or passengers.”

Andy Cooper, Cross-Country managing director, said: “These vandals must be apprehended. The possible consequences of the actions of these youths are truly terrifying and it is lucky our driver escaped uninjured.” Anyone with information that could help police inquiries, or who saw anything suspicious in the area on the Saturday in question, is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or Crimestop-pers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.

Reward offered for information on train bridge attack

The track at Station Bridge is protected by a 5ft high wall to prevent items falling onto the track.

The 4 Together Area Action Partnership (AAP) and Durham County Council’s Employability Team are coming together to help local companies to create 14 apprenticeships for people who live in the 4 Together area, with one girl from Ferryhill already benefiting from the scheme.Becky Pearson, 18 from Ferryhill, has taken up a hairdressing apprentice-ship with Steven Scarr Hairdressing in Church Street, Coxhoe, where she is learning all aspects associated with becoming a hairdresser. Becky said, “Everything is going really well with my apprenticeship and I love every minute at the salon. I would say to all young people that apprentice-ships are an ideal way to learn and earn at the same time.”4 Together AAP has dedicated £21,000 from its area budget to the project, with a further

£18,805 match funding from the Employabil-ity Team, to offer a wage subsidy of £2,500 and supervision costs of up to £350 to small or medium sized businesses to create opportunities for 18-24 year-olds.Financial support is available for any employers thinking of taking on an apprentice as part of the scheme, which is a great incentive to take someone on and give businesses a boost, while at the same time offering a great opportunity to a young person.Chris Buston, chair of 4 Together Partnership, said, “The Area Action Partner-ship (AAP) is always keen to see money benefitting the local area and it’s great to see a local girl benefit-ting from the money the partnership had set aside. “It's extremely rewarding for the AAP to see the real difference their input can make to the community and every year local

residents are invited to become involved in the task and finish groups which decide how and where the area budget funding is distributed, so local people can have a real say on what projects are tackled in the area. “The Area Action Part-nership is involved in the decision making as well as those who live and work in the area. We hope to help many more people just like Becky with our other projects in the future.”The County Durham Ap-prenticeship Programme, funded by the council and the Coalfields Regenera-tion Trust, is aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds in County Durham. Businesses with less than 50 staff benefit from the scheme and 125 apprenticeships have currently started across the county. For more information on the scheme, contact Alison Kirk on 03000 262 010 or email [email protected].

The procession will be led by Father Christmas in his sleigh and will make its way

Ferryhill Christmas Fayre

to the Town Hall gardens where carol singing will take place at 4.15pm. The official switching on of the town’s Christmas lights will then follow at 4.30pm. Because battery operated candles are no longer available, the 2000 Committee will issue free glow sticks to anyone taking part in the procession. Santa has also promised to make an appearance again this year and will be visiting the E-Café from 5pm-7pm to meet local children and give out presents in a specially designed grotto.Tea & coffee will also be on sale in the E-Café as well as the chance to test your luck on the tombola. Later in the evening the

event will move to the Manor House where a per-formance by the Ferryhill Town Band will be taking place. “There are still stalls up for grabs at this years’ Craft Fayre, so why not take up a stall and put your goods on sale,” suggested an event spokesperson.Stalls are available at a price of £20 with a limited number of charity stalls also being available at a reduced rate of £10. Tables and chairs will be provided as a matter of course. Anyone interested in holding a stall at this years’ event, or for any queries about the Fayre, call John Rogerson at Ferryhill Town Hall on 01740 652157.

Dear Editor,

A few years ago I found a web reference to some papers that once belonged to my great, great uncle, Dr. John Stokoe, who was a Ferryhill man and administered to Napoleon on St Helena.

This reference was on a blog and was addressed to Anne Robinson, who I subsequently discovered (via the local library) was a local historian.

I am trying to find out whether Anne Robinson had any further contact with the keeper of these papers, and am therefore trying to find a contact email address or phone number for her.

I believe that these papers were a package that were used by Paul Fremeaux to write the book “The Drama of St Helena” and as such comprised (amongst other things) Dr Stokoe’s personal journals for the period.

My great aunt, Edith Stokoe, subsequently translated Fremeux’s manuscript into English under the title “With Napoleon at St Helena”, but as far as my family is aware, the original documents have been lost.

There has been a gap in my researches due to the birth of my 2 children, but I am wondering whether your readers have any information that would help me make contact with Anne Robinson, local historian for Ferryhill.

Interestingly, Dr. Stokoe stated after administering to Napoleon, that if Napoleon continued to be kept in exile on St Helena, he would soon die. He was court martialled for his troubles, but his prognosis proved to be all too accurate.

Yours sincerely,Giles StokoeLa Vaure16480ChillacFranceemail: [email protected]

Dear Editor, Following my previous report to the readers of the Chapter, I have received bookings for 5-a-side football, children’s parties and other social events at the Ferryhill Community Hub.

Seconds Out are, in addition to their education and training programme, seeking to bring together a programme of sporting activities which will be held in either the Martial Arts room or the room where the gym used to be. The Ferryhill Bowls Club have now returned to playing regularly and have also reinstated their coaching sessions.

Due to the hard work of Dave Athey we are on course for the Bar Bistro opening on Friday 28 September. Watch this space for details of the opening night activities.

Many thanks to all of those who have worked extremely hard to ensure that progress continues to be made. If anyone wants to make a booking or seek further details of what is taking place, please do contact either Dave Farry on 0191 3725863 or Brian Gibson on Ferryhill 652743. Yours sincerely,Councillor Brian Gibson

Dear Editor,

I am wheelchair bound due to the fact that I recently had my leg amputated.

I was negotiating the footpath outside Sainsbury’s in Chilton and fell off the kerb out of my wheelchair.

I would like to express my thanks to the two gentlemen who kindly put me back into my wheelchair and made sure I was okay. God bless.

Yours sincerelyname and address supplied.

Car and mail van in crash

The newly-formed Durham County Carers Support has been established following the merger of the five local Carers’ Centres that previously operated indi-vidually within the county. Building on 15 years of experience, they will continue to provide support to unpaid family carers that support someone who cannot

manage due to illness, disability or addiction. The Parent Carer Service that was part of the former Sedgefield Locality Carers Centre is externally funded to cover a specific geographical area, and whilst this service now sits within the new countywide organisation, their remit remains the same; to support parents caring

for a child with additional needs living in the former Sedgefield locality. For more information contact Durham County Carers Support, Suite 3, Avenue House, Greenwell Road, Newton Aycliffe, DL5 4DH, call 01325 313123 or 07957 269611, or e-mail [email protected].

Introducing Durham County Carers Support

A nearby resident sent us this photograph of a serious crash between a Royal Mail wagon (background) and a car on the main A167 road on the south edge of Ferryhill on the night of Saturday, 1st September. Remarkably, according to the photographer, both drivers walked away from the accident, apparently unhurt.

Chester Plough Inn enter-tained Ferryhill Saints on a wet Thursday evening and ended up on the wrong side of 6-1 drubbing. The Riversiders welcomed Ferryhill on a wet miserable evening and, unbeknownst to the hosts, they would be even more miserable come full time.Ferryhill kicked off the game and immediately set the pace. The Saints were very bright and energetic in the opening stages and straight away had The Plough on the backfoot. It didn’t take long for the away side to take the lead when the home defense were caught napping and the striker took advantage of a good through ball and cooly slotted the ball past the oncoming Unsworth.Ferryhill had a chance soon after to double their lead but Unsworth made an excellent save from close range to keep the score intact. The home side were being stretched all over the park as Ferryhill dominated the game with some slick passing, but fortunately for The Plough they weren’t creating any clear cut op-portunities in front of goal. The home side were rocked shortly before half-time when Ferryhill extended their lead. The tall striker

Saints hit Plough for six

was allowed too much time and space as he casuallly lobbed the ball over the defence and his teammate picked his spot to make it two.The Plough kicked off the second period and started the half more positively. The Riversiders were handed a ticket back into the game in the 55th minute when Daniel Hill burst into the area only to have his heels clipped. Hill stepped up to take the penalty and converted. The goal should have given the home side a confidence boost but instead it had the opposite effect as Ferryhill stepped up a gear and took control of the game. They restored their two-goal cushion soon after when they sprung the offside trap and the wide man raced through and rounded the Plough ’keeper before slotting in an empty net.The game was effectively over ten minutes later when the Ferryhill scored a fourth from close range.Chester Plough had a chance to reduce the deficit soon after when they were awarded a second penalty. Hill stepped up again, but this time the Ferryhill ’keeper pulled off a brilliant save to deny the marksman.Minutes later Ferryhill broke forward on a counter attack

and scored again after the ball rebounded off the un-fortunate Michael Curl into the net following a good save from Unsworth. In the final stages Ferryhill had further chances to increase their lead but only added one more as the now tired and wounded Plough players looked very sore and jaded. In their next match the Saints took on Washington Honest Boys, and again ran out convincing winners, scoring five and conceding two. The goals came from centre half Karl Natress with his second in two matches, Phil Russell, the new signing who has impressed through pre-season and continues to do so at the start of the season, Steven ‘Twisty’ Ferguson, who grabbed one, an own goal coming from Paul Robson’s half way line shot and a spectacular 35 yard strike in the top corner from the man of the match Jay White.
