Your own charity Storm Trooper!
Local charity troopers and Star Wars enthusiasts are making themselves avail-able for your charity func-
tions. The Rebel Legion (the ‘good guys’) and The 501st UK Garrison (the ‘bad guys’) are Star Wars
costume enthusiasts and would like to offer their services to local charity organisations. They recently supported fundraising for Harry Woods at the Alder Hey Hospital which raised nearly £1,000 for the children’s charity. They are keen to connect with and support other people working for charity. Chilton member Jase Fox said, “Believe it or not we have no events booked in January and February this year. We’re all sat round twiddling our Jedi thumbs and we’d love to be helping those struggling registered charities out there!”Storm Troopers, Obi Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader could all make an appearance at your charity event com-pletely free of charge. They are sure to provide an attraction and make a positive contribution to your event. For more information go online to www.ukgarrison.co.uk and www.rebelle-gion.co.uk.

Appeal for young KyranLocal youngster Kyran Richmond is proving to be an inspiration to local people, moving them to raise awareness of a very rare genetic disorder from which he suffers. Kyran has been diagnosed with an incurable brain disease called Juvenile Batten Disorder, and is thought to be only the third person in the north-east ever to be diagnosed. The condition effects the nervous system and will cause eight-year-old Kyran to develop epilepsy, lose the ability to walk, talk, eat and see. Doctors say he will develop dementia and is unlikely to live past his late teens or early 20s.His parents, Debbie and Carl from Chilton, have setup a fundraising team along with other local friends and family members. They will raise money for a trust fund which will be used to buy specialist equipment that Kyran will need as his condi-
tion worsens.Mrs Richmond said, “He was born healthy and when he was about six his eyes started deteriorating, it is only recently we found out the full diagnosis. It was devastating, there is no cure and we can treat the symptoms but not the con-dition.”The local fundraising team will support the only UK charity that helps families affected by the disease and conducts research into its causes – the Batten Disease Family Association. They are appealing to companies and organisations to adopt their very worthy cause in the New Year.Kyran attends Chilton Primary School and is a local drama group member. He is an avid Newcastle United fan and loves animals and dinosaurs. For more details and to offer support visit their website at www.kyranrich-mondfundraising.co.uk.

Community effort sees crime figures plummet
The Dean Bank area of Ferryhill was once blighted by crime and anti-social behaviour. Over the past five years, a concerted effort between police, residents and the local authority has seen crime figures fall by 60 per cent.In 2006 Dean Bank suffered from 333 crimes, a figure which fell to 136 for 2011. Anti-social be-haviour reports for the same period also fell sig-nificantly from 458 to 184. Police community liaison officer Neil Langthorne feels Dean Bank is now reaping the rewards of the partnership efforts. He said, “We have seen some real progress in Dean Bank, with crime and anti-social behaviour down by 60 per cent.“There has been a massive effort by everyone involved, not least the residents who have sup-ported us. As a partner-
ship we recognise there is still work to be done, but for everyone involved the improvement is evident.”The large number of vacant properties to rent in Dean Bank has his-torically been a problem, with them often succumb-ing to criminal damage, burglary and arson. In a bid to tackle these issues, a selective licensing regime was introduced by the council to require landlords to prove they are fit and proper people and manage their tenants and property to a high standard.Neighbourhood inspec-tor Graham Milne said, “Durham Constabulary fully support the landlords licensing initiative. The results are a good indica-tor that the partnership approach is working and there has been a positive feedback from residents in the area.“We are committed to
the continuation of the scheme and will strive to effectively tackle crime and anti-social behav-iour in the area.” Police have worked with the 4 Together Area Action Part-nership to bring alarms to protect vulnerable prop-erties, and plastic window shutters are being offered to landlords as an alterna-tive to unsightly metal shutters and boarding. The Dean Bank Residents Association deserves special praise, with over 150 homes signed up to their Neighbourhood Watch crime messaging system. This has enabled efficient communication to target persistent of-fenders, resulting in many arrests and drug seizures. Their close relationship with The Chapter has also helped no end in raising awareness of their con-tinued pursuit towards making our community a better place.

Sister pleads not guilty to murderLocal woman Claire Gray has pleaded not guilty to the charge of murdering her brother at Teesside Crown Court this week. Her brother Ashley Gray was rushed to Darlington Memorial Hospital with a stab wound to the chest. The 24 year-old later died in hospital from his wound,
following an incident at a house on High Street in Fer-ryhill Statio on 14th October last year. Ten other people at the house gathering were arrested in connection with the death, but were released without charge. A trial date will be set at a court hearing on 13th January.

Ferryhill Police have organised a drug aware-ness evening for the 19th January. The session will take place at St Luke’s Church at Church Lane, Ferryhill from 6pm. A spokesperson for the local police team encour-aged the attendance of
residents, saying, “This is an opportunity for you to gain knowledge of drug use, the effects of drugs and what to do should someone be under the in-fluence of drugs.“The aim of the session will be to give you a general understanding of the effects of drugs and
what you can do if you should ever find yourself in a situation where drugs are present.” Local drug and alcohol agencies have been invited to provide up-to-date in-formation and advice to enhance people’s knowl-edge in relation to drug and alcohol misuse. Ferryhill Police have
issued a littering ticket to Rosemary Pearson from West Cornforth after Police found Christmas boxes and
Christmas cards discarded at Bishop Middleham nature reserve. Mrs Pearson was issued a £50 fine for the offence.

Allen Keith Greenwood, of Valley View, Croxdale, pleaded guilty to driving whilst over the legally prescribed limit of alcohol when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court recently. At around 6.45pm on 16th December, the 64 year-old
was seen driving his Honda Jazz erratically on the A167 in Ferryhill. There were no aggravating features and Greenwood was fully compliant with officers. The District Judge imposed a fine and a driving ban of 20 months.

These Drug Awareness Evening posters have been displayed around the town.
Jason Snowdon recently pleaded guilty to posses-sion of a kitchen knife in a public house in Ferryhill on 18th December 2011 and was released on condition-al bail to return to Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on 26th January. Three witnesses had seen the 40 year-old return to the pub at around 9.30pm wearing a black hat. Snowdon then lifted up his top revealing a kitchen knife before pulling down the balaclava over his face
and leaving. Police later attended his home in Light-foot Terrace and recovered the knife.Snowdon gave no real reasons as to why he had behaved in such a manner nor could he explain his intentions. The case was described as “bizarre” by the de-fendant’s solicitor and the District Judge requested full pre-sentence reports from the Probation Service. Snowdon will return to the court on 26th January.

Help is at hand for those struggling with heating costsRecord funding of £600,000 from British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, npower, ScottishPower and Scottish and Southern Energy will help households facing increased energy costs to benefit from the free Energy Best Deal service offered by Citizens Advice in conjunction with Ofgem. The campaign, run by national charity Citizens Advice with support from energy regulator Ofgem, offers a package of energy-related advice for vulner-able consumers in the former Sedgefield Borough area who really need it. Staff from Sedgefield CAB have been trained to deliver advice that will help people make their homes energy efficient, ensure they are claiming the right benefits and are on the best energy tariff for them.In early 2011, the Energy Best Deal campaign saw some 340 energy advice sessions delivered across
England and Wales by Citizens Advice Bureaux and other agencies, such as housing associations and independent advice agencies, selected from the membership of the regional financial capabil-ity forums. To date almost 5,500 frontline advisers have been trained and it is expected that over 94,000 consumers have benefited from the Energy Best Deal training sessions since 2008. Presentations are aimed at consumers and frontline advisers who are likely to be in contact with those most at risk of falling into fuel poverty, such as pen-sioners and those on low incomes. An independent evaluation in 2011 showed that 80% of consumers said they would probably or definitely do something as a result of the session. Around 50% said they would contact their current energy supplier, 40% said they would look
at other energy suppli-ers’ prices, and 38% said they would tell friends and family what they had learnt.Gillian Guy, Chief Execu-tive of Citizens Advice said, “Citizens Advice Bureaux are seeing a huge rise in the number of clients seeking help with fuel debts expected to soar. This year alone Citizens Advice Bureaux has dealt with more than 100,000 enquiries about fuel debt.”If you would like help in checking that you are re-ceiving the best energy deal, call into a CAB session at one of the fol-lowing venues.- Ferryhill Station Sure Start Centre, Mondays 9am-12 noon.- Dean Bank Sure Start Centre, Tuesdays 1pm-4pm.- LADDER Centre, Coniston Road, Ferryhill, Fridays 10am - 1pm.Hutton House, Durham Road, Chilton, Thursdays 10am - 1pm.

The Ferryhill Christmas Lights Competition took place on the evening of Tuesday 13th December, and all properties within Ferryhill displaying Christ-mas lights were judged.Members of the 2000 Com-mittee judged the compe-tition and were once again very impressed by the displays throughout the town. The winners were: 1st: Mr G Harbottle of 28 Derwent Road 2nd: Mr R Arrand of 61 Dean Park
3rd: Mrs N Smith of 1 Cleveland View3rd: Mr B Shepherd of 44 Wood Lane. The winners of the com-petition attended a pres-entation of prizes and certificates by the Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Ken Campbell, at Ferryhill Town Council Offices on Thursday 22nd December 2011 at 3.45pm.The Mayor said, “It’s always good to see nice Christmas displays at this time, and myself and the Christmas Lights judges
were once again impressed by what we saw around Ferryhill.“The difficult task is again choosing the winners and, although this year’s winner was outstanding, there was very little dif-ference between 2nd and 3rd places. “I would like to wish a very big thank you to all the people who decorate their homes to give a great deal of pleasure to the residents of Ferryhill at this time of the year, and long may it continue.

Tributes have been paid to former Ferryhill Grammar School teacher and well-known wrestler Ian Glasper after he passed away last week aged 73.Ian, who was a PE teacher at the school in the 60s and 70s, became ill while driving his car in Weardale on 4th January. He was known throughout
the North-East for his wres-tling career, often going by his stage name of Ray Diamond and occasionally donning a white mask and calling himself The White Angel. At well over six feet tall Ian was often referred to as a ‘gentle giant’ who began wrestling while serving in the Durham Light Infantry.

Dynamos’ 2012 campaign started with a game against Washington New Tavern. Influential player manager, John Sweeny, was side-lined due to a match suspension, but Dynamos fielded a fully-fit squad. The first half was closely contested in midfield but chances were scarce. However, the Taverners went in at half time with a one goal advantage.Five minutes into the second half Dynamos

new signing, Dale Aunger, equalised with a stunning, swerving strike that Tav-erners goalkeeper pushed into his net. A revamped home side went 2-1 up with a sublime 25 yard strike on 30 minutes, and scored again from a classy free kick. Dynamos absorbed more pressure and conceded another goal from a corner kick. The game ended New Tavern 4 Legion Dynamos 1. The team has a two week
break before league action again, and still stay table-top after title contenders, Bishop Middleham, were also beaten.Legion Dynamos have arranged a charity match against West Auckland FC, currently flying high in the Northern League, in aid of Help for Heroes. The game is arranged for Saturday 5th May at 3pm. Anyone who would like to sponsor the team should contact the committee on 07717 273 854.
Ferryhill Saints are back with a bangAfter a three week layoff over Christmas, Ferryhill Saints managed to carry their scintillating form of last year straight into 2012. Playing in another cup quarter-final, this time in the Durham and District League Cup against Brancepeth FC, Saints again progressed in dramatic fashion. They took no time to get back into their attack-ing stride, creating two good chances for Pacman and Andrew Aggar who both tested the Bran-cepeth ‘keeper. It was the visitors who broke the deadlock however with a fantastic 30 yard free kick which arrowed its way into Saints’ top corner.Undeterred, Saints pressed on in their usual fashion and were quick to find an equaliser. Another
Paul Robson long throw was met by the head of Martin Reid who put the game all square. A lapse in concentration however led to a mistake at the back letting in the rapid Brancepeth forward to put the Saints behind again. Stephen Ferguson was then very unlucky not to be rewarded when a jinking run from the halfway line found a way through Bracepeth, but his shot came back off the inside of the post. After some inspirational words at the half time break, Saints came out and showed the type of spirit they are now famous for. Great work on the right from David Tait forged a great chance for Pacman, who duly converted with a superb diving header to put the game all square again.
This time it was all one-way-traffic as Saints pushed hardest for the winner. It eventually came in the last minute after Brancepeth had been peppered for the whole of the second period. Martin Reid found himself on the edge of the box with his back to goal, but managed to turn and fire home a dramatic late winner. Saints won 3-2 and progress to the semi-final. In a team full of great performances, Troy Race was singled out for the man-of-the-match award.Saints manager Lee Jewett and assistant Darren Hewitson were full of praise for their team, agreeing that it was hard work and team spirit that saw them through to their second semi-final of the season.

Celtic come back strongFerryhill Celtic were back in action last weekend after the Christmas break. A really good team perfor-mance saw them sweep aside West Auckland WMC in the league by a 4-0 score-line. Celtic were quick to shake off their New Year hangover, starting the game with a high tempo. Good work from Craig Winkworth fashioned a chance for Lukas Linhart who needed no second invitation to open the scoring. With a solid back three of Kieron Liddle, Neil Bell and Ben Clarey looking after a pacey West Auckland forward line, Celtic pushed forward at every opportu-nity through Liam Pearson and Dan Mitton who were bossing the midfield. Liam Taylor was also having an excellent game on the wing, and his crafty work created another chance for Lukas Linhart, who swiv-elled inside the six-yard box to score a very good striker’s goal. Celtic were controlling and effectively
put the game to bed on the stroke of half time with a good strike from the classy Johnny Agar, who had threatened all game.Credit must be given to the visitors however, West continued to press and forced some smart saves from Celtic ‘keeper Kris Carr. The game became stretched and Celtic were able to counter well with some flowing football. The sustained counter-attacking eventually led to an own goal, after a queue of Celtic players saw a Lukas Linhart cross turned into his own net by a West Auckland defender. The full-time scoreline read 4-0 and in what was a dif-ficult decision, Liam Taylor pipped a bunch of players to the man-of-the-match award. Celtic are looking forward to the remainder of the season, which augers well if they can continue to produce this type of perfor-mance. Celtic’s next fixture is away to Bishop Hospitals in the league.
