Ferryhill Business & Enterprise College’s Year 7 pupils went to Mainsforth Community Centre for a day of Enterprise Education on Friday 9th March. The activity, a competi- tion called “No Ordinary Lesson” was led by ELP with Enterprise, a County Durham based Community Interest Company. Pupils worked in teams to design and develop new products before ad- vertising them and giving presentations to persuade potential customers. “The standard of work was excellent,” said Lester Crawford of ELP with Enterprise. “The marks awarded by judges were exceptionally high and very well deserved.” Co-presenter, Chris Carling added, “The pupils showed lots of imagination and worked very hard. They were a credit to their school and showed lots of potential for the future.” Year 9 pupils were treated to a visit by 6 young business people on Monday, 12th March. The idea was to find out what it can be like to start your own business. The six entrepreneurs work for themselves, enjoy what they do and enjoyed passing on some of their knowledge and experience to the young people. One of the 6 entrepreneurs set the pupils a challenge to imagine a business of their own and design a website for it. Three pupils received prizes. First prize of £25 went to Reece Roberts for his “Social Sea” social network idea. Runners up were David Storey and Amy Hopper. Jailed for life Claire Gray, 22, of Coniston Road, Ferryhill, has admitted murdering her brother Ashley on October 14th last year at his house- warming party in the town. Tragically, she was handed the murder weapon by the victim, who was convinced her constant taunting of his other party guests was bluster. Instead, Gray turned the knife on her brother, 24, who was fatally injured by a single stab to the chest that severed his aorta – the major vessel to the heart. While other guests attempted to save Ashley’s life, Gray hurled abuse and screamed, “I hope he dies.” Her brother was uncon- scious and not breathing when paramedics arrived at his home and he died of massive blood loss. Earlier in the evening she had shocked one guest by saying “You’ll be going home in a body bag tonight.” In the days leading up to the murder, she had told her friend that she wanted to go back to prison, and posted a message on Facebook saying: “There is nothing out here for me.” The court heard that Gray was jailed for three years in 2009 for stabbing a man in the head, back and neck. After the attack on her brother, Gray, who had been thrown out of the house, met a man in the street who had left the party earlier after she threatened him and told him, “I’ve just stabbed Basher,” meaning her brother. She was later found by police hiding under a bed at her grand- mother’s home. When she was arrested, Gray told police: “He ****ing deserved it.” Gray was found guilty of murder and jailed for life with a minimum tariff of 12 years. Judge Peter Fox said, “I am able to take a merciful view of your intention to cause serious bodily harm rather than to kill.” The LADDER Centre will be holding a Mixed Crafts Course starting Wednesday 21st March @ 10:00am-12:00pm for 6 weeks. The eligibility criteria for this course is 19+ and the Fee Policy is as follows: · If you are in receipt of Employment Support Allowance (ESA) or Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) the course is FREE. · If you are not in receipt of either of these benefits a charge of £2.30ph would be applied. Friday 16th March 2012Ferryhill & Chilton Chapter Issue 564 Page 5

Durham County Council has been prosecuted for safety failings after a grounds-man's arm was severed in a wood chipper machine. The 25-year-old council worker from Ferryhill was cutting back bushes near Atherton Close, Spennymoor when the incident occurred on 4th August 2009.The court heard he was feeding the trimmings from the bushes into a mobile power-fed wood chipper when his glove or sleeve became caught, pulling his left arm into the machine. Colleagues were able to shut off the power but his arm had been severed at the shoulder. He was airlifted to The James Cook University Hospital but surgeons could only treat the shoulder wound and were unable to save any part of his arm. He has found life extremely difficult since the incident and continues to suffer both mentally

and physically.Victoria Wise, prosecuting on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), told Darlington Magistrates' Court that an investigation had found that either the injured worker's gloves or his high-visibility vest had become entangled in the trimmings he was feeding into the wood chipper. This was a well-document-ed hazard but the risk assessment carried out by Durham County Council had failed to take it into consideration. It also failed to follow published guidance on the control measures required when using wood chippers.Durham County Council was fined £13,000 and ordered to pay £8,212.50 in costs after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.Speaking after the case, HSE Inspector Victoria Wise, commented, “This was a tragic but avoidable incident that resulted in a

young man experiencing a traumatic loss.“Anyone who has reason to use machines like this should take note of the harm they can cause. It is essential that the machine has the appro-priate safeguards and is adequately maintained. Operators should have had the relevant training and be provided with the correct personal protective equipment."Specific health and safety guidance on the use of wood chippers was produced in April 2003 which clearly advises the use of non-snag outer clothing and gloves that are close fitting or tucked into the sleeves to stop them being caught on the material as it is fed into the chipper.“This young man was lucky not to be killed as a result of this incident, which could have easily been avoided had Durham County Council followed this guidance.”

Council fined after worker lost arm in wood chipper

Over recent weeks, the Ferryhill Neighbourhood Police Team has seen a rise in relation to under age drinking in Ferryhill, which in turn has put young people in vulnerable positions. Recently, a 15 year-old girl consumed so much alcohol on the street that she was rushed to hospital – and is lucky to be alive. Local police are therefore extremely concerned about underage drinking in the town and are urging youngsters and adults alike to think twice.A spokesperson for the police team commented, “As parents we all have responsibilities to protect our children and to know their whereabouts at all times. Are you aware of

your child’s location at all times? Are they in a safe environment? Are you able to contact them if needs be? It is not acceptable for adults to purchase alcohol for youths and anyone found committing this offence will be prosecuted.” If anyone requires any further information in relation to alcohol, the effects of alcohol or how to deal with your child and alcohol, contact 4Real.The 4Real service comprises of doctors, nurses, social workers and voluntary sector staff all working towards one goal – making the lives of young people with drug and alcohol issues better. Faces in FerryhillFrom criminal gangs to cooking chips, a member of the notorious Essex Boys firm, made famous in a Sean Bean film of the same name, has opened his latest business venture, Faces Café, in Ferryhill.Having turned his back on crime many years ago, Bernard O’Mahoney has successfully turned his hand to writing about his criminal past, authoring several books about the murky life of the nation’s underworld. For his latest literary project, Bernard was approached by Brian Anderson, a Glaswegian press photographer, who wanted to photograph the country’s most infamous faces in a softer pose than they are generally known for. Not only do the resulting photographs decorate the café walls, they have been published in a stylish book of the same name, which

includes fascinating biog-raphies of its subjects. Having been involved in the gangland-controlled nightclub business, Bernard was working at Raquel’s nightclub in 1995 when the story of teenager Leah Betts, who died after taking an ecstasy tablet supplied by an associate, hit national headlines. It was the catalyst for Bernard, who decided it was time to get away from the scene. His decision to quit, he explains in his book, ‘was met with death threats from his former friends… Two weeks later, all three were found shot dead in a Range Rover.’Catapulted to fame by the shocking events, Bernard quit crime for good and selected the pen as his favoured tool. But there was still one ambition left, besides writing, “I never thought I’d be working or owning one in a million years,’ says

Bernard, “but I’ve always fancied running a café.”Locals can expect to see film cameras in the area in early April. Since the publi-cation of the book, Bernard has been approached by a film company, who were interested in creating a documentary of the book’s characters. “Because of better policing nowadays, it’s unlikely that such a group of characters will ever exist again in this country,” said Bernard, “so it will be an opportunity to document a unique period of British crime history.” Filming has subsequently taken place in Glasgow and Manchester, with additional filming in Newcastle and in Ferryhill, at Bernard’s café and around the area. The documentary is expected to be screened in six parts on Channel Five in September and October this year.

Have you read your emails my friend asks?Once again I am being taken to task.I don’t like email, I prefer a letter,

It’s much more personal to me it’s much better. It doesn’t matter if you don’t handwrite.

I know you have a computer And I know you can type.

Think of the nice scripts you can use as a startNot forgetting borders and why not try clip art.

On holiday what did I see? While shopping in the ‘Dollar Tree’

Nothing gives me the greatest pleasureThe joy I have when receiving a letter

Ferryhill 2000 Committee, in partnership with Ferryhill Town Council, would like to invite residents of Ferryhill to join them in attending a special presentation evening to recognise the outstanding actions of some of the town’s residents. The event will take place from 7.30pm on Saturday 24th March at St Luke’s Parish Centre. Tickets cost £4 each including refresh-ments and entertainment by singer Shaun Keelan. Tickets are selling out fast so, to avoid disappoint-ment, anyone wanting to attend the event should purchase tickets from

Ferryhill Town Council as soon as possible. Any remaining tickets will be available on the door, on a first-come first-served basis. Results of the awards will be published in the Chapter and the Town News following the event.Councillor Ken Campbell, Mayor of Ferryhill said, “Once again this event is proving very popular with residents. If ticket sales are anything to go by, the

evening should prove to be a huge success. A big thank you goes to members of the Ferryhill 2000 Committee and to staff at Ferryhill Town Council for organising this event, and to St Luke’s for hiring out the Parish Centre and for providing the refreshments for the evening. “I personally am thoroughly looking forward to watching the much-deserved awards being presented and the entertainment”.

Dear Editor,

I think it's high time somebody imposed a ban on dogs in Ferryhill, and wonder if the town agrees?

It seems to me that a high proportion of morons can not take care of their animals and leave them to BARK incessantly as the day is long and foul all over the streets. This surely amounts to terrible ownership and citizenship?

I propose a leper-colony-style setup where we send all the horrific creatures and their dogs to bark and foul till they're blue in the face. Any other residents have thoughts?

Protestors meet minister with wind farm concernsEnergy and climate change minister, Charles Hendry MP’s visit to Dalkia’s biomass plant at Chilton, generated more heat than he bargained for when he was confronted by protestors fighting proposals to have England’s biggest windfarm built on their doorstep near Newton Aycliffe. Mr Hendry heard the group’s concerns that the scheme, for up to 45 turbines, was flawed. Not only is the site protected, say protestors, but E.ON, the company building the windfarm, stand to receive £260m of government subsidy – a concern the minister to some extent shared, according to the protestors. Campaigners Joe Hall and Sue Fox spoke after the meeting. Mr Hall, em-phasising the burden on the taxpayer, said, “E.ON

stands to gain £260m in subsidy, which the taxpayer has to pay.”Mrs Fox, who lives on the edge of the proposed windfarm, in Bradbury, said that as she broadly agreed with the green energy philosophy, she was initially in favour of the de-velopment. However, after studying the proposal, she felt compelled to join the protests: “This is the wrong place to build a windfarm,” she said. “County Durham is doing more than its fair share when it comes to renewable energy and the Isles [the proposed development area] is a protected site. The planners have already said there shouldn’t even be so much as a telecoms mast put up.“When I first heard of the plan,” she continued, “I thought about green energy and that perhaps

it was a good idea, but the technology is flawed. They are so inefficient.”E.ON has suggested three possible options for the site: for 29, 30 or 45 turbines, the largest project of which could generate 115 megawatts a year (enough to power roughly 25,000 homes), providing about £1m annually in business rates to the local authority and around £460,000 for a community fund. Mr Hendry said it had been useful to listen to the protestors’ concerns while pointing out the govern-ment’s energy policy: “I tried to reassure them that part of the way going forward was to have a balanced energy policy,” he said, adding that the government “are looking at how we reduce the subsidy for onshore wind, so that will mean some projects won’t be viable.”

Ferryhill Saints roundupFerryhill Saints returned to action on 4th March after weather had played havoc with their fixtures since the turn of the year. Noticeably rusty after the long layoff, the Saints were up against Darlington Rolling Mills in the Heart Foundation Cup quarter final. But despite the rustiness, it was the Saints that took the lead with a 25 yard drive from Andrew Aggar which the keeper could only parry into the net. The Saints stayed on top until the 40th minute when a scramble in the Saints box resulted in a goal for Darlington. After half time, the game ebbed and flowed, both teams going close, with Saints twice clipping the post through Kruga and Pac Man.At the other end the Saints

keeper pulled off a world class save to keep the scores at 1-1. But with 20 minutes remaining, Darlington took the lead with a great move which was converted from close range. Things got worse for the Saints when, having made all three substitutions, they went down to ten men through an injury. In the final five minutes, Darlington added two more to make it a flattering 4-1 scoreline. Man of the match was Troy Race.On 11th March, Saints got back to winning ways in their match against Ouston. From the start the Saints dominated and took the lead through Kruga after a wonderful move starting at the back: Paul Robson worked wide with Pac Man, who volleyed a first time cross for Kruga to rifle

home. Soon after it was two, when the hard-working Pac Man scored from close range. Ouston pulled one back with their first opportu-nity of the game, but just before half time, Kruga got the Saints’ third and his second after great work from Martin Reid and Andrew Aggar. After the break, the Saints got their fourth through the talented Shane Todd.On 55 minutes, Ouston were awarded a penalty to make it 4-2, but there would be no comeback. Instead, on 70 minutes, Kruga completed his hat-trick with a drive from the edge of the box. And in the dying minutes there was time for one more, when Abbsy got on the score sheet. Man of the match was a slim looking Kruga.

Celtic un-rewarded for excellent playCeltic put in a really good performance despite going down 2-1 away to a strong Coundon Foresters side. The game started with both sides battling to get control of the midfield with Liam Pearson in particular shining for Celtic. But it was Coundon who took the lead after ten minutes, when a defensive mix-up let in the speedy Danny Whales who rounded Kris Carr in the Celtic goal to finish in style. The goal seemed to galvanise Celtic, who took the game to Coundon, putting them under intense pressure: Craig Winkworth, Johnny Agar and Stephen Ward all going close to an equaliser. The second half began with Coundon getting the better of the early exchanges. Gradually, Celtic got a foothold in the game with Darren McKenna and Liam Taylor causing Coundon problems down the flanks

with some great deliveries into the box. Coundon were defending well, with Ian Lowes out-standing for the home side. In what was a really com-petitive game, the referee handed out just two yellow cards; one to Kevin Shoulder of Coundon and one to Ben Clarey of Celtic – both for late challenges. With Celtic pushing for an equaliser, Coundon caught them on the break with Danny Whales again causing the damage with a good finish. Although 2-0 down, Celtic kept going and scored the goal of the game with a great individual effort from Johnny Agar. The goal came a little too late and Celtic couldn’t find what would have been a deserved equaliser. Man of the match for Celtic was Liam Pearson, who had an outstanding match. Ian Lowes was the pick of the Coundon side.
