COLLECTIONS
Second Collection This Weekend ǀ Priests and employee benefit
costs: Employers continue to experience significantly higher health
care costs, and the parish is no different. This is an area of great con-
cern because of its impact on budgets, staffing decisions and human
resource administration. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
PLEASE CONTINUE YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT ǀ Many of
you are sending payment through the US mail, to simplify the admin-
istrative work it is best to COMBINE all weekly offertory contribu-
tions to one check, one envelope; Second Collections however,
should generally remain a separate check, since Diocesan Second
Collections and USCCB National collections do not remain with the
parish. At the end of the year, there is no difference to your GIVING
RECORD. Your cooperation reduces the volume of checks and enve-
lopes to handle. THANK YOU and God bless!

Prayer for the 2020 Catholic Appeal
Loving God, You call us to a life of service, entrusting to us the mis-
sion of making your name and your love known. We strive each day
to use your generous gifts to grow ever more faithfully into a com-
munity of faith and love, attracting people to your Son, Jesus.
We are grateful for Your gifts. Help us to use them wisely in Your
service. Keep us ever mindful to the many needs of our brothers and
sisters in Christ. Help us recognize the presence of Your Son in them
and respond to the Catholic Appeal with love, compassion and gener-
osity. May our words and actions be a response to Your great love, in
the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

Fr Pino Puglisi

By Fr. Brad Morin

On May 25, 2013 a priest murdered by the Mafia in 1993 was beati-
fied as a martyr at a ceremony
in Palermo attended by 80,000
people.
Giuseppe "Pino" Puglisi was
born into a workingclass fami-
ly in the underdeveloped
Brancaccio neighborhood in
1937. His father was a shoe-
maker while his mother some-
times worked as a dressmaker.
Pino Puglisi was ordained in
1960 by Cardinal Ernesto
Ruffini, the Archbishop of Pa-
lermo who infamously declared
that the Mafia didn't exist.
Following service in a series
of parishes in the area around
Palermo, Puglisi was assigned
to St Gaetan in Brancaccio in
1990. He opened a social center
for poor children and, in the
course of his work, spoke out against the Mafia, which essentially
controlled that part of Palermo as well as other districts.
Sadly, his efforts garnered little support from the Archdiocese or
other authorities. This was the era when Giovanni Falcone and Paolo
Borsellino were beginning to expose the Mafia for the evil organiza-
tion it is. In the wake of the Maxi Trial in Palermo and the Pizza
Connection trials in New York, there were still those including the
leaders of prominent "ItalianAmerican" ethnic organizations in the
United States who took the position that the Mafia did not actually
exist or that its prevalence was exaggerated to "defame" Sicilians, or
Italians generally.
In fact, politicians at the highest levels of Italy's national govern-
ment were protecting the Mafia, which encouraged Sicilians to vote
for candidates of the Christian Democratic party, often through the
outright purchase of votes. Sicily was then one of the most highly
populated of Italy's geographic regions, then comparable to Lom-
bardy (Milan) and Lazio (Rome) in the number of votes it could pro-
vide. What happened around 1990 was that the national authorities
effectively abandoned prosecutors who had uncovered a direct con-
nection between the national political establishment and Sicilian or-
ganized crime. The Mafia managed to kill Falcone in May 1992, and
Borsellino a few months later, both with large bombs based on plas-
tic explosives.
Fr. Puglisi was killed with a bullet to the head on Sept. 15, 1993, by
a band of thugs led by Salvatore Grigoli, a hitman for the local Gra-
viano clan. In addition to Filippo and Giuseppe Graviano, several
others later received life sentences for this and numerous other mur-
ders: Gaspare Spatuzza, Nino Mangano, Cosimo Lo Nigro, Luigi
Giacalone.
During a visit to Sicily in November 1994 for a memorial service
for the fallen cleric, John Paul II became the first Pope to condemn
the Mafia openly.
Priests are honoring all Mass intentions previously scheduled. How-
ever, while the number of public Masses remains curtailed, the inten-

SHEPHERDS OF HOPE
G S P ǀ TF S O T ǀ A 23, 2020
Shepherds of Hope pledges ǀ For parishion-
ers who have not made a pledge, we need
your help. Please pray about taking that
step. There are cards at each church or the
parish office to fill out or take home for
prayerful consideration. Bring pledge to
the office or mail to: Good Shepherd Par-
ish, 271 Main St., Saco.
Note ǀ Any checks, cash can be dropped in
collection basket, inside a blank envelope
and must have a name and ID number to receive credit.
Check payments should be made out to: Good Shepherd Parish;
“Shepherds Of Hope” in memo line.

Current totals ǀ 766 household gifts ǀ $1,466,127 ǀ 73% of goal
Cash collected, available for projects as of July 28 ǀ 631,128

Shepherds of Hope Pledge Payments ǀ Please note that if you intend
to use ACH or credit card for payment and/or installments on pledge,
you must do so by signing into the parish’s online giving service,
WESHARE. Please do not include bank account information or cred-
it card number on pledge card. Go to the parish website to sign up
and make a payment or set up a recurring payment schedule. If you
decide to use WESHARE, mark that on your pledge card so we han-
dle the pledge properly.

We have created a link with the Shepherds of Hope logo at
goodshepherdparish.us/. For assistance, call Amy Loring at 2823321,
ext. 105. WESHARE charges a fee on each transaction as follows:

* ACH withdrawals from bank account: Fee is 10 cents per
transaction plus 1%, calculated as follows: For example, a $50
donation will include a 50cent charge, plus 10 cents, for a total fee
of 60 cents. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of
$49.40.
* Credit, Debit Card Transactions: Fee is 3.25%, calculated as
follows: A $50 donation will include a 3.25% transaction fee and
amount to a charge of $1.63. The $50 donation results in a net
donation to the parish of $48.37.

Since the credit/debit card fees are more than double ACH fees, we
prefer use of ACH. Please consider this when deciding your source of
payment. Thank you for your generosity.

If a man sins and denies it, saying, 'I have not sinned,' do not cor-
rect him, or you will destroy any intention he might have of
changing. If you say, 'Do not be cast down, my brother, but be
careful about that in the future,' you will move his heart to repent

NOTICES
Acknowledgement Letters ǀ IRS Rules require that Donations to
GSP of $250 or more are acknowledged by us. Failure to do so could
lead to fines and denial of the deduction to the donor. Some parish-
ioners have asked the parish to save the expense of doing so and not
send one. If you do not want to receive these letters, please include a
signed note with your donation, or you may email
[email protected] and we will do our best to accom-
modate your request. We could also email donor acknowledgements,
a much more costeffective way of satisfying the requirement, if we
have your email on file. Thank you for your generosity and support.

have been assured they would address the error with their mail
carriers. Please call the office if you experience a similar occur-
rence. Be advised that our address has not changed, and it remains

Our training and example isn’t always what
forms our children. Though there were other
contributing factors to Augustine’s life, the ex-
ample of his mother was more than adequate that
he should have avoided some of the temptations
and habits he fell into. But fall he did, deep and
hard, into a life focused only on pleasure and
power. Like any mother, St. Monica did all she
could to draw him from a life of depravity most
of which was loving and praying. This mother
and son duo is filled with good examples of truth,
beauty, and faith. What can we learn from the
journeys of these two great saints whom we cele-
brate this week?

“But who do you say that I am??” Matthew 16

This question is worth considering every day of our lives. In order
to faithfully follow Jesus, we have to have a clear understanding of
both who He is, and who He isto us!
This gospel reading also lends very nicely to a lesson on the hierar-
chy of the Church. After Peter’s proclamation, Jesus named him the
foundation and leader of His beloved Church, the Pope. From that
time forward, there is an unbroken line of Popes to lead and guide us.
Jesus did not establish a church and leave us to our own devices He
appointed a Spiritual Father to guide and guard. Not all were saints,
but the Tradition of an organized hierarchy has always remained.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
With the resumption of public Masses, it has been wonderful to have the faithful sitting in the pews of our churches throughout Maine. Standing
before assemblies, even socially distanced and limited by restrictions, is an experience that we may have taken for granted before the pandemic
but will never again. For those who have been unable to return to Masses, please know that I have you in heart and mind as I look through the
camera lens, praying that you are feeling the loving comfort of Christ as you await the day you can return to His presence in the Eucharist. I ask
those in vulnerable populations to continue to give serious consideration to whether you should be participating in public Masses at this time or,
instead, making your spiritual communion online or on television. If you do decide to attend, you might begin with daily Mass where there is
less of a crowd. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains in place.
Be assured, as well, that the diocese continues to make our collective voice heard before our elected officials as decisions are made concerning
the gradual reopening of Maine. I share in your frustration with the many protocols that are necessary at this time, particularly the limits on
large gatherings in our churches. It pains me to have to do this, but I do it voluntarily in order to work alongside our governments and health
care agencies for the common good, including the mandatory wearing of face coverings during all Masses. Please remember that we wear the
masks for the protection of those around us. One of the ways we are called to be followers of Jesus is in the love and care we show to each oth-
er. Temporarily adapting some of our celebrations and services to promote the health and safety of everyone answers that call and, as always, I
ask for your compliance and awareness that doing so protects others.
The vigilance to safety guidelines by our fellow residents has helped maintain low COVID19 numbers in Maine. That response has been inspir-
ing, as has the effort and boundless energy with which the Church in Maine has adapted to these extraordinary circumstances. The ongoing cre-
ation of online Catholic content, from the livestreamed Masses and adoration to virtual meetings and prayer groups, is overwhelming. The
large numbers of viewers and participants in these online celebrations and gatherings has shown that, despite recent obstacles, our clergy and
faithful are deeply committed to ensuring that the Gospel is always proclaimed.
God is good and his grace shines through whatever darkness we face. This, perhaps, has never been more obvious at any point in our lives than
now. I want to express my gratitude to all who have continued to help spread the Good News and kept our parishes strong and growing through
the constant sanitizing of our worship spaces and support offered to those in need. Thank you to all of the clergy who have embraced the use of
digital platforms to stay connected with our parishioners, maintaining these personal relationships even while remote. Thank you to parents who
form the “domestic churches” throughout our diocese where you cultivate the faith of your children. Thank you to all our Catholic schoolteach-
ers and staff who have worked tirelessly over the summer to ensure our schools will open in the coming weeks. Thank you to our school fami-
lies for committing to our schools, places where their children become confident contributors of knowledge and faith in our world. All of your
work and witness show the world that if we open our minds and hearts to hear and to see what the Lord wants of us, what the Spirit of God can
do through us may well be limitless.
The ministries, initiatives, and direct assistance offered by the diocese and our parishes are crucial, perhaps now more than ever. Jesus calls us
to look towards those who look to us and foster grace.I deeply appreciate the financial support you have provided to your parishes and the dio-
cese. It is that support which makes it possible for us to continue our mission to walk daily with Jesus through our care for one another.
We celebrate in these days the beautiful feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. For us, this is a sign of hope. “Where
she has gone, we hope to follow.” We ask, then, the intercession of Mary, Mother of God, and the Church, that she might ask the Lord Jesus to
guide us to know best how we can serve in these times of uncertainty. May her maternal care assure us of the loving care of Jesus, her Divine
Son.
