~ Chapter President’s Message ~ Michael P. Smith, CSI, CCCA, LEED AP, EDAC

[email protected]

"October is a fine and dangerous season in America. A wonderful time to

begin anything at all. You go to college, and every course in the catalogue

looks wonderful." -Thomas Merton

October brings us CONSTRUCT and all of the aspects of learning with it.

I hope it assists all of us in our careers, advancing our knowledge, begs

questions, and gains more leads through our networking. Our October event

for the Greater Orlando Chapter will focus on this and what we all gained by

attending CONSTRUCT this year - please put this on your calendar, especially if you can't attend

CONSTRUCT this year; I'm positive it will be a fruitful conversation. Education and its

continued relevance in our lives is what motivates us to change: ourselves, and the world in

ourselves.

"I can't change the World but I can change the world in me." -U2, "Rejoice"

"A wild world, figuring out the answers, I'll be in my own dance and iiii..., I'm questioning my

education, Rewind and what does it show?, Could be, the truth it becomes you, I'm a seed,

wondering why it grows..." - Pearl Jam, "Education"

Mike Chapter President

the SHERWIN-WILLIAMS Plant Tour recap – was held on Monday, September 10, starting

at 8 AM with a continental breakfast followed by a tour of their facilities. Tour participants

signed-in and was given a visitor badge. We received a presentation by a S-W employee which

informed us of the many paint labels for which S-W provides the product. Following the

presentation we were introduced to tour guide and given eye and ear protection. The tour was

very informative. Never realized producing paint was so complicated.

THOUGHT for the month – “Ordinary life does not interest me.

I seek only the high moments.” Anais Nin, writer

A PEACEMAKER ALWAYS FARES BETTER THAN AN AGITATOR. – In today’s “everything

is negotiable” society, we are bombarded with messages telling us that we get what we demand, not what

we deserve. You may temporarily achieve success by demanding more than your due from others, but it

will not long endure. “Squeaky wheels” may initially receive the most attention, but the wise wagon-

master eventually replaces them. It’s easy to create problems and dissension but very difficult to lead

others in a spirit of cooperation and harmony. Which type of individual do you think is most valuable to

the organization? The greatest rewards in life — both financial and personal — will always accrue to

the peacemakers of the world. NAPOLEON HILL FOUNDATION

BRAND

“If you don’t believe it yourself,

don’t ask anyone else to do so.” Napoleon Hill

HOW TO OVERCOME SPEECH APPREHENSION – Understanding your topic and being mentally

prepared for something to go off-script can make you less fearful of public speaking, writes Jim

Anderson. Speaking more often will help you get better, but don't take gigs about topics you don't know

about. The Accidental Communicator SmartBrief on Leadership

CSI CERTIFICATION: REGISTER NOW FOR THE FALL EXAM CYCLE! "Certification is the number one thing you can do to advance your career. LEADERSHIP

“If you spend too much time thinking about a think,

TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO CARE ABOUT YOUR CAUSE – Compelling stories and visuals, not

just sad tales, are best for inspiring empathy in people so that they'll join your cause, write Ann

Christiano and Annie Neimand of the University of Florida College of Journalism and

Communications. Hope is more motivating than fear, while calls to action should be specific so

people feel more connected to the results, they write. Stanford Social Innovation Review SmartBrief on Leadership

“If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course,

on where you stop your story.” Orson Wells

HOW ARBITRATION STACKS UP AGAINST LAWSUITS – Construction arbitration can be

advantageous due to the presence of an arbitrator who's knowledgeable on construction issues,

which can make the process quicker than a lawsuit, Jason Strickland writes. Arbitration also tends

to allow for flexibility in the way parties present their claims, but the process is limited by how

difficult it can be to add parties or pursue an appeal. JD Supra/Ward and Smith

MEMBER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES." At chapter meetings, please sign up to be a door greeter, photographer, or event recap article writer. More than one door greeter can be fun as you can also socialize as people come in. HOW TO TALK TO CLIENTS ABOUT MATERIALS TRANSPARENCY By Paola Capo, August 30, 2018 (Click on the title to read the entire article)

Successful interactions between clients and architects set the tone for a

partnership with desirable outcomes. Including materials health and environmental

priorities in early conversations can be a critical step to ensuring a project is not

only designed well but creates long-term benefits for occupants. Many clients don’t consider the broader

outcomes of building material selection and need more information to make materials transparency a

design priority. Here are a few tips for how to talk to clients about selecting better materials:

TECHNOLOGY

“Sometimes dreams are wiser than waking.” Black Elk, medicine man & teacher

HOW TO DIGITIZE CONSTRUCTION – By expanding their use of internet of things technology,

contractors can automate paper-based processes, improve visibility and build more efficiently, Justin

Morgenthau writes. To attain those goals, contractors should better understand customers, recognize

factors that adversely affect productivity and safety, and identify resistance to new technology.
