WELCOME!Welcome to the Blast from the Past Homecoming Weekend!

It’s such an honour to welcome you to the celebrations that mark the Perth Military Settlement’s 200th Anniversary.

When you think back to the original summer when the settlers first arrived in the Perth region, they witnessed a summer like no other – the summer with no sun. They braved through snow in June as they set forth to establish a new life for themselves in this beautiful part of Canada.

Their story is significant as we reflect on 200 years of history and even further back with our First Nations community. There are so many things that make up our entire story: the people, the community, the businesses, the buildings, the water, the land. We wanted to host a weekend that showcases all that has meaning to us: friendships, architecture, history, family, music, military, culture…and a good party, too.

These celebrations couldn’t all happen without the tremendous support of our partners, sponsors, town staff and volunteers. This weekend will be an unforgettable tribute to our region, and I welcome you to discover all the things that make Perth what it is today.

Sincerely,

John Fenik,Mayor, Town of Perth

We’ve come a long way -- from the humble beginnings of a military settlement to the beautiful, vibrant town we all call home.

In June 1816, discharged soldiers were granted land for their military service in the wars against Napoleon’s attempts to dominate Europe. The newly-arrived settlers immediately set about the difficult work of clearing the land. Soon after, they were setting up the first houses and businesses in what would become Perth.

This anniversary -- our 200th -- is a milestone. Through two centuries and many consecutive lifetimes, this piece of wilderness has been transformed into the prettiest town in Ontario, and one of the most welcoming communities anywhere.   It is typical of Perth’s strong community spirit that an army of organizers and volunteers have come together to prepare a remarkable weekend with parades, barbecues and picnics, fireworks, and live entertainment.

But most important of all, this is a chance to spend time rediscovering our hometown -- with our loved ones, our friends, and our neighbours.

I’m proud to call this wonderful town my home. Let’s celebrate!

Scott Reid,MP for Lanark, Frontenac and Kingston

Welcome to Homecoming Weekend!

Two hundred years ago, as the Napoleonic Wars in Europe came to an end, and shortly after British and Canadian soldiers pushed back a US invasion, Scottish and Irish settlers arrived to a new, military managed settlement along the Tay River.

These first settlers arrived with an eagerness and energy for the boundless opportunity that was before them. Soon, among the farms and mills, there was a regional supply depot established in Perth, and with much jubilation, a retired military veteran of the War of 1812, Captain Joshua Adams, established the area’s first tavern. The rest, they say, is history.

On behalf of the Province of Ontario, I welcome all visitors, guests and residents as we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Perth Military Settlement. As we share in the festivities of this weekend, may they serve to remind us of the challenges our forebearers faced; their perseverance, their courage, and their indomitable spirit.

Randy Hillier,MPP for Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington

HISTORYThe 200th Anniversary celebrations taking place in Drummond/North Elmsley, Beckwith, Tay Valley townships and the Town of Perth offer us an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between settlers, immigrants and First Nations people going back beyond the 200th anniversary year of 1816 to the time of first contact.

The communities that now make up Perth and District came to be as living conditions in Britain and Europe deteriorated. The British government developed an emigration policy that saw parts of what now is Lanark County settled as early as 1790. The push in Perth and District began in 1816.

The Perth Military Settlement was one of the three strategic defensive outposts created along the Rideau Corridor after the War of 1812. The goal was to establish a trained reserve force along the Tay River in case of another conflict with the United States. Settlers were enticed by land grants to officers and soldiers according to their rank.

Perth was named for a town and river in Scotland and it evolved from a frontier centre in the wilderness to become the social judicial and administrative hub for the Scottish and Irish settlers who survived the difficult journey across the Atlantic. Surrounding townships were surveyed to accommodate the new arrivals.

In 1823, Perth became the capital of the District of Bathurst, attracting a large number of moneyed and educated settlers. Between 1826 and 1832, the Rideau Canal was built as a safe inland military route from Kingston to Ottawa, which created a local economic boom. The Tay Canal from Perth to the Lower Rideau Lake was constructed first in the 1830s and then rebuilt in the 1880s as a commercial waterway. Perth became the county seat in 1850 and remains so. Its grand architecture is evidence of the industrial booms that peppered its history.

HISTORY

The dairy industry became the largest part of the local farming economy, and Balderson’s cheddar became internationally renowned. Agriculture, logging and small-scale mining were prominent industries and shoes, whiskey and soap were among the exports from the area.

Since its initial development, Perth has grown and changed over the 200 years, which is represented in the Town of Perth’s brand “Heritage Perth” and tagline “Aged to Perfection!”.
